U know whats funny are there are some bendable rules in mma. I honestly think the less rules the better. I mean knowing you can get a good ball shot, back of the head hitting (with the exception of the other night), and fence grabbing in with only a warning, I'm not surprised fighters do it in a time of need all the time. I forget who was fighting (it might have been Urijah Faber) but they were up against the fence about to get choked out and did a quick double grab to get leverage and get out of the situation. Herb Dean didn't say shit. It's almost like a use in case of emergency.
Yeah, there doesn't seem to be a good way around it. The best we can hope for is that they only get away with one.
He would have had A...A...ONE takedown, if he had not grabbed the fence. Aldo being Aldo, I doubt he would have been finished even IF Chad would have gotten the takedown. Also, who's to say that Aldo wouldn't have pulled a "Cain Velasquez" and immediately gotten back to his feet? If they would have made it out of the first round, guess where the fight starts in round 2? On the feet! I'm not a huge fan of either, but a fan nonetheless. I think eventually somehow, Aldo would have beaten him. If he grabbed the fence many times throughout the fight, I could see how that's really fucked up. Yes, I agree it's cheating when he grabbed the fence, but he did it once, I believe, and I don't think Mendes would have finished him from THAT takedown. Just my opinion, not talking shit or arguing.
I am totally against grabbing the fence and it pisses me off. The argument ( although true) that it would have not matter is also not a good excuse. Aldo was head and shoulders above Mendes. I wish referee stopped the fight, took a point from Aldo, maybe put him on his back with Mendes mounted, so Aldo could get back up and KTFO Mendes anyway. All this Mendes and his exceptional wrestling ability was a publicity stunt to sell the fight and show him as a worthy opponent. Yeah he is a good decorated wrestler but I did not see Mendes doing anything remotely near to what Fitch, Kosh and StPierre do to their opponents with their wrestling. Mendes shot low singles Aldo jumped out of the way. Josh Koschek or Matt Hughes ( even today) shoots on someone within their weight class and that person is flying thru the cage with their legs above their head, heading towards the fence/mat.
