I don't know what I believe anymore!!! I've heard quite compelling arguments from both sides... Sometimes I do think my Gi game helps my Nogi game & sometimes I think it holds me back as far as explosiveness & playing a tight clinch game!!! Fuck it, I'll just keep training in both until I'm well-rounded enough to form a legitimate decision...

I'm gettin' me one of those tie-dyed Gis to throw off my BJJ-comservative classmates...

The Gi won't make it out of global warming alive. And one of the only reasons so many of the top JJ players use the Gi is because thats what all the cool kids were doing. Once more and more people start devoting as much time to Nogi as has been devoted to Gi, you will see a huge increase of the top JJ players being purely Nogi. I personally never intend to put on a Gi because it would frusterate the hell out of me, all the holding and stalling.

This argument has always sounded to me like Heads and Tails arguing over who's the better Coin...
I could not thank everyone here at 10th Planet enough for helping out my traditional Gi work with your nogi world for sure! There are nights where I'll focus on limiting my technique to nogi techniques and I have brought my game up several levels as a direct result. But the flip side is true too. My best groundwork partner is a Brown Belt Judo guy who outweighs me by close to 70 lbs and when he gets Side Control and clamps my Gi to the ground; well, there aren't many occassions I get out, but I've tried for years!! And when I roll with nogi now, even if you get Side Control for a little bit -I KNOW I'm going to at least pull half guard.
And in the self defense catagory, how many times have you seen fights between 2 shirtless, beltless, towel-less, sockless, robe-less, jacket-less people in a place without cords or ropes? It would be a mistake to think that a slightly experienced JJ player couldn't choke you out with your own thin T-shirt. For those guys who rip off thier shirts at the start of a fight, I'm not going to take off mine; and if I do, it will be for the express purpose of choking the other guy out with it.
And if you don't practice Gi grips very often, well than your gassed-out club hand is going to set in a lot faster than mine...
