^ This. Also I still want to know where you were ranked at as a fighter once upon a time.
wrong markusneo, an untrained persons first impulse is to punch, but someone who has study an art that has a focus on eye attacks as does kenpo can and will generally strike at the eyes first.
bluegrass conference which is va, nc, sc under nbl and ski rules.
Wow 1000 bar fights a stat that dwarfs Ricksons If you feel so strongly about how ineffective BJJ is go to one of the Gracie academys and say that Im sure they would be happy to take on your challenge and in the process you could prove your point bring a camera also Im sure we all would love to see it

doc leamon stroud out of kinston nc. and I am not opposed to bjj as a defense, I am simply stating that it is not the king of martial arts, and for certain situations it is the most practical art to use. but anyone who has ever been in a fight for their life will tell you that if I willing take my opponant to the ground it greatly reduces my options if I find myself needing flee a deadly situation.
great video jeff of a controlled match between to sporting fellow, and as to there being a lot of one eyed guys in my dojo, no, but there are several guys in goldsboro, nc who have had me shove a finger in their eye. its not that hard and it is very effective. yes there legal ramifications, I am a two time convicted felon for habitual violent offenses.
If you watch the video closley you see the Karate dude attempting to gouge the BJJ mans eyes but hes only a Black Belt Im sure you would do much better.
as to daniel, if you doubt my fighting history, check ncdoc has to the various charges that were taken out against me as a result of people wanting to prove themselves by beating me. and all of you fail to realize that you keep talking about street fighting as hand to hand. once again, you fail to realize that there are other factors that figure the equation, whats with in my hands reach can and most likely will be a weapon, yes, I am a dirty son of a bitch. I'm not bashing jits at all, I love it and is why I am working very hard on this system, just from one old street fighter dude to you younger guys is dont get caught up in the hype. love your art and practice it passionately, for one day your life may depend on it. I am alive today for what I learned in kenpo karate. And people have tried to kill me, for I have been shot, I have been stabbed, I have been cut, and I have been beaten by a group of people on a number of occassions. Just keep your eyes open to some of the advantages of other styles as I showed neale from 10th planet lynchburg sat. we played back and forth and I showed him some of my stuff and his reply was, Quote, " I would just shoot you on that one." But I didnt go up there to prove any point, I WENT THERE TO LEARN 10TH PLANET BECAUSE I THINK IT IS THE HOTTEST THING GOING. AND NEALE WAS AWESOME IN HELPING ME TO TIGHTEN UP MY GAME. I HAD A BLAST, BLEW MY MOTOR ON THE WAY HOME HAD TO PAY A MASSIVE WRECKER BILL AND GUESS WHAT, I PLAN ON GOING BACK IN TWO WEEKS AND DO IT AGAIN. GUYS, I LOVE THIS SHIT AND ALL MARTIAL ARTS.
DANIEL, where is the life or death scenario in a gym with a guy standing there to break it up. really dude, have ever been in a fight outside a dojo or playground ever.
From the mount position you dictate how the fight plays out. If I want to take you down and then flee, well that's my option. Other than being stuck in closed guard, if you have the top and control of your own posture, escaping is as easy as standing up (against an untrained opponent).
Well Frank Ive actually been to Combat been a Marine for 10 years so I think I know something about life or death circumstances I respect your opinion but think the way your coming across is disrespectful Ill give you the benifit of the bout and say you dont realize it but honestly thats why people are coming down on you
What exactly does this mean?Quote:
bluegrass conference which is va, nc, sc under nbl and ski rules.
daniel thanks for your service to this country and I mean no disrespect to any of you guys at all. as I said I am still learning this system and believe it to be the best thing going. I'm just an old school brawler who used to fight every weekend whether it was work related as I have bounced in clubs all over eastern nc since I was 18 years old. I have done private security as well as I bounty hunted for over 10 years. In working in those jobs, you can imagine the number of dumbasses that you would come across, and sue the majority of them were tards with no training at all, but in the past few years, there has been a number of those tards with some training as the popularity of mma grows, so thefight game has def changed over the course of 25 years since I started training.
