Can you get your black belt from watching YouTube jiu Jitsu ?

haha I didn't see Slick Rick post
I would say up until purple online is fine, for brown u should have to check in with one of the affililates (of whatever school) and prove in person rolling with other students of that level that u're up to par. I think going the whole way to black is too much, at some point u do need to be evaluated in person.
Well considering the question people are interested in and have opinions in is the "is it fair" one. I didn't know and have never been to a Any other jiu jitsu site and wasn't sure if they were, So I decided to do some research and found out its up to 4 stripe brown (at least for the gracie academy in Torrance). The question of whether or not you can recieve a belt online isnt the important one, as i gave one specific school... Cesar gracie could start an online school tomorrow and give out black belts through it for all we know. The question which is of interest to me (which is why I asked it) , and apparently interest to a lot people (as many of you have an opinion on the subject and are stating it). Nobody is stiring any pot, except for perhaps you. If you think people stating their opinions in a respectful manner to a jiu jitsu relevant subject on a jiu jitsu is "stiring a pot" I don't know what to tell you, other than ignore the post? It's a curious topic to me.
I was think about this all and one metaphor that came to mind is a quote: “Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you an automobile.” It seems possible to have legit technique at a blackbelt level, without training the traditional way in a school.
Ok, notice the white belt over on the left. I actually don't even have a belt as we don't used them where I train but I do pretty good against blue belts. I would agree with the overall sentiment of the above post, online testing seems like a joke to me but eddie does let people test for belts with videos. Who am I to questions Eddies opinions on jujitsu.
I apologise for possibly asking a stupid question but Im kinda new. Why do people want belts? If you go to a tournament you'd have to roll against guys with the same belt right? Seems like you'd want to stay at a certain belt until you can fairly easily take out competitors at that level before getting promoted. How many no-gi tournaments have divisions based on belt? I have a nylon belt and a leather belt.
that made me chuckle
I wear two black belts everyday at work. The first one is a velcro type belt that goes through the belt loops on my pants, the second one attaches to that one (with some belt keepers/stays) and holds all my duty gear. I bought them at a store, they don't mean very much to me.
I have met some guys at the gym who started out as new people with no live exerience. Found out firsthand how good someone can be by watching videos and training at home. Played possum with a new guy, was shocked when he transitoned between triangle and armbar attempts. All from youtube videos.
I think the furthest a YouTube jiu Jitsu guy could go without having any formal teaching would be blue belt. If they watch videos and UFC they could get a general understanding of basic submissions and sweeps. Of course none of that would be useful if they weren't athletic. Being able to understand the bodies movements isn't something you learn in a day especially when someone else is trying to do the same against you. If the guy has good general understanding of body movements maybe from other sports or martial arts its possible he could hang with blue belts but I wouldn't say everyone could do it.
As someone who learned first from videos, I agree. I think you could get to the blue belt level as far as knowledge of techniques but unless you've trained in some other grappling I don't see how you could get beyond that and really I think you'd be a weak blue belt. I do really well against blue belts but at first I just couldn't seem to apply most chokes and makes them actually work and there are a ton of other nuances that you just could not learn with out rolling.
I don't plan on pursuing a belt unless I one day have to get one to compete on a higher level, otherwise I just don't see the point. Now when I was a kid and in other martial arts I was defiantly a belt chaser.
