When Brandon was kicked out it was because I created a link on mma.tv asking about his rank. Within a day he was gone.
Ari was under very similar situation.
You may be joking but I don't fuck around when loons want to make a name off the system. By the way, many people don't actually believe the helio story. First off, helio was bigger than Carlos. The picture evidence is everywhere. Second, that story about never doing bjj and the wole helio narrative only came out after the death of Carlos cause Carlos would have had his head for that bullshit. Third, helio could do pull-ups.
Notice only the white belts and blues want it to be true that you can magically substitute mat experience with YouTube viewership.
I agree with this. Bruce has been nothing but crazy cool. Cora has been competing her ass off and her rubber guard is fantastic. Sure Bruce isn't certified to run a school but his heart is genuine and you can't deny that he's done an excellent job with his daughter. Please, enough with the harsh posts, Bruce is a good guy, Jesus.
Anyone who thinks it's fine to have someone who is unqualified teach ANY martial art should go lurk at Bullshido for a while. The martial arts industry has no oversight, except that which we provide ourselves. There's no government ranking and certification process or anything like that. Price is irrelevant to the discussion. If you're learning from an unqualified instructor, whether you pay 200 bucks a month in an unbreakable 10 year contract, or it's 100% free, you are getting sub standard instruction which can result in injury or death (and this risk is not confined to the "dojo").
Bruce said he wanted the focus to be on self defense, but most of what I see out of Cora's vids is sport jits. Even if he had developed some understanding of these things, he has no idea how to apply them to self defense situations. His free unqualified self defense jiu jitsu lessons could very easily lead to one of his students getting themselves hurt outside the gym. How many of us have rolled with "self taught" people before? Who know jits cause they "study" UFC fights? Sure, they may know somewhat how to do an arm bar, or an RNC, but they don't know jits, a fact which becomes instantly apparent while rolling.
To me, it's not about even about 10pjj, it's about jits as a whole. We, the jits community are the ONLY thing that can provide any type of quality control. We have a responsibility to the consumer, and to the art, to maintain our high standards, and to point out that which is unqualified or sub standard, because no one else will, and if we DON'T, then we all suffer. The art becomes diluted over time until it eventually becomes a joke. That affects all of us, whether we're 10pjj, or Gracie Barra, or MABJJ.
Despite the BJJ explosion since 1993, we are still a small community, and we all trace our lineages back to, essentially, a couple places. It's easy to shoot an email off to GB and ask if so and so in your community holds a GB rank. That's how fakes and pretenders get caught, because we find them. Random parent walks into a gym, sees a certification on the wall and assumes all is well, having no idea how easy those can be faked. These are serious issues. How proud of your lineage are you? We all know that by heart for a reason!
The predator stuff was largely the opinion of one guy. That's the kind of thing that should be dropped. It's an unsubstantiated allegation that shouldn't be thrown around lightly. There's no evidence of any wrongdoing by Bruce whatsoever. That all comes from one guy who thinks the way he posts is weird. Fair point, but that hardly makes him a predator. I personally don't post like that about my daughter, not because I lack Bruce's pride, but because I recognize that she's young, and there could come a time when she's older that she doesn't want to have her entire life on the internet, so I don't share a ton about her. But that's my choice, because I want her to have a choice someday about how much of her life is posted out there. There's a ton of parents in my FB news feed that clearly have different thoughts on that, as I get a ton of "look what jimmy did today!" every day.
If Bruce really wants to pursue his plan of offering free jiu jitsu lessons to underprivileged kids, which is an awesome idea imho, then he needs to be willing to put out the minimal effort required to becoming qualified to do so. He doesn't need to take the hot box route, he doesn't need to compete, but he does need to train. There are a ton of opportunities out there that he could take advantage of. He could go the Gracie Garage route, learn via Gracie University, and progress at his own pace, according to his own limitations, until such time that he can satisfy the minimum qualifications necessary to teach. Alternatively he could start lessons where Cora trains. Their jits is legit, whether it's 10p or not. The point is, having a qualified instructor is extremely important. Bruce, as he is today, is not qualified to teach jits. He has options which he could utilize to change that and become qualified. Until he does so, he should not teach, and in fact, if he did, he'd wind up on Bullshido. And for good reason.
