VJ, I think the question would be if you did go back to Gi would your current instructor let you wear your purple?
Said it much better than I did Craig :) In the end it doesn't matter what belt I am. I've gotten shit from both sides... Been called a sandbagger for competing as a purple an also told I have no rank because I don't do bjj anymore. I just choose to avoid the drama and just be me with my own jitz.
In my training history, a lot of No Gi, I was awarded a blue a long time ago, Eddie promoted me to Purple in 10th planet, when I went back to Gi I wore a blue again, he would have allowed a purple but I didn't feel like my Gi game was there yet (it wasn't)
Vj, you are a purple belt to me :)
Btw, that technique looks great while in the truck, that's a knarley leg knot but like bobby said, if you lift your bottom knee off the ground you will get your truck flipped. If you can knot up his bottom leg without lifting your bottom leg off the ground then maybe the move will pan out, good luck :)
Thanks for the support Eddie. I'm not trying to make a big deal out of this nor am i worried about it. This will all work itself out one day. You guys have no idea the politics around here. This is prime Gracie country, your either a Gracie school or a Gracie affiliate, a no-gi guy ain't getting shit out here...and i did Gi only my first 6 years and the next 2 were half and half. I've only been no-gi only for the last 3 years...I just fell in love with no-gi, i was a wrestler...enjoy the faster pace, attacking legs and the freedom of movement it provides.
Considering that this is Eddies forum and he vouged for my skills in no-gi as a purple I will change my forum rank and get off this thread (i had no intentions of hijacking it..lol).
Craig...my offer still stands if you ever want to get together and spar...no ill will from me...just looking for someone to spar with while in Manchester...don't really care what you skill level is.
Yo their heads would implode!
I wasnt being deceptive at all chris, i have a brown belt in another discipline and didnt know that the ranking on the forum was only for 10th planet and bjj ranks, which is why i respectfully changed it to blue, (as i have a blue belt in the gi from a Caio Terra affiliate), when you informed me of this mistake. And calling someone names (poser) for not knowing the "rules" of the forum is pretty sad.
Thanks for the constructive criticism Eddie, really appreciate it
Vj you need to pop down to Birmingham its not far from Manchester.
You're more than welcome to come train and roll with us anytime you are in the UK
You come to a Jiu Jitsu specific forum and you input a rank of an art other than Jiu Jitsu and you have a rank in Jiu Jitsu, that just so happens to be considerably lower. That is being deceptive.
Urban Dictionary Definition: poser. 1.one who pretends to be someone whose not. 2. who tries to fit in but with exaggeration.
2 outta 2 ain't bad.
Looks like some kids having fun on the mat. Nobody means any harm by it, so I say carry on. And have a great 4/20 day. :-)
Hey Mick, how far is Birmingham from Manchester. I usually stay right outside Manchester in Prestbury. Let me know I'd love to stop by and get some rolls in. Thanks for the offer!
Its about 80 miles from prestbury, about 2 hour drive. Not something you'd probably want to do everyday, but certainly doable for the odd time
Sometimes less experienced grapplers can see things that those with experience may not.
I like the leg lace variation and would not have discovered that myself, irrespective of the loose basics. Guys we gotta remember that there are still many, many places out there that have not had the finer points of the system drilled into them yet. For instance, me and mick have been training with future 10th Planet Budapest and they are really going places despite not having the kind of support that exists in the more established 10P zones.
It reminds me of when Eddie was shown a new way of getting to double bagger on an MTS by a guy doing his first seminar. The dude looked outside the box and came up with a nice little detail. Did Eddie question his guard and all the finer points that make a world champions guard great? No. Because regardless of belt we can all learn from one another. Now we all understand the importance of what Zog is saying and there are rules to stop shitty techniques being shared but once in a while something different comes from somewhere we didn't expect.
...and most of the time an experienced grappler will see things that those with less experience do not. Saving time of those that lack the ability to see through the smokey haze. For every one passable technique that Eddie has been shown by a relative noobie there were a thousand that were a complete waste of time, hence having the vetting process for the system. There is only so much time to filter through all the garbage just to find a tiny little hint of a gem.
