Joey, my opinion is: Unless you are on the Gracie schools comp team and getting free classes or discounted classes, the way I see it is you are a paying customer. You also, assumingly, pay your own way to enter comps. There is no rule or law saying that just because you learn from them you are obligated to rep them. You are completely within your rights not to unless permitted by the tournament. I know with some smaller no gi comps you don't necessarily have to rep a school. You can enter as an independent. I mean if you're competing gi, then yeah of chose rep Gracie. But if you're competing no gi and don't need a school backing you to enter, then rep 10. Rep both even. Do what you want to do. What are they going to do? Kick you out of their school? Of course not, they're not going to want to lose students. Just my $0.02.
Maybe you could respect both by competing in no-gi with us under 10th Planet Miami Hotbox and in gi under C. Gracie. That is only if you are doing gi and nogi comp?
Guy's. Loyalty is super important to me and I know its important to Eddie. (not trying to speak for him at all here but I am just saying). Either way someone's feelings are going to be hurt. If you rep 10th Planet jj then your Gracie family will not like it at all and I don't care how much they say it doesn't mean anything because it does. If you rep them, then your feelings are going to be hurt as you want nothing more than to rep the 10th Planet family. I get that totally.
This is, unfortunately never easy and let me tell you, it will not go down easy with them if your loyalty goes with 10th Planet believe me.
If you are prepared to lose training there then go ahead and rep us, as you always have to imagine the worst case scenario. Most of the time, if you are a beginner or novice, no one will really give a shit. BUT, if you are a potential player, then they will act differently. Trust me, if you were a blue/Purple they would care much more.
If losing them entirely is not in your plan, then just rep them and ( keep your Gracie loyalty) and still smash fools with our 10 tech madness! Maybe with your success they might come around quicker, and soften the blow as you gently steer them into your grand design ( hot box etc for no gi)
Or maybe Roach clip has a point about gi = Gracie and No gi = 10th planetjj, but for me, in my honest opinion, you will burn your mates at the Gracie school you belong to. I just cant see them liking it at all. Call me a pessimist, but that is my honest opinion.
Time will tell.......believe me!
Just my take on things.
Can u see about putting on both their patch and a 10th planet patch? At least this way if u enter no-gi as 10th then least their school is still shown. As a paying client I agree at the end of the day it's a business too so if u pay ur fees, are respectful and whatnot I feel like that should be fair enough for everyone.Quote:
Rep both even.
Couple things to think about:
1.) If you roll under 10th planet at the tourney, it may stop you from getting promoted in the Gracie place. Just telling you, maybe you don't care.
Imagine you were a black belt and you had a student under you that was a white belt and then one day the student shows up with a blue belt and tells you that some other black belt promoted him, so now he's blue. You'd probably be pissed because you are the only one that should promote your student.
If you roll under 10th planet, then you are claiming 10th planet as your school and therefore a Gracie guy shouldn't promote you out of respect for 10th planet.
2.) If you did get promoted by a school and you still attend that school, you should represent the school that promoted you. If say, 10th planet gave you a blue belt and then you show up at a tournament and roll as a blue belt under Gracie, that would be very strange.
This is a bit of a tough one for a couple reasons.
1. I don’t know about you but I couldn’t rep a school that I didn’t go too. I get pissed when someone reps us because they came to a couple classes then gets there ass waxed at their match. Then all of a sudden your reputation as a school gets jacked.
2. Loyalty! They are putting work in you and you don’t give them credit…… Some may be cool with it but that is a smack in the face to me.
Maybe you are new and don’t care because you don’t have a bond with any school yet work on what is going to work for you. Till then work on your sh!t and win worry about repping when you got some wins under your belt. Good luck!