Sounds like you might be getting my posts mixed up with other guys. I wasn't supporting kurzys opinion just making a joke. Like i posted early in the thread i have the luxury of joking in these situations as you may not. I dont even know this helio story that's being referenced. Not taking sides just making jokes. I wouldn't tell black belts in the system how to behave or what to say on the forum.
I liked bruce, hope he comes back and all but his dramatic reaction left him begging to be the target of some ribbing. If you look back I never said anything bad about the guy.
sad thread this one. as others have said, i feel bad that bruce thought it necessary to delete us from facebook, trying to look at it from bruces perspective, hes been seeing these kids in his neighbourhood, not up to much and he wants to try and give them a direction. just wants to show them what has made his daughter so happy. he tries to think up a plan to get them off the streets and into something that can help them. and then he figures he can at least be the first step and comes to the forum where he has constantly been because he wants his daughter to learn the system and if he was anything like me, felt like his has been welcomed into a family. and then with this intention, he posts up on the forum and fair enough he was shot down. i think the way he phrased it was bad and it could easily have been stuffed up. but from his perspective when he was expecting a warm reception and some good feedback he definitly didnt receive it. if he had said he wants to get kids off the sstreets and start them on the path to being great athletes then maybe it would have been taken better. definitly could have gone down better.
ive talked to him quite a bit to him on here and facebook since he appeared here. sure he pushed cora a lot and advertised her. but whether or he not he was qualified to teach jiu jitsu, insinuating him being a pedophile is off topic, extremely offensive and it doesnt matter if its coming from a black belt a white belt barack obama jesus or anyone else. i respect everyone here and when it comes to jiu jitsu ill listen, but theres no need to insult someone like that. and then others agreeing. its just sad that unless everything is clearly spelt out and all the special words are mentioned as to stop any chance of anyone taking what they say ni the wrong way that what people say is taken in generally the worst light.
what also affects me is that how so many people didnt voice their opinions about bruce if they shared them a lot sooner. i know i rant a lot on the forum, looks at this post and you can see its long enough. i hope no one comes out of the blue and starts insulting me.
i agree totally with what kurzy said. well written. i think that bruce could have sorted out something. had the guy from his gym cora goes to come once a week so there is a mix of a proper instructor as well as bruce helping. i dunno, gotta bad taste in my mouth from this thread.
I'm relatively new to the 10p forums, I have always found the forums to be supportive, educational and motivational with just the right ammount of ball busting to make you feel like you're with your close friends. However sometimes unpleasant things just need to be said, Brent was right on with his comments. It was a needed reality check. From time to time we all need an honest ,harsh opinion from those looking in from the outside.
I stopped reading the Cora posts after my first few days here on the forums. Although I was impressed with Cora, i always felt like I was watching toddlers and tiaras 10th planet eddition.
I don't think you can be qualified to teach as a white belt, I'm certainly not, I read up and watch a lot of video but I still need to learn from someone who has put time in. Zach and John were black belts in other systems with not only a TON of teaching experience but they have fought and competed everywhere the could. They teach not only with their heart but with a mountain of experience to back it. They are also rocking 10p purple now.
Bottom line, Bruce isn't a bad guy just a little overzealous. Bruce has no business teaching this has been agreed on by enough people who know what they are talking about black, brown and purple belts. Brent was fucking wrong for accusing him of being a pedophile this is my opinion and that of many other people who have chimed in. Eddie has spoken on the matter and everything has been said at least twice unless Bruce wants to chime back in or anybody wants to apologies for the pedophile comments we can probably let it die now.
Greetings and salutations 10thplanetJJ...:) Apologies for the delay response. I come in here to set the record straight. I refrain from doing that earlier because of fear that my words and meanings will get twisted and stretch out of context like it has. But now it seems like this thing will not die and go away without me clearing it up.