The point thats being missed is that no one ever said "don't show new techniques", just get out there and prove they work on the competition mat, then show us. What works in a friendly roll against those of even lesser skill without the stress and pressure of competition isn't even remotely comparable. Those that have never competed, will never understand the difference.
As a white belt I'm super happy that you guys have this system, if this guy was not called out I would have been drilling this not knowing how easy I would get flipped like Bobby said, just because it looked cool and it seemed to work. It saves me from learning bad technique when at this stage I don't know any better.
In terms of being in twister side and leg-lacing through the opposite leg as to what's usually done, I'd be weary of that given that you're basically taking a step back in the progression of things given you're going into the guys half guard. It almost seems like you're going from twister-side to capoeira pass. I've seen a berimbolo from that exact position before (when your leg is laced and you have your elbow all up in his armpit) so it's not hard to fathom that there would be a truck conversion in there somewhere. But in terms of being flipped, I mean, I'm just LATELY catching the normal truck with maybe 50% efficiency from side-control with the other 50% getting flipped. That's because there are a lot of micro details within the position that, granted, have been hammered out over the years by the higher belts, but is still taking a good while for me to internalize reflexively. Can your version work? Maybe. But like all science, today it is merely a theory, a postulate, a hypothesis. My impression from reading the posts is that competition is the 'real-world' application in this world of science, as a hospital would be the proving ground for clinical research in real science. Working things out in the lab is great, but bring it to the hospital where people are REALLy sick and have unpredictable immune systems, are on different medications, and have crazy ass genetics that throw everything off. Might be a little different than a lab mouse or a lab rat, as you might imagine. If THERE you can have a track record of success, then the FDA might get your back. Think of the Admin and moderator as the FDA. They gotta keep the checks and balances going. Interesting video tho.
For what it's worth, I appreciate where you're coming from. It's very open minded. That's a good thing. But you have to be careful with what you let in. It's not wise to dedicate any time to a move that has only been theorized and not proven. You'll have a hard time finding a BJJ org as open minded at 10th planet. But it has to be tried and tested.
Matter fact, I'll give you a good example. The Logeoplata. Eddie said, pull it off in competition. Logan didn't get upset. He went and started tapping guys in multiple competition with the Logeoplata. Then Eddie started playing with it. Now we have the Logeoplata AND gogo clinch game. All you gotta do is go out there and prove it works.
The Ronin Filter. Thank you Zog!
Exactly homies. This isn't an ego stroke. I've been there. Starving for knowledge and testing viable techs. But the truth is I wasted time because of this. Next to not starting or quitting, the most dangerous variable in jj is an inexperienced/bad instructor leading you down an ineffective or vulnerable path.
Innovate, play, experiment all you want and yes, this is good. But don't present new results as options until they are proven. Instead bring them up as just that. Options to be tested. Not as an instructor seeking praise and recognition, but as a student seeking growth.
Chris, you compete and train your ass off. I dig YOUR style.
I was watching random vids and a position similar to this came up
Around 12:40

How about these?

Brown or black to show new moves is a BS rule. How often has a blue or purple shown you a useful detail or their own variation in a spot they've mastered on their own? That's one of the best things about the sport is that you can discover new transitions, details etc. all the way along your journey.
You guys clearly have plenty of time, you're spending 7 pages explaining how you don't want your time wasted.. ..
Relax a little. Sharing is good. I don't think we should discourage sharing on the forum, especially given this is 10th planet. We literally specialize in odd new moves.
When someone shares something that obviously wasn't tested live, it will be obvious, and we can point that out and move on without being dicks about it. The 'humvee' leg tie up here looks interesting. Yes, his entry is dangerous which he might not have yet felt because of lack of live application or maybe just lack of partners awareness of the knee. But, maybe you can get to the position through other routes? How about securing it in a slow samurai roll? I don't know, I'll have to play around with it. And that will take me what? 10-15 mins during class? My pleasure. Gets my brain thinking in a different direction if nothing else.
