Hmmm
Hmmm
I wonder how mad Jigoro Kano would be if he knew we were parading around with our "armbars" and "rear naked chokes" and "side control."
How dare we classify and systematically organize!
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go drill my rolling double wrist lock entry.
Man, whats up with Nino? Eddie always gives credit where credit is due. Eddie names many techniques in the system we love so much after the person who he saw perform it. Eddie put a SUPER effective system together, and named each posish to help organise a mind map.
Eddie should be recognised and applauded for his contribution AND IMPROVEMENT to the art of Jiu Jitsu, by the jits community as a whole!
Eddie should change his "shitty ruber guard" move to "Nino rubber guard".. that will shut him up.
This is bullshit for a few different reasons.
For one, I guess Bjj-Eastern Europe is now in the business of headline journalism. This is the TMZ business model where you try and find some sort of beef or controversy and put it in the headline to generate web traffic.
Also, there seems to be this idea in BJJ that if a Brazilian and non-Brazilian are both doing the same/similar technique, then the Brazilian was the originator because Jiu Jitsu came from Brazil. This is a weird argument, because nobody has a problem with calling the Gracie's the godfathers of Jiu Jitsu instead of Maeda, even though the Japanese were doing Jiu Jitsu long before Maeda went to Brazil. We saw this argument when the Gracie Breakdown claimed Helio was well aware of the 1/4 guard, but it didn't make it through the "Helio filter." On Joe Rogan's fight companion podcast with Eddie/Brendan Schaub, Joe Rogan dealt with this fallacy and proved it was non-sense.
But, Nino's argument is flawed for another reason. I don't think being the originator of a technique should be the focus in BJJ. For example, I haven't heard anyone claim that Ronda Rousey created the arm bar. But, she has been the most successful at finishing fights with arm bars at the highest level. Does anybody care that she didn't invent the arm bar? I would say go on youtube, how many guys from Nino's are hitting his allegedly patented guard? How many 10th planet guys have been successful using Rubber guard in mma/competition. To me, that is the relevant inquiry.
Also, as somebody who trains under Eddie, he defers to the existing terminology used in the UFC. If Nino is claiming that Eddie stole his moves and renamed them, might I ask what the original names are? What did Nino call "double bagging." What name did Nino use for the "Hindulotine?" If Nino was ahead of the curve on all these positions, why don't we remember their old names?
Also, there is the idea that 10th Planet only stands for the Rubber guard or the Twister. This is simply ignorance. Most traditional BJJ guys don't even know about the truck, prison guard, quarter guard, dog fight, lock down, electric chair, vaporizer, double c-cup, Heisman, samurai......and on and on.
The guys I really like to talk to are the guys who say Eddie stole the rubber guard from Nino and also claim that the rubber guard is a gimmic. So wait, Nino's guard was a gimmic? Wait, no no no....palm on face.
I posted this on Facebook: I herd Eddy even say that NIno was doing rubber guard before him and he didn't even know it at the time, and the way he was doing rubber guard was different, at least that's what I remember but I could be wrong. Its just pathetic to say this now after eddy is getting some fame. Its like as if he is saying that he invented his hole rubber guard system, it comes off that way when its not at all.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
I de like c what eddy has to say about this. Is there a video of him talking about it? I thought I saw him say something about it in a podcast.
