LAst year, May 2013, I rolled with Denny300 at HQ, and he proceeded to play with me like a puppy. I think I actually urinated all over myself.
Libo did the same to me. He's amazingly technical and an absolute bear. Ive rolled with him 3 times and it was the same every time. One time he smashed me so hard with a uchi mata variation that it squeezed a fart out of me.. good thing it was just air, coulda been shit, or my intestines... I have to say if there's 1 thing I miss about ATT. Its Ricardo Liborio.
The kickboxing one wasn't a complete ass whooping. It was more of a humiliation. lol. So I did a muay thai seminar with Master Toddy. He keeps a few of young, attractive, small, female muay thai badasses around... well I had to work with one since I was the most experienced participant... It was just a seminar, sparring drills and whatnot.. so its not like it was in a competition. But that girl proceeded to embarrass me the entire couple hours. I tried to keep up... but I just couldnt.. her cardio, her pace, her skills and experience. she was so much better than me... sigh. I think I fell in love.
My favorite was rolling Eddie at the midwest training camp in IL. I seriously couldn't even get started. Knew the paths he was going to take and couldn't do a thing about it. Then Panda crushed me so bad that same day I almost had to go get my inhaler.
Same story with Brandon Mccaghren when I got to roll him in Indy. Tried a couple of things and just couldn't get off the starting line. I think he hit me with the same choke two or three times in a row. He offered to teach it to me but I was so star struck by his awesomeness I couldn't retain it.
In my first comp match ever I got hit with a flying triangle just a few seconds in. I got bumped up in skill bracket and ran into a destroyer right off. In my last comp I made one mistake on not getting an underhook and was done for for the rest of the match. I watch the video all the time and can't get over how I couldn't recover from it.
Eric Schuettenberg beats me so bad that Ive thought about calling the cops lol
I'll give this a Top 5:
#5- John Salami... when I was a White Belt, I drove 6 hours to take a private lesson with him... and I got destroyed.
#4- Rodrigo (my current GI Instructor)
#3- Keith Owen (a Technically sound beatdown)
#2- Professor Eddie
#1- Renato
My first comp as a blue belt. I weighed in at 202. I'm not sure of his exact size but his NFL bio said he was 6' 8" 300 lbs. ( offensive lineman for the Cardinals ). Had to fight him twice that day got dropped like a bad habit.
How many main instructors would come on a thread like this and put up there list? Eddie, always appreciate your honesty and sincere interest in making us all better.
Rolling with Vaughn Anderson in Thailand a couple years ago, he could do whatever to me. Too fast and technical for a whitey like me. And standing up I have a love-hate relationship to sparring with Rodney King. Hopefully I will be able to roll with him this year. It will probably be even worse.
John Botello, three times a week every week for the last two years.
I'm a newb, so I figure the worst beating of my life is yet to come. Thusfar, it was in the cage. I took a textbook left round right in the liver. I swear I felt my innards shift. There were 20 seconds left in the round and all I could do was put my back against the cage, cover up, and pray I could hold off puking or passing out until the bell.
As far as Jiu Jitsu goes, BMac is my coach. Where do I begin? I've lost count of the crushings.
I take regular beat downs from my teammate Tim and my instructor Stew as well as my professor, but they don't go out of their way to try and just beat me up with no purpose and so I'm really fortunate to learn whenever I roll with them, and also develop a certain level of fluidity in my game, a certain level of confidence when I roll others because no one can do anything to me better than they can, and a respect for my peers who are lower belts or not as good as me, learning to roll and always take something out of rolls instead of smashing people just because I'm better than them. Also I should note all of the black belts I have rolled with have basically obliterated me without even breaking a sweat.
Thanks Josh I look forward to creatively destroying you tomorrow night ;)
Jeremy Fields: man handles me every time, hes submitted me the fasted i have ever been just the other day with a crazy 15 sec RNC. i have 50 plus pounds on him. King Shit!
Sean Beezy: toys with me calls out the submissions before they come. He also gives pointers to other students while hes rolling with me nuts! 5+ times within an 10 min round.
Bill the Grill: He literally was just jumping for darce's and catching em, then proceed to twister me. This was before the dream tournament, so he used 10p students tears to polish his twister savage.
I've taken my lashing but i enjoy each one....but on a side note i thought is was illegal to whip black people that bad slavery is over.
Eddie Fucks me up everytime we roll. Sean Bezzy just plays with me and giggles the whole time. The worst was a dude that was 8-0 as a pro sparring after about a month of training. Beat my ass all round but head kicked me in the last thirty seconds and I ended up squatting with my back up against the cage and watched the clock count down while he tee'd off on my head. I was almost unconcious. Never went down but had vertigo for about a year after.
Samuel Braga swung through our school a couple months ago, I felt like he was just playing around and just dominated me. It was as if he wasn't even trying but he was on my back, sweeping me, submitting me.
Rafa Mendes would be #1. Gui was especially unpleasant to roll with. Just suffocating pressure and won't let you do anything. Rafa did more ninja shit and could be equally crushing, but he'd let you work stuff only to vanish right as you thought you were coming close and reappear on your back. People say it a lot in exaggeration but there were honestly a few things he did to get on my back where I didn't know what he did. I rolled nogi and gi with Rafa for about 20 minutes each time and it was the worst I've ever been beat up.
