Vale Tudo's or nothin
After the fact since you already competed but I would only compete in what I'm used to rolling in. For me it's spats. Yes they're a little slicker but my squeeze had to get better to lock anything on. I can also slip out of leg locks easier. Anyways that's my advice. Roll in what you're used to rolling in.
Ross, you probably just need a little more time in the gym with the spats. I really had mixed feelings when we got our GS ones bc they were so slick at first and I felt like people were slipping out of my guard..but the uniform looked so BA that I really wanted to wear the matching set to compete(rash guard and spats). I wore them two or three times a week, even stole Sean's pair to wear some nights so I could really get used to them. Also, the ankle guards helped solve the issue I seemed to have to hold people in my guard better. I had just gotten out of the habit of wearing them. Also, yes..Eddie's are awesome. Mine have a huge hole in the knee and I still wear them every week bc I love them so much. I've done almost every tournament in those tights since Sean brought them back from L.A. last July. And they're only $25. I need to get a new pair myself. But best to go in what you are really used to. I hate competing uncomfortable. I'm all about tights and rolled up sleeves. And ankles guards of course!
Tori, the gulf shores spats were great to compete in. Every single loss of mine had nothing to do with my slipperiness. Every single loss came from my inability to adequately protect my left arm lol. Although I did get passed super easy by this super lanky dude. He was so thin and quick I couldn't squeeze him in time before he passed and mounted. I recovered half guard and attempted an electric chair though, so it didn't truly make me lose the match.
spats all day. everyday.
Me, Mike, and Brent just had this exact discussion on Friday night. I dig the tights because they're so comfy, but they are crazy slippery and they make the game extra fast, which completely flies in the face of almost everything I do. I'm a grinder, slow and steady. So the cotton tights work well for that. Gi pants work best for that. In fact, I've been slowly trending back towards gi pants lately.
Mike, a spats aficionado, was saying that you absolutely must have ankle sleeves if you're gonna wear spats. Makes sense.
Great point about the ankle sleeves!
I won bronze last weekend because of last minute desition to change slippery spats to cotton long johns. Still little slippery when opponent had slippery spats. Next time going with the gi pants for sure. But electric chairs worked beautifully because of that tiny change.
