I've tapped someone bigger than me from regular side control...just the position that is. I'm 155 and he had about 20 pounds on me. I've also tapped someone from mission control. Haha. I haven't gotten any lame taps from someone with skill though, just regular taps.
to sort of add to what chris said, if you find yourself tapping because of lockdowns or certain squeezes not meant to be submissions then you either might want to rethink your hobby or learn to deal with the pain.
i have a left shoulder issue. my range of motion isnt half of what my right shoulder is capable of. simply locking in an amaricana or kimora on my left arm initiates instant pain. for my right side, they actually have to lock it in and crank a good few inches.
to compensate i protect my left shoulder like i would if i was fighting with a newborn in my left arm.
I agree that I'd never call someone else a pansy for tapping but I've certainly felt like one from time to time. It's definitely important to learn the difference between "I'm uncomfortable" and "I'm in danger." I've been tied up in a tangle of arms and legs knowing I'm probably a move or two away from getting tapped, but you have to learn to fight through just being in a bad position. This is a good discussion, though, and it's made me think about what to do the next time someone taps to a non-submission of mine. Good thread. :)
i'll have to say i disagree. maybe it's an ego thing or maybe it's just the fact of being a female & wanting to prove that you're not a little priss. i like to practice my escapes from any submissions as much as possible. when you're in a tourney you're not just gona tap as soon as you "think" someone has you in a sub. it's almost like you're not gona just give up as soon as someone mounts you? i understand where you're coming from with the whole injury risk thing. i personally just don't like losing. :/Quote:

But yea, I don't just tap for the sake of tapping, I do like to struggle and work to escape certain holds. And I do understand and have shared your frustration when people tap before you really get a chance to work the finish like you would have to in competition. But there are so many times when I don't tap to a submission in training, for example, a guillotine, and I ride it out and try to escape and sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, but often I later regret it when my neck is sore as shit and then I think damn, my ego got the best of me again and now I'm in pain. The trick is finding the happy medium I guess.
Gabby, I think they are refering to rolling vs tourneys. When you roll and some beef body is grinding your face with a guillotine. Rather then let him destroy your neck and crush your face you tap to restart. Lesson learned. Now if ur in a tourney and make that mistake, you endure the pain and work to escape or hope he gets tired from squeezing your face.
Also some of us need to go to work the next morning. As much as we would love to treat everynight like its abu dabi, we have to make sure we don't injure ourselves and screw our families over because now we can't work.
In my first tournament final match I tapped to an incredibly lame neck crank.. They had applied barely any pressure and I could have probably gotten out of it but I tapped without thinking. Regretted it almost instantly(still think about it from time to time).. first thing out of my mouth was an apology to herzog not sure if he knew or even heard me say it lol.
