Eddie Bravo/10th Planet's Response to Neil Melanson and "the duck out"

Sorry if this has been broached before, but I was wondering what Eddie's thoughts were on Neil Melanson and his guard system that he gears specifically towards MMA? He seem like an extremely good coach who has some great points about the guard in mixed martial arts. Most interestingly though, he says that his problem with RG/mission control is that its vulnerable to something he calls "the duck out".
On the flip side of things, he spends a lot of time going over a position really similar to what Eddie called "london" and says is extremely vulnerable to passing and is no longer in the system.

Also at the end of the video he shows a modified version of RG where he uses his opposite hand to pull mission control. He says he prefers this version as it frees up the nearside hand to attack for subs.

Theres a part one to the video that doesn't really address any of this stuff but is still very interesting. What do you guys think?

He has interesting concepts. But his opinion on RG looks uninformed. Before you can accurately dispute something, you have to understand it well enough to explain it. From what he showed, he doesn't really know the rubber guard. And his london imitation looks like it would work better with the legs closed. The one he showed looks too easy to pass. I mean, it looks like I can pass it with just my legs. But just because I disagree with him doesn't mean ALL of it is bunk. Like I said, he had good concepts.

Its a very effective grip that Gene LeBell teaches, however great for grappling, its very difficult to use wearing MMA gloves. I used it for years before switching to the gable grip.

Which makes sense due to Neil's Gokor/Karo lineage.

Some of the stuff in that video actually seemed useful. I'm going to Vegas at some point this summer, I'll make sure to drop by his school.

Ah, I never saw it being used before, thanks for clarification.

I've learned that Shawn Williams guard is a viable option for people who do not have the leg dexterity to play the Rubber Guard. That being said, if someone ducks out, double bag it.

I use the way he breaks his opppnent down in the beginning from time to time. I thought I was the only one who did that. I sit up and clinch first. Fall back and extend hard on the legs.. The opppnent will usually post hard with his hands. That when the opportunity to take the overhook to free chill dog presents itself

I think it's interesting stuff. I use that Shawn Williams style guard a lot. I'd be interested to hear some of the brown and black belts take on Melanson's ideas.

He has a lot of similar ideas to Eddie, actually. He just expresses them through a different guard system. Eddie has some great ideas, but they aren't the only ideas.

Melanson teaches grappling for MMA. His guard system is based on the clinch, which is logical. I'd like to watch footage of some of his better guard players in action.

You can tell he has a scientific approach to the way he works the guard. He didnt really trash the system like a lot of the "beat the rubber guard" videos out there. Not everybody is gonna like the rubber guard. Ive had guys duck out for sure but double bagging and leg curls will minimalize the chances of that happening.

wish we could have gotten some more comments from high level 10P guys like Brandon said.
