I just went to Vegas this week and trained at Cobra Kai. The instruction was good and a cool group of guys. I would recommend it.
So my coach says don't go to drysdale and vinny's school because they're assholes/cocky. He recommended penha's school and another dude. .. calvacante I think?
I still think I'll be going to cobra kai regardless. I didn't want to press the issue, but what's my instructor talking about?
Calvacanti is a Carlson guy down by the airport, his son Romulo is a beast grappler.
I honestly have ever no idea what your instructor is talking about, Vegas definitely has its gym drama but that stuff is usually petty and better off being disregarded
Wherever there are more than 2 schools there will be some kind of drama haha. A lot of it is from people that could find drama in any situation.
Romulo isn't Ricardo's son. I'm not exactly sure why he took Ricardo's last name but there are a few reasons I've been told. I trained with Ricardo for a few years before leaving for Sergio's. When I moved to Vegas I trained with Cavalcanti because I came from a Carlson school in NY. Looking back I'm happy how my journey has rolled out. That said, if I had taken the time to train at each school before deciding I probably would have been much happier and never trained at CGT Vegas.
What are your goals with jiu jitsu? Really the only way you'll know what school is best is by checking out each school for yourself. When you get into town take a week at each school. You'll never know what's best for you going off of other people's opinions or forum posts. I think Cobra Kai is a great option, I just think Sergio's school is best for me. Sim is very much like Sergio in the regard of, "come check out our product, if you like it sign up. If another school is better for you, go there!"
I can promise you that if you take the time to go to each school you'll feel way more resolute in your decision. It's a crappy feeling wondering "what if" after you sign a contract wherever you decide. (for the record I don't think Sim does contracts)
Man, Vegas really doesn't have any true open mats. Everything is almost exclusively members only, with a drop in fee. Since you're new in town, you should be able to do trial classes basically everywhere. What area of the city did you end up in?
I'm living in Henderson at the end of 215, on East Lake Meade.
I just saw your PM now. I messgaed you back. I think the only true "open mat" is at Sonny's. Not sure of days and times though. Let me know when you're coming through and I'll get you set up at Sergio's. I'm teaching tonight and Thursday night from 7-8. Just a drills/fundamentals class. Sergio is teaching nogi at 5.
I just want to add a vote for Cobra Kai. I dropped in there a few years ago and thought it was amazing. Sim is an EXCELLENT instructor and a true assassin on the mats. If I ever move to Vegas, that is where I will train.
