'Floating', I like it. Its dudes like you that made me confident that I could even show these techs. See ya soon.
Hoach!!
Thank you all so much! The 3 day death camp was surreal. Lonnie Jones is officially credited with helping fix a broken mind ,and along with Jodie, a dislocated shoulder. I was ready to work no doubt, but without Lonnie's sports psychology, I don't think I could have made it through day 3. Yeah, I had my toes hooked in the cage...but after 2 shoulder dislocations I still crucifixed a 291 lbs monster near one handed. That typically is not me! I credit that directly to Brandon, Bobby, Sean, and Lonnie.
Here’s my review:
The camp was amazing! Absolutely zero egos….a complete lack of douche-baggery, everyone was too awesome. I had previously been to two of Brandon’s seminars, but never to a training camp so I didn’t really know what to expect. As soon as we stepped on the mats there were folks introducing themselves, striking up conversations about how long everyone had been doing jj under 10P…nice and cordial. I kept hearing people talk about this Bobby Rivers guy and how awesome he is. When I asked where he was, they just said, “He’s not here yet…but you’ll know who he is when he gets here”. Ten of fifteen minutes later this tall dude come in smiling all big, randomly turning summersaults that ended up with him on someone’s back with both hooks in (reverse gangtsa hug style) followed by, “hey man, how you been?”, then back on his feet and off to greet someone else. Full of energy. I turned to my coach and asked if that was Bobby, and he replied, “I told you”. Indeed.
Training time, certainly no trouble finding a variety of partners with 40 people in the room. I think I had a different partner for each session, each day…who gets that opportunity anywhere else? Dead zone warm-ups were sick, rolling time was great…tight quarters (considering there were so many people) and people were very conscious of where other people were rolling…no smashed ankles
I don’t know about the rest of the people who took advantage of the free housing, but for the folks out of Cookeville TN, our experience was top notch. Jorge put us up in his place, his wife cooked awesome Costa Rican quinine, they hooked us up with coffee in the morning plus a generous side of great conversation. There is absolutely no way in hell that we could ever repay such a huge favor. We packed bread, peanut-butter, jelly, canned soups, etc…but we barely broke into any of it because we were treated so well (way better than we deserved). There aren’t enough words to express how great Jorge and his family are…some great souls man!
Every day was full of surprises. Every instructor had a unique style, and each style was so easily assimilated because they each had a passion to teach this information. Everything made sense! I was able to take so much from everyone, and I think this was the case for all attendees. Everything tied in together. The sports psychology session taking about immediate feedback (the ding) tied into Brandon’s pressure passing (the “urmmph” groan of a soul being sucked out through a straw). Just awesome.
In the middle of next month I will have a year of J.J. under my belt, 11 months of which has been with 10th planet. This weekend validated everything I love about the system from the fundamental ideas behind the process (system) to the people (family) who prescribe to it’s theories and methodologies. My game will be better for it, my performance in tournaments will be better for it, my performance anxiety in tournaments will be better now, and I have a ton of more resources when I have questions now. Not to mention I travel a lot with work, there’s a chance I can have some gyms to train at where I actually no some folks + be able to train 10P while on a work trip.
In short: F-ing unbelievable weekend! Thanks to all the organizers and attendees.
Get this man this^ his scepter and robe. 2013 training camp champ.
Its overwhelming to hear myself described that way man. Gonna be good to see y'all every time it happens. Very good crew there. Glad y'all had as much fun as we did.
Awesome guys, congrats to those promoted!
Honestly the best training I've ever had. Sean Applegate's sessions were incredible! Such detail on every technique, he broke everything down in a way even I could grasp. I definitely feel more comfortable finishing arm triangles and reverse arm triangles and just submissions in general! Bobby Rivers sessions were game changers too. He has completely changed my stand up game in a mere two sessions. That stance makes so much sense. Those arm drags and also that hanging triangle were both excellent techniques I can realistically see myself using. Lonnie's psychology sessions were highly entertaining, not to mention I took like 4 pages of notes every time he spoke haha, could listen to the guy for hours. I would love to get him to come to Georgia and do something similar for the gym I train at and the wrestling team I help out with. And of course Brandon's lessons were everything I have come to expect from such a talented teacher, that pressure from half and side mount and the passing concepts were genius. I love how open to questions everyone was, not only that but how Brandon would allow a monster like Bobby to try and escape to demonstrate how technique's aren't always perfect but they definitely allow you to control a stronger opponent. There is no wrong way in jiujitsu just easy or hard! My game has really progressed this weekend. I've added new techniques and updated old ones to incorporate what I've learned. The overtime tournament and absolute tournament were also so professional, and those mixed with Lonnie's talks has really helped with my own competition anxiety. The free housing was fantastic. Beowulf was an excellent host even cooking us breakfast and he gave me a bar of soap! My other roommates were awesome too Lee and Sid are both super nice guys and I plan on keeping contact with all three of them.
I could really keep going but the Tl;Dr is this: The head follows the body. 10th Planet is the nicest group of individuals ever. And my game has been changed in very big ways. Everyone needs to keep an eye on the South East because big things are going to keep happening. If anyone comes to Georgia let me know, all of you are more than welcome to stay with me.
It's so encouraging to me to read all these reviews!
We put in a lot of work to make the weekend happen. Lots of organizing and lots of preparation went into making it happen, and it was certainly a team effort. Thanks to everybody that hosted our guests: Jorge Solorzano, Tim Garland, Beowulf. You guys made this weekend possible.
Thanks to Tammy Spake for coming and sharing her products with us and for saving Bobby from certain death via dehydration!
Thank you to our teachers Sean Applegate, Bobby Rivers and Lonnie Jones for giving us well thought out, informative and practical content.
Thank you to the leaders of our organization for paving a pathway of positivity and openness for the rest of us to travel. Without your vision and leadership we would all be grasping somewhere else.
And most importantly, I want to thank the team at 10th Planet Decatur. You guys motivate me every day. You create an atmosphere that makes other teams and players want to be around us and be a part of what we are doing. Jiu Jitsu changes people for the better, and you guys make people want to be there to train Jiu Jitsu. You're making a difference in your little corner of the world, and that means everything to me in my little corner of the world :)
I love you guys :)
