It's funny, I just ordered my first gi today. I've been rolling no gi for about a year now, on and off, but the school I train in is focused on gi training, so I figure I'd try it out. It means I can train more, and there's no harm in mixing it up. Should be interesting...

I love no gi and it only makes sense for mma. I do see where the grips you use in the gi could help for self defense purposes. I think I could choke out a guy with his own shirt.

gi chokes are fun as hell even choking some one out with there jacket is even more fun

Perth has 2 jj seasons, the gi and no gi season. So maybe you could wait til summer, or do mma coz all their jj is no gi. I'd just ask the instructor if you can just wear gi pants and rash top. But then they won grade you because you can't show how good you can pull on lapels and collars. Sucks huh

mma jujitsu is mostly unranked i have found for rankings best to stick with the gi for jj

coming from a sambo background before i got into 10thpjj, i hate wearing the gi/kurtka, it was like wearing a 5 pound burlap sack for two hours a day; not to mention getting my fingers caught up in someone elses and having them sprained or broken. I still train with it on 50% of the time, but given the option I'll go no gi any day.

The way Sak used the gi against Royce was masterful that should of been a big statement right there.

I think it just depends on your goal with JJ. I train both as much as possible.
