Lockdown
Hi,
After getting Eddie's Jiu Jitsu Unleashed I tried out the half-guard Lockdown in class today on an unsuspecting training partner - it's pretty sweet. When I straightened my legs he yelled in pain and tapped immediately - is this normal? It's a calf slicer, but the Jiu Jitsu Unleashed book doesn't mention it can tap people out?
Does it work like this for everybody, or is it just me? I got him to do it to me and it didn't hurt, so do I have extra-sharp shin bones or something?
Thanks for the help in advance guys

When you slap the lockdown onto someone that has never had it done to them it totally fucks with them. That's a good thing that your lockdown is that tight, it should be. As far as a submission it's just pain and your training partners will get used to it.

LOL love it mate. I have a similar story.
I secured lockdown on some poor unsuspecting soul the other day, done a slight whip up and kinda twisted (similar to the beginning of the electric chair sweep) and when he put his arm out i slipped on an arm triangle. Couldn't believe i actually got the tap from there. My squeeze must be getting a little better. :-)

I have played lockdown for a few months now and only one guy has tapped from it so I guess it just depends on the person.
-
Depends on the person doing it and the person receiving it, but it is a submission hold. Chances are you won't catch the same person twice, or tap a guy with decent pain tolerance.

Thanks guys.
Dylan - tried it on 2 guys, tapped 'em both (first guy about 4 times - I couldn't believe how easy it was, so kept doing it just to check) - but got told by the second who we asked to help out with an escape for it 'this is an illegal move' so decided to stop! We were rolling Gi so anything to the legs is illegal under comp rules. Fair enough.
I think you're right - tougher MMA guys could just grin 'n' bear it while working on an escape and revenge :) I got short stocky legs and sharp shin bones. No good for triangles, but not bad for a calf crush!
But also - Hey, who says you can't learn from a book? :)

The lockdown is a legal move. It's not a submission it's just a different way of playing half guard. If you have skinny legs though (like me), i.e., not much muscle covering the shins then it can be really uncomfortable for your opponent. They maybe just worried about what you were doing because they didn't know it as it does put pressure on the leg and tapped before finding out if it would do damage to them.

Martin - I think he was saying the position is legal as a half guard, but applying it as a 'calf slice' is not. Looking at some rules on web -

For a calf slice you have to be brown belt or black.

Aaahh sorry. I missed that bit in the post. Yeah calf slicers aren't legal till brown. They were made illegal for a while at all levels I believe but have just been allowed again recently, prob with the introduction of the new IBJFF rules. I wouldn't disqualify someone for using the lockdown but if they tapped I don't know what would happen. Can anyone clear this up?
Kind of like if someone neck cranks the ref would tell them to stop it and continue but if the other person tapped then it would be a disqualification.

Nothing screams newb more than tapping to lockdown. No offense.