Only blackbelts showing techniques has NEVER been a rule.As I said before the brown belt rules was ORIGINALLY the rule, that was put in place by Eddie (which he put me in charge of enforcing here as the forum moderater). All thats being asked now is that it has been tested in competition with success before being posted, why is this so hard to comprehend or get behind? You may think its obvious (supporting my point that a experienced grappler can see that), however it's clearly not obvious to newer guys what has and hasn't been tested live, which is one of the reasons for the vetting process.
There have been a number of phonies and charlatans that where exposed and booted for claiming false ranks and posting techniques over the years. We've had several fake black and brown belts that came here looking for validation or props trying to attach 10th Planet to their name, draggin us down with them. We've had that in the past and in nearly destroyed 10th Planet's credibility, likely before your time. A vetting process is a necessity.
Yup. Sharing is good. How bout lying? Did you see his other vid? In the past ol boy mighta stuck around for a couple months. You are probably around mostly genuine people, but in this internet thing that's not always the case. Pattern recognition through the years makes these guys stand out like a beacon now. They want exposure and $$ they haven't earned and I'll be damned if they're gonna extort my friends here. Telltale signs: First post was an instructional, techs were clearly never applied live, they were also clearly only applicable on his 125 lb training partner, then he said he was gonna post loads more of 'his' system. I don't have to gas up my car, drive across town, warm up myself and my partner to lay in bed and check the forum before work or on the shitter. So no, no time wasted and if he wouldn't of promised more vids or been a liar there would of been zero backlash. This is for the good of the forum and we've been doing this for a minute. Sometimes someone's gotta be the dick.
Does anyone remember the full list of frauds over the years? Quick, Coringao(Cappy), Ed Lova, Frank "the Man, Fatty Warbucks, Fight to Win guy, Caliphate, the Wolverine and I know I'm missing some. They all have many parallels to how they presented and misrepresented themselves.
I'm gonna go ahead and kick this horse a couple times since he's dead. The entry is everything. Rick Flares figure four leg lock is a pretty dominant sub, there's just no realistic way to get there. Puppet master is a dominant control position with a lot of subs, but you can only catch it on white belts or new blues. So unless you have a legit setup, the coolest knot becomes irrelevant.
I love kicking dead horses.
I pretty much only post on here while I'm at work, so I'm really not wasting anything. I also type like 80WPM so it's not hard for me to drop a wall of text. No time wasted.
Like Bobby said, nothing wrong with sharing, but there are just tons of guys who follow the same pattern. The guy says he wasn't trying to be deceptive, but posting a BJJ technique with a brown belt next to your name suggests that the guy knows what he's doing. Seeing the same video knowing that he's a blue belt puts it in context. Sharing is cool. Being shady isn't. Sharing an idea is cool. Posting it like an instructional that comes from your "system" is not cool.
I'm a youtube fan. Some of my highest percentage moves are moves that I learned through youtube. The sharing of ideas isn't the problem. The method in which you share can be a problem.
I remember my own experience with a weird "necktie" that I saw on here a few years ago before the video rules were implemented. Failed terribly. Coach Zog looks over at me and chuckles. "I know what you were trying. Not every one of those videos on the forums actually work." Imagine if I were a ronin. Imagine if I attend a school that has a blue belt instructor. I could've spent a ton of time wasting my time on a super low percentage move that only works on white belts. I'm lucky that I had a knowledgable instructor to steer me straight. Not everyone on this forum has that luxury.
The rules exist for a reason. Not to discourage people from sharing. To protect and help people. Especially if they're trying to ride the 10th planet name. Sure, the truck isn't 10th planet exclusive just like the Marcelotine isn't exclusive to MG and his affiliates. But if some guy posted in a MG forum and said, "Look at me, I"m a brown belt, and check out my variation of the high elbow guillotine that has a problematic entry," I'm sure he'd be met with the same response. Maybe worse. Can't just have videos on here getting the seal of approval before they're even tested. Technically, any non affiliate can post their videos whenever they want. They should just expect critique, not immediate applause.