I haven't been a member on here a year yet, but this site and the people in here have made me feel like I am a part of the family. I love that you open and willing to help a guy to better his daughter, even though I hold no ties to 10thplanet other than my MTS subscription. In this past year, I shared many things with this forum, mostly things about my daughter and her journey through this sport. Before I even posted a single thing on this forum, I have done my research to even get here. I found Ari and his sub101, and shinya Aoki, which led me to Master Eddie Bravo, which led me here to 10thplanetJJ. All of this research make me truly value the system more than ever. I am a student of this system, although I don't even go to any of your gym. Being a student, I mean I study it, even if I don't roll with grown men. I UNDERSTAND Master Eddie's vision of the system. I work in a business that has a system so I can appreciate and understand that with a system, anyone can learn this. You want everyone to learn and know your Jits, put it in a system. With the books, CDs, and MTS, I trust in his vision and I am confident that I can Master it. That is how powerful this system is, that a person like me who is willing to study the system via books, CDs, and MTS, can master the system without having a live instructor. YES, it would be best to have a live instructor. But not everyone can afford gym fees, or is fortunate to have a 10thplanet gym in their city. Sure people like me will not succeed in the system as those that go to a gym, but knowing the system can make us walk with more confidence than the regular Joe. But for me, sure it would be BEST that I train, but as stated many times over, I am not able, due to physical limitation, time, and money.
Physical, I have an abnormal should joint. Your shoulder is a ball and socket joint which gives you range of motion. Since JJ is all about range of motion and leverage, this is almost impossible for me. I play basketball for over 30 years and even with that, it doesn't use as much range of motion as JJ will. Not to mention that I won't have a grown man trying to rip my shoulder off. Having this kind of limb, is worst than not having any when it comes to this sport. And I am not going to risk injuries, I have family to feed.
Time, I am trying to balance my time between building a business and family. At this point in my life, its more about family than Bruce. I have a 1.5 yr old son and 10 yr old daughter. Here is my schedule, 7am take Cora to school, 8am drop Kato off with grandma, I go to the office. At 3pm I rush to pick Cora from school. At 3:30pm I cook for Cora while she does her homework. At 4:30 we drill at home. At 6pm we at the gym (Team Tooke). We don't get home until 8pm where wife cooks and I take off to go see clients and/or train my agents. I usually don't get home until 10-11pm. This is 5 days a week. On the weekend, I tried to sneak in family time and Cora's training in between my business. As the weekend is the time I really go out and help families since they will be home.
Money- per MONTH, I spent $167 on gym fee, $100-200 gas to gym, $120 tournament fees, $100-200 hotel (if tourney is out of town) so each month i'm looking at $300-500 for Cora's JJ. Now like I said many times over, I and my agents build our business by helping family save for their future, whether it be for their retirement or kids college, and protect their family assets. With that being said, some don't even have $50 a month to do any of that. So how can I justify myself spending more than what I already have? Especially for me.. its not about me anymore. Everything I do is for my daughter, I don't mind spending on my daughter because she loves what she does. But its NOT necessary for me to spend money on myself. Only a parent will understand what I am talking about. Deep down inside I just can't justify me spending anymore money on JJ other than that for Cora. I hope this clears things up.
AS for the PREDATOR / Pedophile thing, I have NEVER been so disappointed in my life than the day I read this. Its beyond words. Everything I have done this far in my life has always been to this motto " do the right thing". I'm not a religious man, I have never force my views upon anyone. I always believe that if I am a good man and do the right thing and don't hurt anyone, then I have a good place to be in this world. So to hear someone accuse me of such thing is beyond words, especially coming from a place where I regard as my "friends", a place where I have done nothing but share and share some more. Perhaps my problem is that I share too much, sorry its just my nature. When I really like something, I want to share it. It goes back to what I do for a living. I share information everyday. Having kids myself, all I ever wanted is to help kids. I just had an idea of wanting to help kids, but for that I am being called a predator. I know I haven't been here long, but come on, at least give me the benefit of a doubt. I've gone to many gym and everyone of those gym have parents sitting there watching their kids practice. I have yet to find a gym where there is absolutely no parents around while the kids are with the coaches. So with that being said, I just thought that you folks will understand and it not need to be detailed out in my posting. With crazy things that are being said online and in the forum these days, calling someone a predator should not be taken lightly. It could really ruin someone's reputation on and off line. Remember I do meet people from online at tournaments and such.
