Torn MCL and Meniscus...suggestions

Well guys...just in time for Eddie's seminar and Gracie tournament in El Paso I've fucked my knee proper. Looks like I'm out of Gracie Worlds too. But that just comes with the sport, right? Anyway, I'm wondering about how to keep up my cardio and skills during the potential 6 month surgery recovery time. Is that even possible? I still plan on attending practice and all the tournaments just to increase my fight HQ...but I know my flexibility is going to be shot for a while. I dont know how long it will be before I can get back into some sort of training. Anybody have experience here? Can I still train upper body as long as its not standing or putting pressure on the leg? Any suggestions for cardio? I imagine a pool is a possibility in a few weeks.

Dunno about advice really mate but keep your chin up ! I used to get injured all the fucking time ! My mate once said about me "you've got the heart of a god but the body of a mortal" lol

the best advice is sleep rest watch movies learn how to play guitar cook knit ANYTHING but working out you gotta take the time to let that knee heal completely or else you'll be spending alot more time off! I know it really licks but thems the breaks :(

MCL and meniscus won't have you down as long as you think. I've had 4 knee surgeries and I can tell you the hardest thing is learning to give it adequate rest. You can however train around the injury. You're gonna need a partner you trust and that understands jiu jitsu enough to relax and let you operate.

Primarily though you'll be doing solo drills and movements. Hip elevations, one leg bridges, etc...

Being a physical therapist I strongly suggest you see a physical therapist because this is our expertise. The pool is a good idea. The arm bike might be an option if your gym has one. Cycling can usually be done in a couple of weeks but it depends on the severity of your injuries and the type of surgery. And as long as you don't put pressure on your leg definitely train your upper body. You can develop some killer grip strength for example.

some solid advice there. I'm for sure going to let it heal completely. Not going to let my ego ruin my fight career just because I want to come back a few weeks early. I've got a stationary rope climb at my gym. May see how far I can climb. Wont have to worry about the legs and I can build up that grip. I'm with my boys at 10p Santa Fe right now, but considering going back to NC for the surgery. Anybody know what flying is like a couple days after knee surgery?

I tore my MCL on May 4th during practice. After having an MRI the following week it was confirmed it's a Grade 2 MCL tear (Doc also believes I dislocated/relocated my knee cap). This too was two week prior to Eddie's seminar in Spokane (which I sat on the slidelines in a brace like a dumbass). I also will be missing Sub League on June 9th in Portland. Since mine was not a complete tear I will not be having surgery. Physical Therapy and time. The first week pretty much sucked ass. I lost almost all range of motion. I now have a double hinged brace that I wear and I started physical therapy this week. After just two times to the therapist (which I had doubts about at first) I have seen massive improvement with my range of motion. I can put all my weight on my knee (as long as it completely centered over my foot). Basically my therapist has me doing exercise to strengthen the surrounding muscle and ligaments, using alot of bands. As for cardio exercise I am clear to do anything as long as its controlled and not contact, and of course I stop if it hurts (i.e. NO JIU JITSU!). Stationary bike and elliptical have been the safest so far, I will start running hopefully next week.

Have you had an MRI to confirm it is torn and how bad?

Take the time to get informed on all your options, talk to your doctor, tell him/her you are active and want to fix the issue and get back to sports ASAP. Do your PT right and make sure to be up on your nutrition and above all be patient.

GEt well soon man and do what I do. Watch as much JJ as you can. Watching is still learning. Hell still go to your training and watch...it still helps you.

for sure man. Gonna be an interesting little while. Even though I cant walk on it, I'm hoping that the MRI comes back positive enough that I can just work with physical therapy. The doc thinks surgery still. I just want whats best for my fight career. I'm still planning on attending practices after this week. Still going to the Renarco seminar, still going to El Paso, still going to worlds. Not gonna stop just because of a little pain.

Awww man that sucks! Just when we finally got rolling with each other too!! Not sure what better advice I can give but if I can do anything to help out let me know!

thanks Kermit. I'm still going to be supporting 10p Santa Fe full time. Still gonna try and do some sort of drills or something sometime soon. Maybe a month or so. I'm sure I'll be good for something. As far as helping me out....I'm gonna put a bounty out on Jose-mar Palhares' head. Kidding...let him know I'm ok.

As for the rest of my 10p brothers, thanks for all the support. Means a lot. Anybody remember what episode of JRE he was talking about the meniscus replacement? The thing he said works so well?

Thanks for all of the support guys. Just left the doctor and got some good news. Steel brace for 6 more weeks and no contact until August. That means no Gracie El Paso or Gracie Worlds still...but it beats the hell out of being out 6 months. Just gotta work hard during my physical therapy. I'll be back on the mats tearing em up soon enough.

When it's ready make friends with an exercise bike.
In the mean time any exercise that elevates your heart rate will help maintain your cardio, so lifting weights at a higher pace with lighter load (arms, upper body obviously) is an option.

Good Kyle that's awesome man, I've been in a similar boat here in phx. Got a partial tear in my acl, got a follow up on the 20th to see what the next step is. In the meen time I've been strengthing my left leg a lot! I was gonna make a video of a technique john taught us for strength and cardio so everyone that's down to one leg could rep it hard.. I was gonna make a little competition out of it even just so we can keep our competitive drives up! ;) ill try and do it tonight and post it. Really though man that's good to hear, gives me a little bit of hope that maybe ill get a speedy recovery too!