Honorable mentions go to Jeff Glover, Ryan Hall, Sean Roberts, Murilo Santana, Gui Mendes, and Dave Camarillo.
+1 haha
But you gotta love rolling with high level dudes! Best way to get better :)
Thats whats so cool ablut jiu jitsu, in my opinion. Anyone who has been training for a while got their asses absolutely smoked for the first couple months, maybe more. It takes a special type of person to keep comming back. Jiu jitsu humbles you like nothing else, and if you can take it, it shows you that you can accomplish anything if you just put in the time and enjoy the journey.
My regular instructor (Stew) destroys me on a regular basis.
One time we went to Sudbury for a seminar with Stews instructor, the Monkey (Professor Richard Nancoo), and a longtime friend and training partner of Monkeys, Professor Marco Costa. They are both blackbelts with degrees under Sylvio Behring. (Two of the original first five BJJ BB's in Canada if I am not mistaken.)
That day I was destroyed worse than I have ever been. It was very very VERY humbling, to be completely powerless. I mean yeah I'm a whitebelt and I get destroyed on a regular basis, but my survival percentages are always improving. ...not that day.
I would have to say the list is too long for me to post here. We all know that master Eddie goes without saying. His. Clinch is death and he created what I am trying to do to him. Overall just like he is in my head the whole time.
I was in sf a couple months ago, and got pretty much what I expected out of Denny. I think we went five fives in a row. Let's just say I hope the video never sees daylight. Lol. If you ever get the chance to see Denny interact with his students you should jump on it. I was forever changed as an instructor from watching him teach and handle a class. Physically got beat and mentally changed forever.
Crazy Bob Cook, everything he does hurts
Frank Shamrock will whoop your ass but laugh an joke while doing handstands and stuff, Bob would just break you from every position
Left Hook from a guy behind me who I thought was two blocks away…had to eat with a straw for two weeks…sucker punches are awesome. Also! Nathan Orchard every day…
Ive been destroyed many a time but the worst was probably rolling with Coach Herzog at the Southeast training seminar. He made me feel like it was my first day training. He annilated me and didn't even break a sweat. Probably tapped me 10 or more times in few minutes.
Anytime I've ever rolled with Tait. Talk about feeling like a defenseless toddler.
Every woman I've ever loved. Growing up to have to do something I hate to keep the cold out and my belly full was a pretty powerful kick in tha dick too. Jose, jack, and that goose will get me fetal and begging pretty sincerely. But I genuinely relish every second of getting destroyed on the mat I've ever experienced. I went all metaphorical, but compared to life, what's a good ol' fashion asswhoopin? Its fucking refreshing is what it is. And I would like to genuinely thank everyone who has done so.
But I'm with Eddie, most of the time I feel truly helpless, its a big strong guy with skill. So frustrating. Zero offense, 100% defense, straight Gracie 'I just wanna survive this mauling' mindset.
I have 3 but two of them came from Coach Herzog. The first one was when I was in TX, I had a little over a year in and thought I was decent. Then comes Johnny Ho from 10P San Fran(blue belt at the time), he toyed with me like I had never been on the mats. I wanted to quit, I was seriously pissed for a couple weeks at myself (slow learner) then it hit me ,the experience and knowledge gained from that one roll was exponential. The next two are hard to describe. Anyone that has ever rolled with Coach understands. I have never experienced such an amazing combination of strength, speed, cat like agility, technique, and holy fuck the pressure. The first time I rolled with Coach he just played with me and I couldn't even get out of his guard. The second time was after he promoted me to blue belt. He got me with a duda that I literally thought my arm was gonna break before I could tap. I swear it lasted 5 minutes but it's literally a few seconds on video. My arm hurt for more than a week. He then proceeded to split me in half with an inverted crotch ripper(joey shoulda tapped when it was done to him). Lastly oh the good shit, he slapped on a north/south choke that due to the amount of pressure made my body levitate, I'm talkin fucking exorcist shit lol. I've rolled with various ranked people up to 3rd degree black belt outside of 10thP that in my mind are not even in the same solar system as Coach:cool:
The real crazy part is when Coach rolled with a Black Belt. I wish I had video of it to show. I have never witnessed such total domination of a black belt. It's honestly hard to explain but if any of y'all have seen the vid of Andre Galvao playing with another blackbelt at a tourney it was like that but in a Coach way. I can't remember exactly but Coach tapped him 3 or 4 times in 5 minutes. Got him with a triangle in about the first 15 seconds, it was awesome! He destroyed him and broke his spirit all from his guard. Kinda like when Bane whoops batmans ass lol. Coach Herzog=Baddest Motherfucker I know! True Fuckn Story December 2011 in Tampa FL:D
Don't comment on here hardly but have mad hespect for the system! When I got my brown belt from Prof. Bitta he owened me for 5 mins like I just started! Also my instructor Bruce Weiler for the past 13 yrs as well as fellow BB and training partner Quinton (Q) Collins he's just an animal plus he's 230 and I'm 185 but its awesome to have that push everytime!
When my knees get up to par I plan to get some time in with cyborg and Popovitch to see how those ass whoopins compare to the destruction Coach put on me.