As far as me being overzealous with my daughter's training. Sure why not??? She's my pride and joy. When yall have kids, you will know what I am talking about, especially when she is good at what she does....:) Cora has always been online like Drago since she was a baby...:) All joking aside, that is not my intention. The reason why I post so much of Cora's video win or lose, its going up. Why???? its because when I was researching rubber guard in tournaments back a year or so ago, I couldn't find anything for kids. All I found was Denny's video which I've studied over and over like 100 times. I wanted that edge for Cora in the tournament, so I was searching for anything related to rubber guard in tournament. But I didn't find anything else other than Denny's which I've already told him. So I feel there is a need for it, that is why I want Cora to get really good at rubber guard and I will post everything out there, win or lose. I believe that if I had trouble finding kids doing rubber guard, maybe there are others like me that are looking for them also. So that is why I post everything up. Not to brag, not to insult the boys, just to get it out there. Like watching a great movie, if you love it, you want to share it right?? That is my way of sharing what I love. You might think I'm over doing it, but when I read all the bad things about what people say about the rubber guard, make me want to put it out there more and more. With this sharing come a price to pay, master eddie was on the money when he say that Cora will have a hard time getting kids in her guard because the word is out on her and her guard game. I watched many videos of tournament where an opponent is able to get their guard game so easily just by pulling it and jealous of that fact. No not for Cora, she had to fight for her guard every time now. So in each tournament, she's already have a disadvantage with coaches knowing her game and preparing their kids. BUT that is OK with us, that will not stop us from sharing it to the world. That is how much we are into this. Since then I have seen an increase of tournament videos of the rubber guard.
So to say I am wanting to ruin the brand. NO SIR, we will rep 10th no matter what. I promise to do my best to my ability to transfer what I learn to my daughter who will execute the system. If you say I'm living through my daughter..ok I accept that. I'm actually jealous of her to be able to do what she loves to do. But that is still OK, she's my daughter and if I can leave something for her before I die, besides my insurance money.. it will be my love for 10thplanet jiu jitsu. At 10 yrs old she already have the desire to teach JJ. This is the goal for any parents, to help guide their children to something good that they love and they are able to use that to make a good living and able to take care of themselves.
For ALL the friends that still believe in me, I want to thank you for your kind words and well wishes. YOu know who you are. 10th4L!!!!
There are so many topic and issues that others have brought up but I don't have the time to entertain them all. Yall just have to give this guy the benefit of the doubt. Or least don't put me to the stake just yet...
Personally, I'm really glad to hear that you plan on continuing to help Cora to become a champion if that's what she wants to do. I was concerned you had decided to pull her from Jiu Jitsu; nobody wants that.
Glad to see you back, Bruce. Great post.
I still think you should roll, even with that shoulder, at least until you determine for sure that it's impossible. (Which almost nothing is)
Im glad that you came back Bruce! I was worried they chased you away, Ive always enjoyed your posts of Coras videos. :-)
My parents were never around growing up I havent spoken to my dad in 5 years and have a 6 year old brother who Ive never met. so for me I always thought that your involvement with her BJJ and things she finds passion in was beautiful I cant even get my parents to ask what sports I like.
I can understand why people say if you havent done the sport you shouldnt teach but the one person who you have taught (cora) is better at the system then any whitebelt/bluebelt who criticized you in the past posts.
The question Ive been wodering from the start of this mess is, is there an age requirement for hotbox heads? Why couldnt cora spear head your free kids class program? Something to ask Eddie and Zog about.
If people treated there coworkers how they jumped on you they would have been fired, they can claim it was to protect the system all they want but forming which hunts and calling out people as bad parents or predators is equally bad for the systems reputation IMO
Im glad you came back to the forum, I hope to see more of the triangle queens videos in the future
this. you dont have to become a world champion. you can roll around that injury for sure. you just told us about your job. it doesnt sound like your shoulder being sore will keep you out of work.
all of this is said with love. if you really want to help cora, training yourself is the only way to help to the fullest. i promise the day you stop making excuses, and start training, will be one of the best days of your life.
