why wasn't the ref stepping in when they got to the edge of the mats? what the fuck? he should have been in there so this exact situation doesn't happen.
Saturday was a lot of fun and a wonderful learning experience for me :) it was awesome to see how many of our 10th planet fam showed up to compete and show support. looking forward to becoming stronger and going back next year. but for now i am happy that i received a third place medal :)

I would add how is the ref not warning the other guy for what looks like upkicks/kicks to me (in a non-striking grappling match)? Least from what I can see here....reminds me of the Silva upkick to Okami/Filho upkick to Chael...

The only thing I don't agree on conors side was the "break it" shouting. Makes 10thpjj look bad and gives fuel to the haters.
But I understand why the guy was shouting it, since you expect to hold a submission until the opponent taps and the ref stops it so the outcome is clear. But the ref proved that he would rather stand there speaking Portuguese that jump in and SAVE the athlete from unnecessary damage. I bet just buy touching conor on the shoulder he would have stopped. His opponent was being a dick with the upkicks but I think the punching in the kitney was ok. Of course tapping would have been better.
The reason for that was that he couldn't rely on the ref. He was saying stop, conor did not hear it. That's ok, its a combat sport with adrenaline and you might not hear everything. That's why there's the ref. You must be able to trust the ref to do this job and save you once you say stop. If someone was breaking my foot while I was saying stop and the ref wouldn't to shit, I would go crazy as well.
Conor should read the rules next time (but again imo he didn't do anything wrong)
His opponent should try to tap first then punch.
The IBJJF needs to get new refs or train them better.
I understand verbally tapping when your hands are occupied but if your hands are free enough to punch a dude on the thigh, why not just tap? From my experience, most guys are less likely to stop to a verbal submission anyways since they aren't expecting it and it's also difficult to understand people with their mouth piece in.
I never really thought of this but do they only bring refs from Brazil? I would think being in southern california you would have some locals reffing? They should at least learn "stop" in English. I bet there were more Americans than Brazilians in this tourney.Quote:
