I am a wet paper bag.
Jiu Jitsu is soft and hard like water is, it is sometimes smooth and flowing, but when it comes crashing down (submission) it is like falling off a cliff into water, hard like concrete. Strikeing is soft and hard like bamboo, it bends in its relaxation and snaps to a hard strength.
Both are soft sometimes and hard sometimes, both are different in how they are soft and hard. Neither is better, they approach softness and hardness differently because they are different.
The conditioning and relaxation/tenseness of muscles is different. Both reqiure relaxation, in both relaxation can only be developed thru sparring and drilling. In this way they are the same.
One guy loses a loved one and his heart becomes hard and he distant. Another guy loses a loved one and starts a support group and tries to help others who have suffered loss. It is the mindset going into the fight that decides if a person comes out the other side hard or soft. Ones ability to deal with the emotional trauma of the fight. Some people need anger and hardness, some try to achieve a mushin or no mind type state, while others are just trying to have fun.
I just want to have fun with it. I tell the hardasses to join the Marin Corps where hard is a way of life, not a type of conditioning. I tell the Mushin guys that what they are chasing is to close to religous fever for me. For me its a sport I enjoy with my kids, whether we box or grapple and we are here to have fun. Just my two cents.
I thought this was an e.d. thread. Its a serious condition that effects millions of men worldwide drastically affecting their lives. In fact, the gentleman that called Mike out probably suffers from it, hence his overcompensating frustration. #cialis
Do I get a check or something for tha plug?
I started training "submission grappling" with a MMA gym, I also did muay thai/kickboxing sparring with them for 2 years. Honestly I feel like I've been kneed, elbowed, headbutted, punched and kicked in the head/face more since I started training straight up jiu jitsu. Ha, maybe that's just me. I'm in the group that I can take a punch, but that doesn't mean I like it. I once sparred 5 minutes with a 5x Savate world champion, got hit in the face repeatedly but was never taken off my feet. There's a certain pride in being able to say that, but ultimately I feel getting good at jiu jitsu and not getting tapped is way harder. Just my opinion.
I still think of myself more as an MMA guy, though I haven't fought in over 3 years. I still very much enjoy training, and training others, but the grappling aspect has always been my favorite part. I find it the most interesting, and mentally challenging. This is probably also why I've never liked the Gi. These days I stick to no-Gi grappling when it comes to competing, and I definitely don't think I'm any "softer," nor do I think that the guys I train with who only do jiu jitsu are soft, at least, not because of that. Some people are "soft" and some aren't (though that is surely subjective), but it has nothing to do with the sport they choose.
Alright, I forgot I got a papercut today at work, right in the web between my index and middle finger;
And I just cracked my knuckles and it opened up again...
Maybe I AM soft...so what?
I'm like a feather from a baby dove compared to an Mma fighter but hard like a diamond from Mercury compared to Thai lady boys :)
I prefer to compete in jits competitions but leading up to my first MMA fight, I was confident but 1 thing I wasn't looking forward to was the getting hit part. Once I got in the cage though, the adrenaline was pumping and I knew the punches were happening but I didn't feel them. The same goes for a horrible knee I got caught with in the eye. I didn't feel it but it definitely left a mark. On the plus side, I did a great raccoon impression for the next few days. :cool: What I'm trying to say is that fight gave me the confidence to get back in the cage without worrying about being hurt by the punches but I still prefer jiu jitsu comps, they're just more fun in my opinion! I DON'T think that makes me or anyone else soft!