and jonathan, doc stroud is a traditional juijitsu 7th degree black belt in hakaru juijitsu located in kinston, n.c., also ryan, doc stroud stood only 5'5' and weighed 160 lbs., and he used to throw me all over the fucking place as we specialized in small joint manipulation (finger locks and wrist locks) so don't be hard on the little guys. I was simply saying that I happen to be one of those guys who with my size and training level and experience level in real street fight situations, eye gouging is one of my favorites. and to jeff vale, I competed n sport karate(see the karate kid movie) in the late eighties and early ninties. never competed in juijitsu competition because unfortunately when I got into it, shortly there after, I got sent to prison for being the first guy convicted under the habitual misdemeanor assault statue in nc for spitting on my ex-wife, and at this point all of you should take a moment and ask how do you go to prison for that. the answer is I fought every weekend 2-3 times a weekend when I was in my 20s, I have a long extensive criminal record for fighting which slowly built into felony charges (google jonathan frank james vs. state of nc if you doubt this), which goes to another point that someone made on here, fighting isnt free anymore, the legal ramifications arent worth street brawling unless your life depends on it. I mentor the kids that I teach to get involved with competitive sports and tournament fighting. sorry to have came off cocky but 25 years of street fighting has made me that way. would love to meet all of you guys and let you guys teach me something that I dont know, thats why I continue training and teaching because I'm forever seeking knowlege in all styles of fighting. hope this post clarified some of my feelings and ideas. humbly asking that if I offended anyone, forgive me. that was not my intent.
No worries man were all passionate about our training and belief in our systems so with that we do sometimes take things personal when in actuality they are not really that big of a deal lots of type A personalities around here. Anyhow its good to have you here I plan on making the drive to Lynchburg myself and checking out the new school so mabye Ill be able to train with you sometime.
aj I was referring to being in guard and your opponent pulls a knife and tries to start hacking off your body parts (which has happened to me and in eastern nc a hip knife is daily apparel) I was cut three times before I was able to get control of his knife hand and yes, I thumb gouged his eye and bit him on the knife hand to make him drop it. thus why I feel so strongly about such tactics. If it werent for some friends there to pull me off the guy, I would have probably beat the guy to death. as it was he got away with a few hours of reconstructive surgery. so I guess I was saying that sometimes being on the ground isnt where "I" at that particular moment, wanted to be. ;)
hat would be great. hope I cleared that up for you, also just replied to aj in hopes to clear up a little more on how I feel bout street fighting. btw where do youlive
I agree with this statement most of all.
frank chill... take some weed, and enjoy your life, without those negative thoughts.. :D
bjj is a sport, we are not training to kill people.. :) If you had 1000 fights, dude, you have real problem..
Peace brother ;)
Luka if you read through the thread you will see that the point of it was a debate over the selfdefense effectiveness of jiujitsu Royce Gracie was stating in the Article that BJJ isnt about points and how that mentality is killing jiujitsu the deadly art it was meant to be
"jonathan, doc stroud is a traditional juijitsu 7th degree black belt in hakaru juijitsu located in kinston, n.c."
Ok I see, well this is a BJJ website more specificly 10thp jj and a lot of the people who post here are highly ranked in other martial arts. Ari Bolden (moon instructer) is a black belt in Japanese Jujitsu Chris Herzog another moon instructer is a black belt in Judo and some form of karate I believe and also a certified Instructer in Sambo, I beleive another moon instructor Is Highly ranked in Akido. Along with many other forum members who are ranked as black belt or instructer in many other martial arts they all post on this forum under there Bjj rank. Out of respect for Eddie Bravo and everybody else who has achieved there rank in bjj and to not accidently misrepresent yourself you might consider doing the same. You could always show your other ranks in your signature under your posts. Now im nobody to be telling you what to do but I know this is the way Eddie the other moon instructers and the people who frequint this forum want it to be.
