I do get the feeling that maybe i could have done the class a bit better, whether it be me having the wrong grip that caused me to get tapped, or like not putting enough effort into class, or w.e. i definetely get frustrated at times. but one thing i always tell myself is that i am there to learn. whether i get tapped out a million times or i feel i cant keep up with the rest, i know i am learning while im there, even when it doesnt seem that way i know i am. one suggestion is to keep a journal on class. i do. i pretty much just record how the class went, who tapped me with what and how ( and of course taking the partners strengths+weaknesses into account). what i felt i did great in, what i felt i need more work on, where i struggled, and where i notice progression. all these things i now keep on record, and review it everyday. some may say thats overkill lol but i want the most out of class. try taping urself during sparring, thats always a good feeling when u watch urself get a sub or a sweep, or even just defending something ur partner tried on u. and remember not to overlook even the smallest progressions. like say joe smith tapped you out in like 30 sec last practice, and it took him a whole minute this practice, thats a sign u may be getting better. but yeah like everyone else said... HAVE FUN. dont worry too much on getting the sub or w.e, worry about what ur taking in from all that. a good quote i heard is in order to advance to blackbelt u need to tap 10,000 times first. made sense to me anyway
My whole objective in class is to get a little better everytime I roll. I really could care less about winning and losing its not why Im rolling thats what they got tournaments for. Im really trying to learn what I can and cant do, what works and what doesnt work. I guess im lucky that at my gym everyone has that same mentality. Were all here to get better and when we roll its a chance to practice what were learning.
To add onto my original statement. Some days the feeling I get resembles what I would compare to being hit by a truck
That's one thing here is the different mentality. I was training with some brown belt judo guys that kind of crossed over and became really good over-all grapplers. And rolling was how you described. Now that i'm back at the mma gym dudes go super hard, when i'm under the impression we are not supposed to. It's fine i'll roll against whomever, however they roll...but i'm still hesistant to get aggressive back because i don't want to seem like the dick. The one time i tried to match aggression i got called on it, and it was kinda awkward. that guy is just the worst to train with for me though. It's just some getting used to and getting my mindset switched up a bit. still like hearing what you guys take away from class.
sometimes i gott drag myself to class but once i get into the gym im pumped and when i leave idk what it is but i have more energy then when i went in (until i get home and crash) :P
I have been to every gym in my area ( i live in southern Ca so that A LOT! ) and had a hard time finding one that when you walk in you don't get stared down like fresh meat in a loins, you can smell the testosterone we are gonna kill you to prove how bad you suck and you need to train here so you wont suck, or you roll with the instructor and tap him 9 out of ten time and tell you hes going light cus hes injured. and both of those make you feel crappy. i go to 10pjj Riverside and every time i roll win or lose i feel like i learned something so i feel great.
Long story short if you feel crappy after training go somewhere else ;)
Even on my worst days I usually leave the gym feeling 1000% better. It's come to where I NEED to gym or I'm just completely out of sorts. I've been off for a while now with a respiratory infection that's been going around and I've been going bonkers not being in the gym.
just got home from 10th planet phoenix with john and the team and i felt super energized on the car ride home but i just sat down and im ready for bed lol
I think everyone has those days when stuff just doesn't go right. Granted I have only been training 10P for about a month now, so it happends a lot. Remember what you were attempting that didn't work and next time you hit the gym and ask what your doing wrong, for me it is always something little, that is important, that I missed. The hardest are when things are just going over your head. Was a Eddie's seminar this weekend and I hadn't even pulled rubber guard much less the crazy stuff a lot of people could do. But manged to pull rubber guard (kung fu correctly was a different matter) and learn some cool stuff. Keep your head up and keep rolling along.
