how to deal with people who dont like rubber guard.

today i went to a jiu jitsu school today for the first time to check out school that can teach me new things and roll with different people but today i got a reality check. soon as i enter the school the teacher greet me and tells me do i want to learn the jiu jitsu so i told him yes but i am more intrested in mma jiu jitsu / wrestling. than he ask me what kind of training i have done so far i told him i did only did self taught rubber guard before i even finish the sentance he tells me rubber guard jiu jitsu is low level or form of jiu jitsu. right than i was little annoyed but what could i do. than he tells me i need to learn jiu jitsu with the gi to be a better at jiu jitsu. right there i told him i love jiu jitsu but in mma its different. i really want to practice no gi format than he tells me they have no gi class but its for higher level guys. now i am really confused what ever than he ask me some question did i ever roll with other people i told him yea when i go to my local gym there is couple of guys who pratice jiu jitsu all different levels i used to roll with random mma guys and i learned from different people we all shared different techqiue. every body helped each other improve and i never even went to proper jiu jitsu school but i do have some understanding. the teacher tells me that all that training is not proper and i dont know jiu jitsu unless i do jiu jitsu with gi. i was embrassed i got out of that gym but only thing i could remember is all the times i spend on this site and youtube videos of eddie bravo giving free lessons and i remeber one of eddie video how he talks about practice practice and practice. i realise i dont need no fancy gym or belt to tell me i know jiu jitsu. i am thankful i found this site.

Dealing with any ignorant person about any topic is frustrating. #1...there's no sense in arguing. As long as you know the truth. If your goals or interest is in more no-gi/mma look for a school with a lot of no-gi classes and a school that has a open mind.

Coaches like that hide behind there Traditional Jitz because there they wont take the time took outside there system. Best avoid these guys if there system doesn't evolve it will go stagnant and lose it's effectiveness in competition

You don't need him to tell you that you know jiu jitsu, but if all you know is self taught rubber guard, then you do need a couple ass whippings to let you know you don't know jiu jitsu. Train somewhere. That may not be the place for you. But there are plenty of open minded gi schools who also let beginners join on no gi days. If you've been on these boards, it shouldn't surprise you that someone doesn't like rubber guard. But you're gonna get the same advice: Train anyway.

Just don't pay any attention to it. Get a foundation in a grappling art, and then add what works best for you, as your understanding of the game grows.

Exactly. Just find a school thats a bit less narrow minded. You dont need that school. Plus youre gonna find a ton of people talking shit on the system. You just have to let if slide off your back and dont put much thought into it

Just because someone is wrong doesn't mean that you have to argue with them, or that you can't learn from them. I train in the gi, but I use RG all the time. The point is that overall, he is a black belt, and you are a white belt. Ignore what you disagree with, or bring it up on here to figure out how to use other methods. But mainly, learn his traditional style of bjj because it will help your entire game ... even your RG. Then, you can cross train with 10th planet, or experiment with things like RG during open mats. And when you get a purple belt or so, you can move to another gym to get exactly what you want (now that you know specifically what you want).

Also, check out Marcelo's place, it's amazing.

I personally would taze him in the parking lot, but that's just me.

i dont like the gi but all this people they just want you to wear the gi i really dont get it. i never grabed the gi to do arm bar triangle, near naked choke, leg locks. with rubber guard i notice that people who know the rubber guard see the fight more clearly they understand the transtion and what summisson is coming sometimes we even anticipate the counter. tradtional gi jiu jitsu they tend to do the bread and butter type of summission. in rubber guard each move follows steps to prevent counters and high failing rates. there is big difference when you put under hook than grabing sleeves. once in awhile i go into different gym i just roll with people for fun you will be amazed how many people dont know how to do under hooks and over hook i learn the hooks form the rubber guard. rubber guard helps me understand how to avoid the ground and pound. when the punches are coming its hard to avoid them without rubber guard.

yes i am self taught i may not know jiu jitsu but i have rolled with every different style of ground game. in the end you will never know who will tap you out.

Totally agree. Also, think the need to dump on anyone who does anything different (gi or no gi, variations on subs or positions) is probably the most annoying aspect of the jiu-jitsu community. Esp considering that one of foundations of jiu-jitsu and judo is live sparring, so if something doesn't work, it'll get weeded out... no need to hate. That stuff drives me nuts. Find a path that works for you, dude, and enjoy the experience.

Coming from almost ten years of MMA related training, and coming into jiujitsu, this whole, "gi no gi, hubbah guarch vs gripping sleeves guarch.. Well.. It seems reeeaally retarded! :D *Hahahah!*
It's every bit as stupid as the olde Taekwon-do vs Karate thing.

It reminds me of the "kicking in MMA" speech that Eddie just had. Back in the day I got yelled at in training for kicking high. But I knew it worked, and my sparring partners didn't shoot when I kicked, they were too busy defending. And did kicking work in MMA? Yes it did. If everyone should follow the mainstream there would be no new techniques, it's stupid. I think rubber guard is a bit like kicking. It takes a lot of flexibility, and you have to get how it works. Not everyone will get it. Thatch my whitebelt opinion on this matter.
