That could be an injury to the connective tissue that connects the muscle that sits right on top of your shin, to your knee. To test it, sit on a chair with your feet on the floor, then lift your leg and put the outside of your ankle on top of your opposite knee. This is a common sitting position for many people anyways. Now if it hurts during that or if you apply a bit pressure on the knee to stretch that tissue than thats probably the reason. If thats the case it is no big deal, ice rest a bit couple months it will heal by it self. I hurt mine during rolling 3 months ago and just about now pain is lowered down to 1-2 scale while i am stretching that muscle.