If somebody goes for your bad shoulder just tap - it's no big deal.
Ace bandage that limb to your side get er done! Nobody can rip it off with it attached to your side. Watch videos of Rener with both hands tied and he still submits people with just his legs. You to can have that skill, if you just work on it!! As for time and money, those are lame excuses that thousands struggle with everyday and find a way to make it work.

Agreed, Bruce I suffered a shoulder sprain/bicep muscle sprain in April and even after I warm up sometimes it still feels on and off. I tap in practice soon as someone locks in a hold (in my preinjury experience, by the time someone has the figure 4 it's 95% of the way there anyways, I prob can count on one hand the number of times I managed to escape the figure 4 lock on an arm once their mind was set on an Americana or Kimura, and I have/had flexible shoulders too). If you tell ur training partners to be respectful of ur shoulders they will (that doesn't mean get sloppy, have them remind u when u do).
Is it possible for u to discuss with Cora's instructor if u could come in for a class once or twice a month for a discount (that's still nowhere being ideal, but at least u'd be hitting the mat a couple times instead of none). The other thing I would try to research is any local jiu jitsu clubs at a college or something, some of those run free and the only expense u would pay would be ur gas and time to drive and park there (with the Harvard club I train at I just pay for parking on my accord and my gas).
Anyways welcome back.....
lol at the X-ray, but we get the idea. All it would take is telling instructor your concerns and about injured shoulder... He should only put you with people who can go easy. The only other issue that could genuinely hold someone back is money. Talk to them and maybe they'll understand. Lots of gyms have a sliding pay scale for people who simply dont have the means to pay for bjj
Bruce, I'm very happy you didn't get run off. You are raising your daughter beautifully, don't listen to anyone giving you pointers on family, you're doing an outstanding job. If people want to bring their kids to you for jiu jitsu instruction who are we to say you can't show them what you know? My advice to you would be to recommend they join any Bjj school and have them subscribe to MTS and breakdown what you know of 10th Planet philosophy. I don't see anything wrong with that.
Please continue to post Cora's competition videos, I am her biggest fan :-)
To ALL the guys that think I should train. I want to thank you for all your encouragement. I really do. I just want you to know that I have gone and thought through this already. Believe me, for a competitive person such as myself plus my love for the sport on top of my love of the 10thplanet system, if I think there would be any chance of me training, I would do it in a heart beat. I know you all mean well and it warms my heart to know that you all care. It really does, but as of right now, I'm just focusing on my daughter. She has a better future than I do in this sports. Besides I do have my own sport already, battling men 6'4" 200 lbs plus in the paint gives me great joy as you getting someone in the rubber guard. Or crossing a 20 yr old kid over, making him look like he is 50 yrs old, I get a rush. I do thank you all so much, and although it seems like i'm ignoring your advice, I am not and always appreciate your advice.
Thank you Master Eddie for your advice. Like I have shared with a couple on this forum, I know that I don't know much. But from what I know, it will be opening doors to this world of Jits for the kids. Also I know one day Cora will out grow my knowledge, that is why I am trying to surround myself with people who are real professionals. I have made many contacts during our travels to tournaments and even top competitors in hope that one day when Cora out grow my instruction that I will have those guys for her to turn to. Case in point is you and all the 10thplanet guys. As for raising Cora, I am doing what I think is right. There isn't any book on how to raise a kid, and if there is one, its probably written by those who don't even have kids. To be honest, they did almost ran me off, but thanks to a few good friends on here, they reached out to me and I thank them for that. Also you have become like family to us and I want to thank you for taking Cora under your wing. We will continue to rep your system with the highest of integrity. And if I didn't mention before I have been referring my friends or whom ever contact me about JJ to find a closest gym to them and if they can't find one, I can give them referrals as I have met many great coaches. With Cora's name out online, I do get people asking me all the time. And for those who are new to JJ, they always ask me what are all those crazy moves Cora doing to the boys?? I refer them here. I'm just a sharing fool..:) There are a few parents that go to our gym that come on and learn from the MTS as well after they see how much Cora has improved since I injected 10thplanet system into her game. As far as videos go, I have taken down almost all the old ones and will post new ones up as we have many tourney coming up this fall and winter. You will see the vast improvement in her game. I think you will be proud of her when you see what we have been working on. Thank you again for all your kind words and encouragement.
