Thanks, we're shooting a bunch right now for our website. We do meal delivery and nutrition workshops so we've been shooting vids for people to see what we do. That particular vid was shot in my parents kitchen while visiting them, we've converted them to vegetarian. I've also done fight camp diets that are vegetarian/vegan and NEVER seen a fighter have issues with stamina or strength, just the opposite.
Here is another video (not from me) called Vegan Black Metal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeZlih4DDNg
For me meat is not going to be as hard to give up as dairy products :(
do they sell thease meat substitutes @ wild oates, akins, or even walmart?
Trader Joes, and Whole Foods are both great sources for vegan and vegetarian friendly products.
most people don't miss meat...they miss cheese
I'm going to give a long rant on this subject now that i have watched all the videos jason posted. First it duz make me sad to see animal cruelty. Thats exactly what the slaughter houses are is slavery and cruelty and for all these years for some reason i never thought about it and never knew. Maybe its becuz technology has gave us the internet which reveals the truth in shit like this that we would have never seen back in the day. The cruelty is crazy! I mean i am against hitting a dog and for total morality and ethics and this shit is insane! I sorta felt like i did when i realized religion was a bunch of crap (sorry for you religious folks). Let me explain. For 18 years i went a long with a specific denomination of a protestant church believing everything that they told me just becuz i always have and everyone that was close to me did it. Not taking the time to open my mind or look at the whole world and religion as a whole. Thats what seems to be the case with meat eating. Like the guy said Taste, convience, tradition, and whatever the fuck the other one was i have bad memory from eating candy.
The main problem is it seems like everything has meat. i am no good at cooking so most of the shit i get is microwavable. o my fucking god lets talk about microwaved hungry man dinners, lets talk about hungry man classic bacon cheese burgers......or maybe a little bit of milk with that bacon and eggs.....but dont get me wrong i LOVE vegetables....fruit is okay too but i love vegetables i just prefer meat with them at least a little...........so rethinking my whole diet has got me wondering.......duz anyone eat canned vegetables? is that bad? i can totally get into canned spinach, carrots, green beans, beans, yams, sweet potatoes, blah blah blah etc etc? canned shit but i have to have something for calories. bread and peanut butter? potatoes? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I think if you watch these videos and are not effected at all then your morality is strange. It saddens me to see such animals tortured. I am willing to try my best to give up meat. damn that sounds crazy. its like being baptized. i just want to make sure that i dont go hungry or my pocket book go broke. plus like i said im a horrible cook and hate washing dishes. ( i also hate that gay clown that greets you at wal marts) ( gay not as homosexual just someone you would want to hang up on if they called you). Anyhow the extra cardio and energy jason talks about excites me as well.
I was a vegetarian for about 10 years, and part of that time I was vegan. I went vegetarian after I went to an Earth Crisis show and got into a bunch of activist hardcore. I still support all the sentiment and activism and positivity, but I don't have the drive and passion for it that I used to.
It took me a really long time to go back to eating meat, and it was something that I agonized over for a very long time. It wasn't really an issue of athletic prowess or strength or whatever (in fact, the majority of the time that I powerlifted, I was vegan or vegetarian), but I came to a point where I didn't see the immorality in eating meat itself, just in factory farming. I also felt like a hypocrite if I ate vegetarian, but still supported factory farming through my consumption of dairy, honey, or even driving a car. Even through consumption of grains that were farmed in an unsustainable manner. It's a hard philosophy to see through to its logical conclusion, just like any other.
But it is said you save 80 lives a year by eating vegetarian. That always made me feel good.
So do you train with William Vandry in Texas? I was taught my first 4 or 5 months by a Vandry purple belt who is to big and strong to have a sword fight with. I mean don't get me wrong i turn the air on when it's hot. im not completely stupid and i don't sleep with stuffed animals.( i have slept with my grappling dummy i created out of, blankets, pillows, duc tape, everlast head gear, swimming noodles, coloring crayons, athletic head trauma aspirin ibrofufen weed alcoholic prevention kits for idiots.) Yo. becareful out there if you think of climbing trees for a living. i hear its ruff after you get up around 200 feet. damn you know how ten do.
Hey guys! My buddy Maquina sent me Vegan Black Metal Chef and it is amazing.
I made vegan blueberry pancakes this morning for breakfast and it took a total of 15 minutes from prep to eating them. They were delicious!
Had vegan pizza from Cruzer Pizza in Los Feliz last night. Hands down one of the best pizzas I have ever had...and its vegan!
For those of you having trouble giving up dairy, check out Daiya cheese! Shit is baller!
http://www.daiyafoods.com/
i usually make a great Vegan Chili and eat it with rice i make a batch of it on a sunday and make enough to last the week to be honest it takes as long as cooking anything else the only difference is at first it seems weird because you have to think about what your making because you accustom to making certain things but once youve been a vegetarian or vegan for a while it becomes real easy cause you dont think about it you just know what to make.
If anyone needs the recipe to the chili hit me up and i send it over
today was my first vegan day. right now im cooking whole grain rice in tomato sauce with green beans and red potatoes on the side. I threw out so much food. Ham, bologna, eggs, milk, hamburgers......... ahhhh :(
o yeah i was looking at our veggie burgers and shit made by BOCA and something else in a GREEN packet......made of soy but all had egg whites in them.......wat the fuck
Daiya is awesome..had some mac n cheese today made with half cheddar half pepper jack.
Don-as you "switch" don't sweat it if you "fall off" now and again, it can be a hard switch and some specific food might take time. Good job though
Correct. Daiya isn't real cheese, nor is it soy. They have cheddar and pepperjack flavours. Sorry for the confusion
Daiya cheese is made out of rice milk. Super good. They also make cheddar and mozzarella.