Yea Lula, two years of anger management (court ordered ) no doubt I got some demons. You any weed you send me:cool:
Gotcha Jonathan I'm on my Droid right now so fix that asap. There wasn't directions under that, and I wasn't sure so I went with my rank in the closest art form and fyi I'm also a purple under verisimo charities in Nova uniao bjj, so I'm not a beginner and I'm working very hard with Neale hoerle in lynchburg to learn 10th planet. Thanks for the heads up
That should have been. Charuto in previous post, fucking Droid
Glad to hear that you made it out of that situation. Knives are a different beast altogether and I don't claim to know anything about hand to knife self defense. Hell, some people say that when a knife is involved, you're always going to get cut and the best you can do is minimize damage or cut the other guy more.
Did you actually train to catch a guy in closed guard and to bite his hand? What aspect of what occurred was actually a component of a trained technique?
No dude, that was just instinct and love of self preservation. And that could fit this thread also as to how fights are unpredictable
If your telling me Renato "Charuto" Verrisimo gave you a purple belt than that is appropriat rank for this site. How was it training in Hawaii? Did you get to train with B.J. Penn?
Unfortunately I never trained in Hawaii. I helped open ABI's mma in goldsboro, NC, and we were an affiliate Nova uniao under rootz. He is an awesome dude and I hate that me and a long time friend moose huffman the owner, had a falling out over the direction of the school. I miss all those guys. Rootz has one of his brown belts in Wilmington and right now those guys are dominating the local mma scene. But if I had never left I would have probably never discovered 10th planet and we wouldn't be talking. If you go to abismma.com moose pretty much erased me from the site but you can see a couple of the guys I trained while I was there. Also look me on Facebook where you can see some of my guys that I've worked with. If you see my fighter Doug and check his shorts, they are rich clementes from his last fight in the ufc. You'll also see my good friend Shane hurricane helms from WWW who I have also taught bjj to. Look me up and add me if you have fb
Last post should have been Shane helms from wwe. Fuckin Droid keeps correcting my input
ir's def a balance
I think its bullshit. I mean ok, maybe what tey want to teach is for the street, but as far as me, I don't train to be a street fighter, or to protect myself on the streets. If I want street protection, Ill get myself a 9mm. To me Jiujitsu is a sport and great way of competing in combat sports while going 100% and not hurting your opponent.
Part of this is true in a sense that the art's originality and fundamentals get lost as time passes by but you also have to think about how tournament keep people interested and peaking the interest of new people for the art to grow.
MMA is not street fighting,
weight classes are not street fighting
rules are not street fighting
sports are not street fighting------>they're competition
competition is good
i just want points for spiderweb, truck, and anaconda body lock
From the artilce:
"Inside BJJ
Can you comment on the tournament your brother, Relson Gracie, is throwing in Sacramento on September 4th & 5th?
Royce Gracie
No. Don’t know about it. If I knew about it (laughs), well first I heard he was starting a tournament in Brazil.
Inside BJJ
Well, he’s starting a tournament circuit based on your father’s rules. For example, you can’t hold the sleeves more than 10 seconds, and you can’t hold a position for more than 30 seconds."
--That's interesting... Helio style competition: you can't hold the sleeve for more than 10 seconds? Sort of reminds me of the evolution of NOGI (doing away with sleeves altogether). I've always thought 10pjj and NOGI are getting BACK to the true fundamentals of the art. Maybe Helio would agree.
I 100% agree with royce with regards to the street fighting. However, some people just want to compete in tournaments. However, if the points jiu jitsu is being marketed for self defence...then yeah..there's the problem. It's interesting to hear him say this as Renzo just said something on this line fairly recently about jiu jitsu..but he was critiquing Rener about "real gracie jiu jitsu".
We really are at a point where BJJ has the potential to turn into TKD for sure. It is a concern. BJJ and MMA are being marketed as being street fighting applicable arts, however with the lack of quality control:muay thai...becomes cardio kickboxing, BJJ becomes tournament BJJ. MMA is assumed to be STREET CERTIFIED.
Who is marketing, who is hating and who is legit?
Hes saying that now adays they teach them to win tournaments not end fights
I think tournaments have helped the sport expand and have made it widely more popular. People love competition. Everybody wants to be the guy in Karate Kid. I'm sure his father didn't intend on his students learning and getting belted from virtual teachers on the internet either (aka gracie university). Royce doesnt seem to have a problem counting the money from that tho.