Like I said, like you said, like Eddie said, the leg entanglement is dope, but the entry is problematic. Time will tell if "Wing-jitsu" tries to improve his idea and actually sticks around on the forums. If you can figure it out, more power to you. But in the meantime, it makes more sense for us to look at this video for what it is. A blue belt with an untested idea that needs improvement. As I usually tell people who post questionable techniques, I hope they figure it out and make it work because it looks like it has potential.
Ok, so the rule isn't only brown or blacks can show videos.
It's if you're brown or black, you can post videos. If you're not, you need to have hit the move in competition before posting.
That makes sense.
Good points all round I love this forum
Wow, are you all still banging on about my video, thats cool haha.
Hey Ben, thanks for the positive words my friend, if everybody in the world had your outlook, then the world would be a better place. You are correct, we dont have access to a 10th planet gym so all my 10th planet technique attempts are from what i have tried to learn from Eddies books and by watching MTS so forgive any silly mistakes and lack of knowledge of the defences that i am unaware of, thats exactly why i came on the forum. Im certain somebody who has a greater knowledge of the system can find a much better entry point and make the whole thing work against anyone.
Hey Chris, you are a true gent as always, thanks for the words, appreciate it mate.
Bobby dude......why so serious man?? Im not on here for fame or money, ive already got money and i dont need fame. I dont teach jiu jitsu for comp, i teach for self defence, were just having some fun over here, something clearly you are not a fan of. My advice, which is free btw haha, smoke a joint and spend a bit more time getting some pussy instead of being negative on here. And on a side note, my mate on the video said he is at least 135lbs haha. Keep smiling dude.
Theres too much focus put on belts people, your belt is for holding your pants up or your Gi closed, and seen as though this is 10th planet (NO GI), well the focus should be on the jiu jitsu and trying help each other to be the best we can.
Being honest is fine guys, i appreciate it, but it costs nothing to be polite, so once again, thanks to all for the positive feedback, and for all you negative people, well, i dont lower myself to be negative, i am a Martial Arts instructor, my job is to build people up and give them confidence and help them as much as i can in a positive way to help them learn, it is NEVER to put them down.
Personally I'm glad of the rule - as a keen Blue belt I would have wasted a lot of time perfecting this entry as it looks badass and it was posted by a brown belt after all, I put my trust in the senior guys on the forum and whilst I love the open mindedness of the 10th Planet system there has to be a filter to protect the tadpoles :)
That being said Craig has done a great job in teaching me a lesson in truck control even if its what not to do so its all good - we all grow together right! I wouldn't take it personally dude think how much BS Chris would have taken from posers over the years he is just doing his job.
hope to see you at 10th Planet Birmingham one day Mate
But.. I'm gay.
The last thing anybody has ever called me is serious. Or negative for that matter. You're defensive. It was only perceived to be negative on your end but was actually for the greater good. Stick around and find out. The reason why is because you lied. I refuse to believe it was an accident but also have no desire to hold a grudge. This was never really about you. It was the format in which you presented your tech. Is it too much to ask that you feel a community out before spamming it with your instructionals? I love this site and also learned primarily through the books and this site. Have been since 10thplanetwatch and the old forum. Which is why I can spot the flaws over vid and tell from the gate you weren't a brown. Was right on both counts.. Again..
I hope you stick around. I hope one of your students catches the tech in comp. So, take your own advice and smoke down then go beat down some pussy. Continue training and coaching and we'll all move forward from here.
I didnt lie dude, like i explained in a previous post, i didnt know the belt rank was only for BJJ or 10th planet, i have a brown belt in wing chun which is why i put it as that, then when chris informed me that the belt rank was only for 10th or bjj i changed it to blue as i trained in the gi for a little while and was given a blue, if i was a lier then i would have left it as brown wouldnt i pal. I have never used a forum before so didnt realise there was a protocol for things, that could have been explained in much more polite way. The only reason i put the video on here is coz i thought the end part was cool and i hadnt seen it before. I just thought the idea behind a forum was to share, (whether its good or shit), then people can help one another.
