When it comes to the webz, one should always be suspicious. Especially on first posters. My thoughts when I read op's post were: two techs a class sounds about right, how does he know these guys are random?, who sits out 10 minutes from a 'puffy eye'? and does anything remotely 10th planet mean, RubberGuard?.
Im not piling on this guy. Dont care. We should just realize that martial arts and jj brings all kinds. And while I like how we openly and unconditionally welcome all new members, we should not side with or believe them till they prove themselves consistent personalities on the forum with others able to vouch for them. Outlining this so our community can learn and grow from it.
John, well played man. Damage controlled and rep safe. I woulda been pissed too. Many of us have had bad experiences involving jj and the net.
there will only be more people out there like this to come as we grow. its w/e, if this wasnt happening itd mean we were doing something wrong :)
In the time that I've spent training alongside John (before we went separate ways to launch our own gyms) he has never had malicious intent for anybody on the mat. He is nothing if not passionate for jiujitsu (10th Planet especially) and the dedicated approach he brings to his students shows - a lot of the Fighter Factory beginners in our local light-contact & grappling circuits show real progress every time with their grappling skill. The only thing you could possibly fault him on is his french accent (j/k) :P
As for Andrew, it's sad to see he's claiming to be a student of GroundControl & Will-Machado in NZ. I suggest he's perhaps shown up to a single class and he really should take that off...

Look forward to catching up at the comp this weekend!
On another random side note, it's clear Fighter Factory is having a positive effect on the local Jiu Jitsu scene... who could have ever thought Eddie Bravo would come to Hamilton, NZ?!?
Fixed! =D

Don't worry John, I don't think anyone here thinks any less of you because of one disgruntled student's/prospective student's opinion. Unless there's a highly disproportionate percentage of legitimately disgruntled students, benefit of the doubt should go with the teacher/owner/instructor in my opinion. I'd roll with you brother.
This guy has successfully infiltrated the 10th Planet forums.

Andrew. I think you are probably still reading this thread. I am speaking directly to you. Please take this criticism as constructive.
You are what is known as a "pussy". I am not trying to emasculate or degrade you by any means. I am using this term under its most literal function by its abstract definition. I came to this conclusion when you repeatedly questioned the structure and ones ability to learn under said conditions. You have never truly trained and when you were first introduced to real training you tattled on the nets like a "pussy". Go back to the gym, shut up, and train. That is how those that are better than you got there. Good luck man.
Don't forget there are at least two sides to any story and seldom more than one is heard. John is a great guy and I'm quite sure this was mostly a case of this guy not liking the style of training that is used by 10th Planet as this lesson plan sounds about standard. Also after watching his video about this training day he complains about free rolling with all levels of belts, and how it seems too hard for him. He seems to me to be complaining about the jits style in general. Just watch the video and you'll see that I don't think he gets what jiu jitsu is all about.

I do sympathize with this guy somewhat in that he clearly hasn't had the ways Jiu Jitsu explained to him very well and he seems scared and hurt by his experience. Plus jits isn't easy for us all and I feel his frustration. But that isn't anyones fault but his own. If he wanted to he could have told people to go easy and I'm sure they would have. Maybe someone just needs to sit down with him and explain how shit works.
Keep in mind this is coming from me, a guy who has had questions about 10th Planet structure in the past and is generally jits tarded and even I think this guy is being a wanker.
Seriously people lets be more careful how we react to these things, check it out first and then decide.
Move over Tony Robbins... Bobby Rivers is here to motivate. LolQuote:

The whole situation is ridiculous. I have nothing but good things to say about John. He is a superb coach, a mad grappler and, above all, a really awesome dude. The environment in the gym is awesome, the dudes are more than just training partners, and if HOMMANDO wanted to take it easy, he could have just asked. I was, and still am really, a complete beginner to Jiu Jitsu and the 10th planet system, and I have only ever been treated with complete respect and care for my lack of experience.
First of all, absolutely, I understand the need to defend your name and your school. And, I understand the want to defend your fellow teammates. Makes sense, for sure. But, seriously, Guys, why are you trying to ridicule this person? This dude quite obviously has some significant emotional and esteem issues. It took me a couple videos before I even figured out he didn't have some form of MR. Honestly, even considering the maximum amount of negative publicity he could possibly give to this branch of 10thP, this kid is still far worse off. I have to argue that this is a pretty clear case of should be taking the high road. Its a bummer when someone who doesn't have it all going for them resorts to attacking those that do. But, honestly, its way more of a bummer when those that do have it going for them come down on someone in this kid's condition. You guys all have the courage to train and get to experience the joy and beauty of this sport. Most of you are probably pretty capable of meeting romantic interests and dont have to name your online personas something like "ho master x." This kid is actually really, objectively sad. It lowers you to make fun of him.
That said, it was really cool seeing just how many members of John's school came on here to defend him and assure the quality and lack of ego that goes on there. In a lot of ways, this kid's outburst is positive for your school. No one had a single actual negative thing to say about you. And, now, where many people hadn't heard of you, they sure have now. Its definitely true that, especially in these days, falsehood often manages to obfuscates the truth. But, in such tight and bonded communities like this, its situations like these that show the importance of positivity and the team.
But yeah. Maybe leave that kid alone for now. He is probably reading all of this. And he is probably already hurting enough.
So you talk about him being mr like he's not reading this after saying he's probably reading this?
Im from a different school of thought. I took everything you said into account before I made my post. Negative feedback is still feedback. Would it be better to ignore him completely or to throw him the proverbial bone? I think it is fair to let him know that his complaints are unwarranted and that he is not as fragile as he thinks. That if he was willing to push past fear and pain all of his fantasies that he vicariously lives through his youtube channel could be realized. He probably lacks discipline, commitment, and work ethic which causes him to get frustrated with and quit everything at the first sign of resistance to his preconceived notions. He needs to humble himself and gain proper perspective. This will ultimately enrich his life in more ways than on the mats. Im just trollin to change lives one post at a time.
+1
All I can say is that nobody wants to see him at the gym after what he did and I don't blame them! I personally don't want him training with us either. Unintentionally or not, the way he conducted himself is unforgivable! It could have been easily prevented if Andrew talked to me and raised his concerns about the way I teach but he decided to go public with it instead...
The dude made a poor decision and now as a result he's not welcome at our gym.
Thats a fair point about me raising MR. I just intended to lay on just how likely I think it is that this kid is probably in need of clinical help. But, perhaps that did cross the line to simply name calling.
Second though, the majority of your paragraph is not a troll at all and is genuinely the most constructive, for him anyways, post in this whole 12 pages. If you really think this kid is on the same playing field as most functional people, doesn't that seem just a little bit more productive than calling him a pussy or anything else?
I dont blame anyone for being pissed or not wanting him around or whatever. The reason I didnt address him in my post was because I was genuinely just trying to raise an ethical issue. Its one thing to troll someone who just sucks and decides shitty things, and its another thing to troll someone who is debilitated in someway. IF you really honestly think this kid is on the same playing field as you, fine say whatever you want to him. But, I just wanted to pose what I think is a strong possibility that this dude is in a bad way and probably in several regards.
I mean, do you really not feel bad for this dude?
Anytime you are vastly effecting someones life in anyway on the internet forums, it kinda feels like trollin to me. And by this definition Eddie's the biggest troll on here.
Anybody else notice the vid on his channel with him in a brown 10PJJ rank shirt? I believe it is called "O2 trainer MMA conditioning part 1"
Just an observation among many, many others here...