Yeah, I can tell that Bruce's situation is def worse than mine so I do feel for his hesitancy to hit the mat (I still stand behind the believe if he were paired with the right partners in class to respect the injury he would be ok, but again he knows his body best and I'm not the one to tell him what to do or how he should feel). I was trying to relate to him from a certain degree, so hopefully that came across a little.Quote:
A shoulder sprain??? Dude did you even seen that X-ray??!!??!
Nice Coach, and I hope Bruce and Cora do visit you at some point:cool:Quote:
Any time Bruce is in Ny he has a place to train for free.
Kurt Warner has a decent book out there where he and his wife give their perspective on kids and family, I don't agree with everything he presents but the majority is pretty solid. I know Mac Bledsoe (Drew Bledsoe's Dad) used to answer parent's phone calls and emails too on parenting tips. At the end of the day everyone's life journey is different, what works for me (when my folks raised me) might not be the best for the next person and so on.....and yes I am one of those guys without kids but sharing what I know from my experience being raised and from my close friends and family what they've gone through. At some point Cora will need to become her own person (esp when she gets to high school and college) so Bruce keep doing what you're doing to lay the foundation then the rest is up to her.Quote:

I feel the love of 10th planet!!!!
bruce, good to read youre back, family might fight one another but you cant kick them out.
im saying this as a friend, if i was anywhere near wher you are i would come visit and KICK YOUR ARSE ONTO THE MAT UNTIL YOU ROLL! :D whose that mma fella the one with the missing forearm? the one tht is kicking arse in mma? his jits is just different because he worked around it. it reminds me of the movie 300, the dude loses his eye and all he says is "the gods felt fit to bless me with a spare." you've got two arms, youve got passion for the sport and no need to compete. if it hurts when lying on it then work on your other side. but by doing nothing you're not living at all. (jiu jitsu wise)
and sorry about the upcoming low blow but what do you think bruce lee would do if he had your shoulder? he stuffed up his backand he turned that into more training, if you can believe the stories, you focused on moving only his big toe while lying in bed without moving anything else. stop thinking of training as rolling with massive 300 pound slabs of muscled super saiyans and realise that its called the gentle way for a reason. jiu jitsu has so many facets that it is possible to work for everyone. and as others hav said, if you dont want do somthign tap. make sure you train with the right people.
stop being inflexible and flow like water be water my friend. ;)
im saying this with the best intentions, and with the last idea that by you training you are giving the children you want to help a better chance at sticking with jiu jitsu with every rep you put in yourself. if you are really working for the kids then help them in any way you can. (training jiu jitsu being the best way) ;)
sorry if you're offended and think that sounds like im guilt tripping you, i am guilt tripping you and you should start doing jits. :)
Great post Issac. As for me, and my opinion on Bruce's training excuses, I am out of words.
...but you know what they say about pictures....

The SB03 Shoulder Brace by EVS.
Bruce prolly 90% of the folks on here have injuries and train around them. I'm a prime example as well as Coach Herzog. For the sake of Cora's development it would greatly help her if you trained as well. It is possible to train around injuries, granted not easy but possible:cool:
not to mention, think of all the times you can sit around after a good training, mug of high percentage protein shake in your hand and chat about the mysterious "tap that got away" that my friends is bonding shit together stronger than diamonds
cheers brother, not only does the shoulder brace help a mega tonne, it also looks god damn sexy, mix of assassins creed with a space ninja from tekken :D your chokes would bring all the boys to the yard. cos your chokes are better than theirs, you can tap them and you wont charge. tenth planet ninjas tapping fools at large. ;) (btw i copyright this lyrics and any following songs) :D
