I use the berimbolo, but only when I have the gi on. In order to make it work you really need the belt to grab onto to make your opponent sit back. I haven't figured out how to make it work no-gi yet.
It's hard to hit no gi but can be hit, you have to get the perfect reaction while it's happening though
Here is the best vid on it I have found on YouTube

i use it no gi...thats the de la riva guard. its great for any guard player. it works really well if you're a boot scooter n the other guy tries to scoot towards you as well.
Thx for this but it might not fit in the system but who am I to say it might be perfect under someone elses control it looks like a reverse spiral guard maybe you can use both as a combo to set this up
If youre playing spiral gaurd you should be working it with the de la riva IMO, makes both guards more effective in combination
I use it a LOT in no-gi, you just have to be more precise. It's actually how I got my first no-gi tourney win, and the whole fight lasted about 20 seconds. I have two tips for you when doing it no-gi.
First: when you berimbolo roll to take the back, obviously there is no belt to grab once you stick in your butterflies. So control the ankles by using counter pressure: pull with your hands, push with the butterflies. This is also how you bring him to the ground to take his back.
Second: Try De La Riva X-Guard. Basically, extend your DLR hook all the way through the legs, weaving it behind the DLR leg and then in front of the far leg. Then stick the other leg in as a butterfly hook, just as you would for x-guard. You end up in a really tight DLR x-guard that is coming at the opponent from the side. Sweeps from here are easy and all over the place. You can use wrist control and the DLR to dump them forward, berimbolo to the back, or even elevate and helicopter sweep or back flip sweep to end up on top. Plus you can transition into a million other guard from there, or use sitting guard sweeps, or hit a single.
I use it for gi mostly..if your doing it no gi you need wrist control on same side as ur doing the de la riva on.. so one hand on foot and one hand on wrist same side ...when you go around to spin to thier backside you have to use the other foot as a butterfly hook on the back of thier knee ...
I like to roll no gi, no glasses.
I hope it's effective no-gi, it looks awesome. Keep working it guys and post any videos of this working in competition :-)
I've seen Glover, Braulio, Rafa Mendes use the berimbolo in no-gi. Not many people though. It's not as hard to do if you just want the sweep, but if you want the back it's very hard no gi. Doable though.
Also the berimbolo is not a guard. It's just a sweep/back attack from the de la riva guard.
Even if it's hard to take the back nogi, as long as its a legit nogi sweep it will for sure be injected into the system. De la riva and spiral has been in the system for about a solid year now thanks to Jason Eisner, in fact I've been teaching it ALOT since May 2011, most of my hq dogs are very well trained in DLR and Spiral, very important material to master :)
De La Riva, berimbolo, spiral... These guards are nasty. I've been learning a lot from a good number of playas in the system as well as outside of the system. They fit nicely, because if a person comes into your guard, you bust your rubber guard... If they shy away from your guard, you attack them with all the nastiness. Mix in your leg locks and you are über-nasty.
The main thing I dont like about this guard is that youre dangling your foot in front of your opponent and anyone with a good toe hold will make you pay
Rafael Mendes brought that issue when asked about that at a seminar. he said to simply be mindful of your feet and that if someone is trying to toe hold you during a berimbolo then they are not defending the sweep, and he will come up on top in a leg drag/Sauo Paulo pass position, causing them to lose their proper angle to finish. He said if it's done in one motion it should be hard to get toe holded.
hahahha! The "pull the pants off contest" was hilarious! But around 4 min is just sneaky!
Yeah, like Mike said, if a guy goes hard for the foot they make it easier to get the sweep or even take the back, it's hard to catch that footlock during the transition, you just have to be confident in your footlock defense
Berimbolo is a legit sweep, I'll go for it if the situation presents itself. As of right now I get the sweep more than I get the back.
Technical question if you don't mind? In no-gi, where do you grab with your right hand in place of the belt/jacket/sleeve, assuming you have a left DLR hook inserted? I'm alternating between hooking my fingers in the hip line and grabbing the wrist, which I've seen Jeff Glover use to great success. I'm doing a couple hours private with the Mendes Bros no-gi in August, and I'll get their opinion on it and be sure to report it back here
Can any of you find the bermibolo done in competition nogi?
I think an underrated move from the De La Riva no gi is the back take when the guy is standing you strecth out the inserted leg, swing the other shin/ankle behind the knee and kick out the legs for the back take, I have the most success with that move
I had to reach a bit for this. According to the people that use it the most like Mendes Bros, Cobrinha, Caio Terra, and Samuel Braga, the "Beijo Dragao/Kiss of the Dragon" (reverse berimbolo) from Spiral Guard/reverse De La Riva guard, is a much better option for no-gi, and is much more common.

Cobrinha did one at the last ADCC but it's not on youtube or vimeo. Rafa Mendes had one coming to the leg drag position at last ADCC against Robson and against Cobrinha. I think I saw one from Gianni Grippo at the No Gi Worlds at brown. I'll try to find it. There were a lot from random people at the No Gi Worlds last time. Hope these help some. Oddly the Mendes bros often teach the bermbolo no-gi to show the principles of it better.
On mginaction.com Marcelo shuts down all the berimbolo and de la riva/spiral stuff with such simple moves, love how he doesn't over think stuff
