i try to get perpendicular before he is able to stand and pull out. it still happens sometimes with a good guy who is bigger and stronger than me.
and i have been going to the monoplata from here A LOT. like.... A LOT.
Great post. I've had that happen to me in tournaments too. I'd love to know how to stop them from standing up.
2 things I do to slow this down,
1. is to put my figure 4d leg under his chin. I think this is called the Hazelett sometimes, that stops him from rolling, but you can also switch it to pressure above the head on the back of the neck and alternate,
2. is controlling the inside leg so he cant step over or stand up.
If he stands, you can always try the good ole' star sweep.

Cobrinha also has a back take counter when the guy starts to posture up in his 7 volume DVD series. Can't find a link for that at the moment.
If you go for the FM ankle lock preemtively, the guy is going to have trouble standing up.
It also seems like if you transitioned to the drowning jiu immediately, it would nullify any standing.
There is a perfect video in an MMA fight that shows exactly this situation. I'm hoping another MMA fan can help me to help Bobby. It's a Japanese fighter who got his opponent into the jiu claw. His opponent stood up, but could not for the life of him shake off his opponent. The guy doing the jiu claw type position ended up having both an omoplata and a RNC to finish the fight. It was beautiful. The fight wasn't in a ring, not a cage. There's a video on youtube for it, but I can't for the life of me remember the specific Japanese fighter's name.
You mean Masakazu Iminari?
