Rob, your trolling is out of control. You may need to seek professional help.
Holy shit, this thread is still going on!!! Train whatever da fuck u want. Like Gi? Train Gi. Like No Gi? Train No Gi. Like both? Train both. What's with all that talk about Gi douchbags? There are douchbags in both systems. There are great guys in both systems. I have met a few 10P douchbags and one of my best friends trains Gi mostly. And I also met some dumbass Gi players and awesome No Gi guys. I love Marcelo, took a lot from his techniques and added to my personal game, teach his style to my students, but his opinion on grips and training is only one opinion out of a million. What matters is what works for u, and only u. If u think training Gi will help your MMA grappling, train Gi. Do I think so? No. Does Eddie think so? No. But those are our opinions only. And they matter only to us. U can do whatever da fuck makes u happy in this life. The End.
I gave this some thought last night. 10 years ago when jits really started to become more popular, if you wanted to grapple for no gi, jiu jitsu, or MMA you went to the same place, so you sure as shit were gonna put on a gi! There really wasn't high level guys in just no gi JJ. With that being said any fighter asks me for advice, I tell them not to put a gi on for at least the entire camp prefight. I feel there is a BJJ generation gap because I wouldn't train no gi under someone who never put a gi on, but I think we are really starting to see a separation in BJJ styles where guys are getting better at each specific style. BJJ for MMA coaches, for jits tournaments, and no gi styles.
He has actually put a gi on....
Oh I get what you're saying, well in short yes. I am good friends with the 10p affiliate in my city. (shout out to Mario Lopez) we bounce ideas of each other all the time! Other than Eddie's dudes I'm hard pressed to think of many guys who've done enough homework to consider themselves no gi experts who haven't put a gi on.
Perfect, that's what I thought. I was putting your thoughts together and thinking "ok, on one hand he's saying that the styles are diverging to solve different problems but on the other hand he's saying that he wouldn't take lessons straight from the top of one branch that is devoted specifically to solving a specific problem. That doesn't make sense."
But it also doesn't make sense to go train under a self-proclaimed no-gi black belt who has never trained in the gi, has no lineage, no claims to legit BJJ technique....
...not if you want to win tournaments or MMA matches anyway...
Exactly.
Has Chris Brennan started in the gi?
I believe Brennan made it to blue in the Gi, but not 100% sure
Eh. It does discredit most wins if done in the old men brackets. I'm old enough to compete in it. I would never that because i see it as taking the easy route...dodging the competition. (Why you ducking vitor bro?). Most top level competitors are about 28-40. It's not basketball, where the younger, the better. It's a sport that experience and wisdom are just as valuable as strength and speed. So, with that said.. I believe if they even use age division, they should make it mandatory. If you are 35years old and there's a 35-50 age bracket, you must do it. Or they could have an over 18 Adult division and only use age brackets for youth. Allowing guys to choose their age division or even compete in both has ruined the masters and executive divisions..
Personal opinion guys, don't no old guys get pissed at me. Remember.. I'm old too.
I got on a rant..Back to the original topic. The damn gi is dead.. Eddie is right.
I'll take very modest issue with that.
It's a very strange argument to say "See Marcelo? He trains 50% gi 50% no-gi and he uses a lot of no-gi techniques in the gi. Therefore the gi is dead."
Wait, didn't you just say he did 50% gi? Haven't we all heard Eddie say that collar chokes are easily possible when a dude is wearing a t-shirt?
Here's my suspicion (speaking as a total noob who is trying to piece together a strategy for training).
The gi makes passing very hard. Practicing in the gi will give you an opportunity to have very strong passing technique because nothing less will work.
For no-gi, passing is easier. Controlling dudes is hard. You have to invent new ways of controlling dudes if you don't have handles. So your control game has to adjust. The pace can be faster, so you have to be able to flow better to an ever changing situation.
If you practice both as Marcelo does, if you can have a unified game as Marcelo tries to have (where perhaps 80% of your technique is going to work in either situation), aren't you going to have a pretty freaking strong game? Isn't it going to translate well to self-defense?
So yeah, GI ONLY, GI4L, that's dead.
But who wouldn't want to see a 10th planet person rocking the pan ams?
Suffice it to say that you won't see me getting really good at spider guard anytime soon. ;)
Lol! I'm so glad to see my troll comment worked. You guys got serious.. Lol! Do I need to post a pic of myself in the gi? Hehe. Sorry guys. ;)
Lets talk about the old man age bracket? This gi and nogi stuff is not for the 10th Planet forums. Take that shit to sherdog..
I don't know what did more to reinforce the title of this thread: how boring the gi matches were last night or how awesome Eddie's match was!
Man, how do all those MMA fighters keep their gi's looking so new?
