I agree. We need to keep it real and pay our dues where it is owed.
bunch of hobos
Not sure what you mean. If you mean physically, my flexibility is fine. If you mean metaphorically, then I think you missed the point of the thread. I don't have any animosity towards another system (read: Gracie Barra). My animosity is toward those who pretend to know a system they don't and then try to teach their flawed technique as though it were the real thing.
I'm not sure professing my undying love on the internet really holds much weight, especially to some people I won't ever meet (though I hope I meet the majority of the people on here:) ) But I love this style and know first hand the effectiveness of it. I will do what I can to master the core values of what is the 10th Planet system. And I will do what I can to help the 10th Planet system evolve.
Preach. I Believe.
OP seems to want to protect the 10th planet brand, others seem to want to call anyone not going to a 10th planet school an imposter. If you are saying you can't stand guys that wear 10th planet patches and/or claim to be 10th planet when they are clearly not, then I agree with you 100%.
If you are saying that you can't stand someone that doesn't go to a 10th planet school, but still uses a 10th planet technique like pulling the rubber guard, then I think you are a little off base there. The sport is constantly evolving, whether or not someone buys a 10th planet tape, it's likely they'll see these techniques at some point in their careers and it's only natural that they would play with things they see and incorporate good things into their game.
I'll give you an example. I go to a non-10th planet school that I think is excellent and I also really like the 10th planet system. I've bought the books, the DVD, and will be a paying member once all the videos are available. While my school doesn't teach 10th planet techniques, they also have never told me that I can't use them while rolling. From the start, I had success with the lock down and going from there. It isn't tough for someone who gets neutralized in the lock down to figure out how to do it. Now, there are a few guys in my school that will use the lock down to slow the action while they rest or set something up. It would be unfair for any 10th planet people to talk shit on them for using the lock down. They are just using what works. They might not even know it's a 10th planet thing. I'm also submitting multiple guys per night with the Electric Chair, it's only a matter of time before they figure that one out.
So, I think it's cool that you want to own the name and own the system, but you probably shouldn't interrupt people at tournaments by trying to show them the 'proper' way of doing something and then handing out business cards to people if front of their instructors and other students.
Well there is also the matter of branding. Eddie owns the 10th Planet brand; it's not just a system, it's HIS system and he has a right to the control of ownership (just as he does his music. That he gives away both as freely as he does is astounding and only goes to his character as a human being). When others who aren't truly repping 10th Planet are teaching 10th Planet techniques as their own or in a seriously flawed way, we have to call them on it; and I believe that if you pay for the materials and learn on your own that is totally cool. That takes dedication and you can't teach that part. It's those who don't understand the system but will try to show the way (or worse, how to "smash" a system they don't understand) that get my ire up. This is a system that Eddie has poured a tremendous amount of time, effort, and money into and he's made it available to us. It's his life's work along with his music. We owe it to him to maintain the integrity of the system. I think that's where Neale was going with the "let's keep it honest" thing.
Jeffrey, I'm not speaking for everyone else, but I hate it when guys try to represent the system but do it poorly. I have a lot less sympathy for guys that claim to be the shit and are out there "teaching" people moves than guys that just suck. Hell, I know that I have/will suck at Jiu Jitsu for many years to come. However, I pay my dues and only try to talk about techniques that I have a high level of success with.
If a dude is claiming 10th planet that is one thing. But if somebody utilizes another form or posture control while holding his leg or ankle in guard that is something else. Perhaps BJ Penn's rubberguard was not effective, but it was indeed not 10th planet either...it was more likely a high control he has done here and there for years with no real system to it.....Either way, grabbing his foot/ankle did not make his guard a 10th planet guard obviously...
If a wrestler spots you performing a twister, should he run up to you...critique it, and hand you a card to his wrestling school? No. That is dumb, simply because no system contains 100% unique content. He would be ignorant to assume...
If the dude has a 10th planet shirt or claims it in some way sure...he deserves what he gets for messing up your system. But not every technique in 10th planet's system originated in the system, so it is silly to assume that anyone using a lockdown is ripping you off, because even it existed long ago in Judo as Ashi Kannuki (spelling?).
I mean who is going to come yelling at me in a tournament for using the shitty lockdown that I often use? 10th Planet or a Judoka? LOL.
Now if the dude is obviously intending to endanger your system's legitimacy in some other way..that is a whole other story....
:)
