I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle, I like to have some tricks up my sleeve (truck, lockdown sweeps) and work on basics and traditional moves in parallel (hip bump sweep, leg triangles, etc).

But mad props to both, and win or lose I think everyone wins...

what makes a particular move a parlor trick? is a gogo a parlor trick? what if i said an arm bar is a parlor trick?
