Yes, they are correct this is reaping. Yes, this doesn’t bother me as this is legal in pretty much everything I want to enter (Naga, Grapplers Quest and most no-gi competitions in my area at advanced). “Reaping” is the best control so I like it. It’s actually LESS dangerous because you have more control and don’t have to “rip it” as was stated earlier in this thread.

His videos he makes a living off of are (with the exception of Dynamic entry) videos of his seminars, so I believe that would be a no on video tapping them, but I’ve never asked him, I just write everything down.

Yes, I saw that vid of the Imanari roll. I like that move, to bad I’m no good at it. I’ll keep practicing :)

Most staight Sambo guys still wrap the ankle for control out of habit. Igor Yakimov my Sambo instructor still teaches it this way. It was the way I was taught, and used the same way for years. The main reason for the switch is shoes. Wrapping the ankle vs. hugging the knee, makes complete since when your opponent is wearing Sambofki(Sambo shoes), as the shoe acts as a handle and makes it very difficult to corkscrew and slip out. However in Jiu Jitsu, Submission Grappling and MMA shoes are either illegal or rarely used. My leg lock game is nt longer predicated in how it would be used in Sambo competitions. Its designed for the above, Sambo guys react diffrently than Jiu Jitsu trained fighers and requires diffrent stratiges, hence the diffrences.

I understand that coach. I went to one of your seminars in Sherman and loved it. I’m not saying I know anywhere close to the amount of information about Leg locks you do.

The best thing about his whole ankle lock game, in my opinion, is the “replacement position” for the clamp (not on the internet or his DVD’s. It is like single leg x-guard, in that he butterfly’s the far leg up while controlling it with his hand. The clamp doesn’t stop big guys from standing up on me when I drop back and this does. I blame it on me being 129 pounds, but it could be I just stink at the clamp. I know your supposed to fall back to the side, but they can over-power me and get right back up. Reilly’s move doesn’t work while controlling the knee. I will sometimes go back to the knee from the reaper if I need pull them back into me.

If I don’t have that single-leg-x-guard like move(that has a built in pass too if I want it), I can’t do ankle locks (at this time). Grabbing the knee is better control and maybe one day I’ll be awesome like coach and be able to do that and the regular clamp and guys won’t stand up on me…
