On a serious note fighting is what warriors do. I think Moon of the year is an extension from warrior of the year to a team, so essentially the team that fought the best would be Moon of the year. Granted there may be a few other factors such as who is putting our name out there and the such, but at the end of the day how do you do that? By producing mat monsters. So i think that Denny is on the right track.
Did that retired guy produce a lot of high level wins? If no then he isn't warrior of the year. Did this person and his team have a great year producing mad competitors and fighters that where successful? If yes then vote for their school for Moon of the year.
10th Planet Jiu Jitsu changes lives. I've run into tons of peoples and heard hundreds of stories of how 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu has changed their life. Whether it helped them though a divorce, through the death of a loved one, through a dark period of their life, or just inspiration to change their perspective on life. To me those events way far heavier that competition results. The results are a bi product of having an inspirational leader, a functional based system and philosophy that encourages greatness through positivity. Without those things, the warrior doesn't exist.
But that is not what a warrior does that's what a priest, monk, imam, preacher, instructor does. ALL GOOD THINGS. There is no downplaying what an instructor provides for people (i'll be the first to but that's not what we are doing here we are looking for a warrior.
This is what the merriam-webster dictionary says warrior is: a man engaged or experienced in warfare
This is what dictionary.reference.com says warrior is: a person engaged or experienced in warfare
I think I know what it means to be a warrior, you have no idea who I am.
IF we are talking medals as a team 10th planet omaha has over 50 this year. More than half are all gold.
i was trying to do the quote thing with dennys reference to what he thought a moon or warrior of the year should be. I fucked it up lol
So it looks like the clear cut nominees are
Warrior:
Big Red
Ant
Dewitt
Yockel
Moon:
San Fran
Omaha
Rochester
Who else?
Let the real sales pitches commence on the actual poll threads.
Powerful Coach Herzog! Very true though. I'm one of those people who has been permanently changed by BJJ, and specifically the 10th planet community.
That's why I'm torn between SF and Roc for MOTY. One has represented 10th planet in a major way in the public eye. The other has been a big platform for unity. Both are doing great things for 10th planet.
I wanna also nominate springfield if i can vote for two. We travel a lot to compete. Our guys have to travel 7 to 10 hours to compete and i always see springfield on the road as well. I know their medal count is high!
Warrior: Me
Moon: My moon
End of thread.
Thats your opinion and you're certainly entitled to it, however thats not the consensus of the 10th Planet family. You brought that same arguement up last year and it was clearly proven wrong by virtue of this guy winning 2011 Nibiru Warrior of the Year.
I'm not trying to throw out or cast a vote for myself I'm just sharing my feelings on the matter.
As a proud coach I'd love to see Yockel win it!
Im voting Big Red for Warrior, and even if he lives close maybe we could all give a donation or something instead or match something from HQ to help that warrior make it to ADCC easier etc ... I know he was wanting to do seminars to help get money for said excursion. maybe in his case the reward could be different if he wins ... just putting it out there. As for moon, I ll go with either Sanfran or Rochester :)
Here's what I think. I think that the whole format should be changed. Everybody has their own opinion and some of them are good, some maybe not so good. In the end, it becomes a popularity contest. There should be a Jedi Council that decides who is worthy of any "title". Anybody who wants to be a contender submits a few videos showcasing their accomplishments of the past year and then the Council watches them and decides. Simple as that. I would trust the opinions of more senior guys like Einstein, Denny, Compella, and of course Eddie over the forum numb nuts. Also, the Council may be more privy to other info about contenders that most people are not aware of. Like overcoming adversity to compete, personal hardships, etc. For some, the title is just bragging rights, for others, the title will help put food on the table. But whatever, this is just my opinion.
I think that the nominations presented so far have been pretty good. This isn't life or death and the votes are only allowed to be made by pro members. Things like this will always be somewhat of a popularity contest.
Let's not all get crazy. All we need is nominees so we can have an official vote. It doesn't matter if it turns out to be a popularity contest or if it's strictly judged on competition accolades, all that matters to me is the vote totals. If someone wins based on popularity then that means he's doing something right for the family. Vote for who you think has done the most to elevate the 10th Planet team the most. Some might think the red destroyer's ADCC performance did more for the system than anyone else, someone might think Dereck has done the most by developing Ant. Keep debating, I'm loving it :)
As my daughter would say "Whatever happens, whatever happens"
Warrior- tyler woolsey
Moon- Rochester
Oh shit wtf we're forgetting about Joe Rogan he always reps 10th planet by talking about it in podcasts, ufc commentary, plus he always rocks 10th planet shirts in front of big audiences like the ufc weigh ins, and he got his black belt after being devoted to the system for so long. Imagion all of the people who have started jiu jitsu because of Joe. I nominate Joe Rogan for warrior of the year!
I am a West Coast girl so I have to go with Mike DeWitt and, ofcourse, Nathan Orchard amazes every time I see him at SubLeague BUT I also have to give props to Kyra Batara... She is BAD ASS!!
Don't forget us ladies... We are going to be a force in 2013!
10th Planet Portland had 2 World Champions Chad Kyser,James Gamet,Subleague Overall Title, NW Tag Team Champions,Bronze No-Gi Worlds,Nomination for "Best Gym in Oregon", by NWFS Magazine! Thanks to 10P Spokane,10P Eugene, DeWitt, and Orchard, for all they did to help and support. Proud of my guys, of course, and i'm at HQ now,so i'm allowed to vote for what WE DID in 2012 :)...........Moon: 10th Planet Portland, Warrior :James Gamet,or Chad Kyser,or Vlad Novikov....AND Joe Rogan!!! When your 10th Planet for life, we all win!!!!
James Gamet took gold at Gracie Worlds after only about 6 months training. He is Subleague Qualifier Champion, Subleague Finals Champion, Oregon Open Champion and Tag Team Jiu Jitsu Champion. All of this in just his first year of training. Oh, and he has not lost a match in competition, EVER.
