Hey Crazies,
I love that Renato character. I think it's pretty cool how his last name "Laranja" means Orange in Portuguese. Hey, what was Rhassan's last name again?

Chris,
I've been travelling to Brazil on and off for five years now and am almost fluent in portuguese.
Renato's nickname "láranja" means something close to "the grinder" in english - it's tough to exactly translate, but it's like seeing someone grind their teeth together.
Leave it alone for now and try to give the guy a break...
Laranja is a combination of two words, "La Aranha" or "La Aranja." It is a Brazilian word meaning "The Spider." In that part of Brazil close to Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay the "nh" is pronounced like a "j" and they are used interchangeably. The Argentinians, Paraguayans, and Uruguayans do the same but they pronounce the "ll" like a "j." Renato's nickname is a slang/phonetic spelling of a regional pronunciation. I hope this clears up some of the confusion.
I have video of Renato rolling at HQ and you will all see it on upcoming episodes of MTS.
Thank you God!!! Wait... Thank you Jason!!!
this whole thread is cracking me up..:D lol
Did he ever mention who he got his bjj blackbelt from?
I think he did on one of the episodes of MTS. I could be wrong though.
I wish I could do the Robert De Niro frown/head nod. That shit looks stone cold, yet friendly. Pure gold.
Drama can be good. Is Renato's girl friend a practitioner of jiu-jitsu? I wonder if Renato makes love with his gi top on or do you think he just wears his black belt.
WOW!!! This thread is catching up on "the ultimate ass thread" as well ass the "10th Planet Cruise" thread.... LMMFAO!!!
cool... be sure to PM me that info as well... In case I forget to check this thread!!!
This just in, Renato is doing Abu Dhabi 2011!!! And he's gonna rep 10th Planet, so he says... :)
Lmao

OK I just watched MTS 10 & whether this Renato thing is real or not anymore isn't the point... It's just starting to get annoying now!!! I just want to fast forward through the video every time I see him but the buffer on that player is way to slow so I'm forced to watch it if I want to see any techniques!!! I still want to see him roll though...
In his defense if you train with a gi your nogi escapes will get better and your wrist control will get better just from practicing gi grips.
I have to be honest, there's been some awkward moments with Renato in past episodes, but after seeing MTS 10 (great episode by the way) I'm finding the Renato saga pretty damn funny. I'm also quite sure that's the intention....Quote:

*SPOILER ALERT*
....come on, the guy broke into some freestyle Brazilian rapping - or as he calls it, "h"apping - for God's sake! Priceless! :)
LoL, all that gi training didn't help you at Eddie's seminar @ 10th Planet Decatur when you tried to reverse his rubber guard!!! I'm just fucking with ya man, even though it was hilarious & we all had a good laugh at you & Don getting his new nick name (Singlet)... But I do agree with you about the gi to an extent... The gi does help with your escapes & grips but like Eddie says "pulling on collars does nothing for you clinching & squeezing.. The only way to get better at clinching & squeezing is to be constantly clinching & squeezing"... However Your instructor (Paul Joyner @ Gracie 601 in Meridian, MS.) and I had a long conversation on the phone about this & we came to the conclusion that it's better for nogi guys to train in the gi with the rule that you cannot grab the gi under any circumstances... Then the only thing you have to deal with is the traction that the gi creates... If you're gonna train in a gi to make your nogi game better, this is how it should be done in my opinion...

I know that the tone when writing can be misinterpreted so I want to say from the start that the tone of this post is totally friendly. Josh, since you agree with Ryan that the gi helps with your escapes no-gi, could you explain how the gi makes your no-gi escapes better? Like I said the tone is totally friendly.
I just did... TRACTION!!! Go & read my post before this one again... I.E. The gi creates traction which makes your escapes harder to preform... If you can do them with the gi on, then you can practically fly out of some positions without the gi... Just look at Marcelo Garcia or any Abu Dahbi champ... Even Eddie started out learning escapes in the gi... I'm not saying that it's impossible to have good escapes without the gi, I'm just saying that the gi makes them better, in about half the time in my humble opinion... (tone is totally & utterly friendly as well Bro)
I see where you are coming from and I've heard that before. I started BJJ with the gi and still train about 50% of the time in the gi ( when I'm healthy ). The gi is like training wheels on a bike that help you learn how to ride. You can learn to ride a bike without training wheels too.
I personally don't agree with the idea that the gi helps you learn no-gi escapes or anything else no-gi faster. The only thing the gi does is slow the game down in a way which has nothing to do with technique which I feel is counter productive to learning no-gi. But it is 'a universe full of infinite posiblilties' in the words of Matt Horwich and people are going to have different opinions and philosophies. Good stuff Josh.
It's hard to explode out of submissions with the gi so you rarely practice your explosiveness so that's why pure jiu jitsu players have way less explosive power than wrestlers. Explosiveness is crucial for mma.
ALOT of submission defenses with the gi require you to hold on to a part of your gi for defense. Like if someone sits back for an ankle lock, you're supposed to sit up and grab his collar for defense. And when someone goes for a kimura on you, you're supposed to grab your pants for defense. Or when someone has you in spider web going for an arm bar, you're supposed to grab your own collar for defense. Or when someone is trying to RNC you, you're supposed to grab both your collars.
How does the gi help your nogi defense again??
Remember, the only guy to escape Marcelo's RNC in ADCC was Diego Sanchez who had never trained in the gi at that point. His explosiveness got him out :)
So should we all be just wrestler's with submissions instead of relaxing & relying on technique to prevail? I'm really confused, I thought that jiu jitsu was using technique to overcome power... But I'm in no position to make that kind of assessment, it's just always what I thought & believed...
I wouldn't say it's about being a wrestler but a good grappler. Explosiveness is a subset of technique in good grappling just as leverage, timing and balance are. It's better to have the technical movement of a tekk sharp than to just try to muscle out of something but sharp technical movement with the right leverage, timing and explosiveness is better than technique alone any day.
Watch ADCC. All the guys that train with the gi use explosiveness at the right moment when they are grappling. Marcelo, Braulio, Galvao ....
I am currently re-learning the pains of where gi and no-gi are different. Like armbar defense with the gi is waaaaay harder than without the gi (if you ask me). They have so many different handles and ways to control you that it's much harder to defend the farther down the submission they get. Without the gi I find that I can defend long enough to get enough space to just get my elbow past the hips and then it is safe (unless i'm in spiderweb). That being said training with the gi makes it easier to set stuff up with the gi. How are you going to get used to people just pulling their arms out of armbars if you are holding onto their sleeve/collar/pants. I guess you could just not grab onto that stuff, but that is basically no-gi with a bulky rash guard.
No one has commented on the rolling in a gi without grabbing clothes rule!!! What do you guys think about that? I've tried it... it's just like nogi but a little harder... Has anyone else tried this? if not, do it & share your experiences..
fair enough...
hijacked.
Just got in from practice. Good points Jason and Eddie. Josh anytime I put paul in mission control he grabbed my foot so I asked Eddie and now I know what to do, it was funny and Eddie I never doubted you. You and Royce are the main reason I started jits. As far as the tone of everyones comments, all i can say is this, im glad we can debate things in a friendly manner.
Im pretty much the weakest in my class and the lightest so I only have technique to rely on. The gi may not help you bigger guys no-gi game but it has helped mine. Im not saying its a night and day difference but my knee cut passes have improved. I cant contribute all of it to gi but the gi slowed the game down and I was able to rep the technique at a slower pace at about 60 to 75%. I have practiced no-gi alot more than gi (cause its more fun) and its all gonna come down to what you like more.
