Oooooor, we both just became black belts!!!! Congrats homie Its been a long and beautiful journey. I knew we'd make it. So many people I gotta thank. Ooh, let's go see Mickey!
Disney is always fun! aND HEY, black beltch is the start of the journey right?
Its an interesting thought but theres much more to the Jiu Jitsu journey than tapping each other out. Yes a brown bet should be able to tap a purple belt but theres also a chance that purple belt could tap the brown belt. A brown belt is further along in the journey and is probably more well rounded in their Jiu Jitsu game. The brown belt should also have a better understanding of the concepts of Jiu Jitsu and should be able to teach those concepts to everyone below him.
I heart Jake LaBarge.
I never implied every time you roll that you have to put your belt on the line. Maybe its something thats only done at certain competitions, or maybe you have to tap the other person 10x and maybe black belts dont apply. I'm not trying to write any laws. Just talking some shit and maybe coming up with something new and fun. When people do well at competitions or just roll well in class they get rewarded with stripes. So their rank is based off of someones opinion. Thats creating issues. As Herzog so helpfully pointed out I'm only white belt, and even I recognize the major inconsistencies in skill levels. So I'm looking for solutions. If nothing else I think it would be fun to roll for belts, kinda like racing for titles. Closed minded please start your own thread telling us what you think we should do to significantly equalize things.
Solutions to what? I don't see a problem. Belts are subjective, based on the instructor for a variety of reasons. Generally the only people that have issues are those that don't have them.
I've seen guys that were blue belts rank to black belt in the time I've been a brown, who cares? If you are concerned about other people you aren't focusing on getting better yourself, you are focusing on shit you have no control over.
Homie I know where you're comin from. Honestly the man(who I taught) who has tapped and demolished me more than all training partners combined, is a white belt. If I could rank him it would be on the verge of brown. I honestly believe nobody would dispute this. Got another white belt that's a sold purple. They just decided to train with me instead of going to the local gym, because they value results over belts. Its because I do what Eddie recommends. Regardless, until you are legitimately recognized, just be comfortable with being a badass unranked grappler. I got promoted primarily so I could compete at more advanced divisions in comp. So there are avenues if you work and are humble.
