So I heard its a misconception that heel hooks come from sambo and that they are illegal in sambo is this correct?
Heel hooks do come from Sambo, that is not a misconception. There are 3 "flavors" (Areas of study) in the Martial Art of Sambo. Sport Sambo, Combat Sambo and Military Sambo, all are Sambo. Heel hooks are only illegal in Sport Sambo competition, but legal in Combat Sambo (MMA w/ a Kurtka/Gi), they are trained in all Sambo gyms. Its similar to Judo having throws in the art, however they are illegal in sport competition.
I thought it sounded strange here is the source http://youtu.be/gCcMzNQMx-k
Starts around 40:35 he makes the point about heal hooks around 49 min mark.
I started a thread a while back talking about finding the origin of the heel-hook. I knew it was hard to find and I've heard so many different stories of where I came from. Lots of roads lead to the origin being catch wrestling.
Very cool seminar you have planned zog. Too bad I'm in Texas and not NY.
Vlad is a good friend of mine, however I disagree with his take on heel hooks the are 100% legal in Combat Sambo every event I fought in they were legal, even the international events. I don't disagree with the influence of catch on Sambo. Sambo is an amalgamation of many arts, Judo being the core along with several styles of wrestling. Sambo has many influences and each school focuses on different components of Sambo, some excel at throwing , some arm locks, some leg locks, some focus more on sports Sambo, some Combat Sambo and others military Sambo. Its all up to the instructor/school.
Cool I always find the history and origins of martial arts interesting but it can get really confusing.
my friend and i love the old videos we have from him, wish i could attend.
