Do you guys mix it up or typically start in the same position?
I usually start like I'm in butterfly guard and scoot into the position unless it's some one is good at flattening me out and passing or if it's just someone way bigger than me.

Sometimes, I'll get up to my feet and start passing the guard or secure butterfly guard and if I can't then go into 1/4 or straight to 1/2 guard if I can and start working sweeps.
I nearly always chase lockdown to start, depending on how well i do, i'll go to full or butterfly.
I engage grab an under hook on the right, block his opposite side knee with my foot and turn the corner, landing in side mount or half guard depending on the lvl of the opponent.
If this was not a JJ message board, the topic of this thread would be questionable.
if instructing to "start from knees" I sit and butt scoot for the most part. If someone is playing the same game or is beast i'll start from one knee and one foot posted.
I usually don't put up much resistance at first. I feel the more I'm in a bad spot and work to a good one the better. The thought has passed my mind though that I need to work on not letting someone pass my open guard.
most of the time I lockdown or pyramid, unless they give me the top position. Then i usually let them have half guard and I work on the darce or passing to side.
I could be anywhere from buttscoot, to battle stance, inverted, or standing. When starting from the knees i feel no obligation to stay there. If he wants top, I work bottom, and vice versa. No need to wrestle for top from the knees. Just stand if you wanna work takedowns, cause it doesnt transfer well to comp. Now if its in transition, such as whip up to dog fight, different story.