BTW...Trader Joes has awesome soy meatballs dudes. I made vegan meatball parm to keep that shit real.
Give it a try! You won't even know its not meat and dairy.
At my store we have vegan hot dogs, soy rizo, cheese and chicken patties HOWEVER we have BOCA burgers and Morning Star bacon, sausage and burgers yet all that has egg whites in them. Plus we have tofu i have no idea how to fix that.
All is vegan if you leave out the Morning Star and Boca. However, one step at a time dude. I went vegetarian for a year before I went full vegan.
My guess is that Morning Star and Boca both get their eggs from no kill farms. I'll look into it though.
Step by step day by day.
Oh yeah...and obviously a huge part of any vegan diet is Asian cuisine. Chinese food has tons of vegan options and is delicious (just make sure the chef doesn't use oyster sauce) Japanese food is awesome and vegetarian sushi is baller. Thai (minus fish sauce), Indonesian, Vietnamese (Pho is incredible).
I just ate Vegan Chicken Singapore noodles from Kung Pao bistro in West Hollywood. Super good!
I gotta say... The only part of that I enjoyed is when the elephant started fucking up all those people... It was like Mel Gibson in braveheart...or Gerard butler in 300... Yeah they died in the end but they went out with a bang and a point to prove...
totally agree, it took quite a while of vegetarian before getting vegan..and during both stages there was some slips back to the one before. Damn you cheese!! Then I found daiya and booya!
Just know that you're doing something better and that you didn't get to where you are overnight, so step by step and you'll be where you want to be.
And if you're missing some burger patties, Dr. Prager's veggie burgers are delicious. You can get them at Trader Joe's and also the Vegetable Masala Burgers. Both vegan, both are hella good.
Im watching this as we speak and i feel like a kid watching murder. you may just have created a vegan here
Where do you guys get your protein? I mean specifically, not just "beans".
Have you looked into whether or not your are getting complete protein servings (as in the amino acids your body can't make)?
well as much as you said not just "beans" beans are a good source (as are lentils and some nuts). Aside from combining things my favorite is quinoa. A complete protein, super easy to cook and super versatile. Not only that, you don't need nearly as much protein as most people think.
i like many others watched this on the weekend, it shattered my world into little pieces... day 3 of a new life, and loving it... i'm sure i can keep it up, if i ever feel tempted i jsut need to push play, thanks for opening up my eyes..
For the other side of the coin...ie: the health benefits of going plant based, check out forks over knives. In theatres now but coming to dvd in a few weeks

There are other options besides going Vegan. It may be more healthy to eat meat and veggies but ditch the grains and sugars.

Alex,
There are other threads on the forum about Paleo. This thread is about being a Vegan Athlete.
Watch this video
Jason, I really feel your emotion and I sympathize with all the unfortunate treatment of animals. It sickens and saddens me as well, I cried during the 1st vid. I don't want to offend you or talk off topic per this thread, because I respect you 100% But, I feel that guns and knives are the "2011" rocks and sticks, we evolve/evolved/evolving. I 100% believe that big industry and the greed for profit has led to the unjust unbalanced way that animals are treated and to the best of my ability I do not support that way of thinking. I try to perpetuate more conscious ways to get food to our tables by dealing with local smaller farms though farmers markets and try to be rational in my decisions of what to eat. I am constantly evaluating my own diet and trying to evolve as well. I am not against Vegan diets and I believe we are not real Carnivores, But, I also believe we are not real Herbivores either, our jaws and teeth are built to handle both because we are Omnivorous. I am an open minded individual so I love hearing peoples thoughts and views. I just don't think it's an all in or out thing. If one can sustain a healthy vegan life and that works for them then that is awesome. Mostly I think that people, especially in this country, eat way too much processed junk and low quality foods as a result from mental conditioning and commercialism. I also feel that people should be made aware of the disgusting nature of big industry and thank you for posting the vids, I do incorporate a lot of vegetarian ideas into my life and eat no where near the amount of meat that I did when I was younger and uneducated. Much love Brotha.
I would like to see a thread started by someone with good food knowledge dedicated to posting good healthy foods to eat or recipes for healthy but flavorful meals, Vegan, Vegetarian or otherwise. I see a few times it was talked about in this thread but I'd like to see it all in one place sans the politics.
I am a nutritionist and do meal plans for fighters in camps (making weight, training, competition etc), as well as nutrition parties that teach people about healthy eating habits..including meal prep and recipes. We also do some meal delivery service. I'll post a few recipes and will answer questions as much as possible with the time I have. (oh and all the recipes/meals are vegetarian/vegan) Here is a recipe I have off the top of my head...it's one of my fave's.
1 cup spinach
1 cup mixed greens
1/2 cup cooked quinoa (cooks like rice, 2 cups water to boil, add 1 cup quinoa, simmer and cover approx 20 min)
1/8 cup feta cheese
1/2 chickpeas
1/2 strawberries
This is 352 calories and 19grams of protein! As well it is loaded with greens and fibre.
I started a recipe thread but wanted to post this here. It just came out http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/st...it-eaters.html
Notice it says starches, vegetables, tubers, grains, grasses etc..It's also been shown that gladiators were vegan. (predominantly barley)
Good stuff man. I appreciate your thoughts and respect you too homie. I try not to shove my politics down anyone's throat.
This thread was created with the intent of spreading knowledge. The film Earthlings had a profound effect on me.
Thanks for your thoughts.
