Thanks ! I used photobucket to give it the E.T. heartlight /neon look .
I was wondering the same thing. EGO is here in Louisville in September. And I officially started in a proper gym yesterday. so that will be about three months. I think Im gonna do it, just to see. maybe gi and no gi. depends on how my cardio is by then.
I competed in my first tourny after roughly 3 months. It was an awesome experience and made me that much more ready to win my 2nd tournament. I'd say do it, you can never have enough experience. Don't be nervous, just try and have an option for every position.
do it man...you have nothing to lose...its all just for fun anyway right?? If you like to compete give it a shot and if you in awesome and if you lose study the tape and see here you can improve your game :)
Damn Eric, I kind of feel bad about your classes. I always preach to my guys about how you won't truly understand how far you've come until a new guy comes in. I don't mean we punish the noobs, but it's just different. We have rolled for a looong time with only our class of about 14 adults. Everyone had learned each others fav sweeps, bad side, limitations, etc. It was hard to progress like this. The white belts were getting discouraged. Hell, so was I lol. Then when new blood came in, it was like someone flipped the excitement switch. The white belts started progressing again and were amazed at how much they already had learned. I think the tourney is a great idea! Good luck bro. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!
Do it.... And like VJ said, tape it!!!
If you win, great...
If you lose, and you watch yourself loosing, it might motivate you to try harder next time.
That's what it did for me anyway.
*losing
Next time we train hopefully I can get my friend Caleb to come. He's a little bigger than me but a white belt for sure. It would help him to roll with since everyone he's trains with is a blue too.
Do it man! I've got to say I'm really in the same boat, debating if I'm going to compete that is. There's a tournament out here in July I want to compete in, but I'll only be training for about 3 months when it comes around. At first I thought I would just skip it, but I'm starting to see improvement in my game and the guys at the gym (Dave that's you especially) have really been going out of their way to help me grow.
Here's what it came down to though... I love jiu-jitsu and eventually want to be a tough competitor and the only way to eventually become that is compete. The way I am looking at this first tournament experience is just that, an experience. I'm a white belt going into a beginner's division with nothing to lose. If I go in and lose my first match, well that's just life. I'm using this to see what games people play in the beginner division, how tournaments go, to see my friends/coaches compete and just to have fun. Don't get me wrong though, I'm working my ass off so hopefully it doesn't get handed to me in the tournament ;)
I'm not sure if this applies to you or not, but for me getting to compete in my own weight class is going to be a HUGE difference. I'll be competing in men's beginner roosterweight (122lbs and under). I'm around 115lbs right now for me I almost always give up AT LEAST 30-40lbs when rolling in the gym so I'm really excited to see where I stand with guys my own size.
