Got destroyed today!

Hello, everyone

I haven't been to a class in around six months. Usually I just roll with some friends of mine in the wrestling room at school. My friends are a good 50 pounds heavier than me, but I always manage to tap them out just because have a little experience over them. We always work on rubber guard with videos from youtube and stuff and I like to think I have gotten pretty good with it. However, I am in Colorado visiting a sister of mine so I decided to try out a local Gracie Combatiives dojo they had here. I got annihilated! They blew through my rubber guard, won all the scrambles, and proceeded to tell me that 10p sucks dick. I wasn't offended because I'm not exactly good anyway, but how did they shut me down so easily? Do you think it's just because I haven't rolled against actual experienced partners lately? Can anyone give me some tips for rubber guard?

They've probably had a tonne more mat time than you. Prepare to get destroyed many more times regardless what guard type you choose.

Yep, happened to me when i first went back to training, and at a new and much bigger gym 6 weeks ago after a couple months off. I got fucking destroyed, absolutely minced. However ever since i have been there every day there has been bjj on, and doing strength on days when not doing bjj, and not everyone else has, and slowly but surely i am catching up with the rest of the guys now. It's just about putting the time in on the mats and accepting your ego will be crushed every single session. Its good for us. Good luck. :-)

Good bjj guys won't just hand you their posture on a silver platter especially since more people have been doing rubber guard. At my new gym I can rarely play rubber guard because everybody is so good at retaining posture, killing hip movement, and shrugging out of my New York setup before I can establish good control. It happens though, you'll find a guy with a busted Tozi pass, or somebody who just doesn't know that you can exploit their underhook... then it's rubber guard city.

A lot of the 10p guys are really good at baiting people into giving up posture or putting a hand on the mat. Usually a shitty flower sweep or hip bump attempt can be enough to force someone to post a hand on the ground giving up the overhook. It sounds like you have a good pool of talent to work with, so just hone your game and develop it. Don't worry about what they say, I'm a leg lock snatching, rubber guard playing kook and people tend to be cool to me as long as I don't walk into their gym espousing all of my white belt wisdom.

This and expect to be told any system besides the in house system sucks. Some bjj schools will kick you out just for training at another gym

way,way,way more to 10th planet system than just rubber guard! You say they blew thru your rubber guard. Did they also blow thru you regular closed guard? That is a Gracie basic! Does that mean Gracie's suck if they can blow thru your closed guard too? Usually if someone crushes my rubber guard I still have closed guard or Meat hook! How is your Meat hook game? Sometimes, if I feel them stuff my leg and start to pass and I can't get to meat hook fast enough I'm right in position to start my lockdown game! Which is were I really want to be anyway. How is your lockdown half game? One position is not exclusive to all the rest of the system.

Was thinking about it couple days ago and would make sense for me to head up towards the mid/end of the kids school summer holidays maybe. My mother in law is one of the heads of department at the local college, so i know she will be off work then and able to help look after my kids for a couple hours each day while i am away and my wife is working at her part time job. They don't know it yet, but that is my plan LOL. Obviously if you got stuff going on then we can rearrange for another time. :-)

Reps reps reps!!! When your not in the mat focus your strength training so it correlates with 10thpjj. Write down exactly what happens when ur gaurd is passed. Consistency!!

I had a guy stand up thinking he could bypass rubber gaurd on me. I went spiral and took his back from between his legs.

Its always hard to come back to the gym after a long break. I had the same situation just a little over a year ago. I was out of the gym for 6 month & when I went back even guys I used to tap destroyed me. I lost alot of my endurance & flexibility in my layoff. For you, yes training with people who have never really trained jiu-jitsu is different.

I remember my early days of playing rubber guard. My game wasn't very polished at the time, but not many people played rubber guard back then. This allowed me to have more success with it early on. Today it is well known and the traps and such are better defended in general. Continue to work on your rubber guard game. However, I would stress focusing on your half guard game first. Eddie lays it out first in his book for a reason. Most people will give you half guard b4 giving you full guard. Also, you will find a lot of times you can transition from half to full guard with your partner already broken down. This will allow you to start you rubber guard game a step a head. Its not going to be easy. You will need to rep and roll often, but if you focus on your half as much as your full guard, it will be hard to shut you down early on.

You're gonna get pounded on in the beginning of your jiu jitsu journey. It's just part of the process. I'm going on 7 years now and I still get whipped regularly.

Take your lumps and enjoy the education.

Learning the 10th Planet system can be very difficult at times. In some ways it is easier and in some ways I think it can be harder. But the important part is that you commit to the philosophy underneath the techniques. That's what truly sets it apart and will allow you to explore and develop your own game.

your rubberguard probably isint at "A" level, you practice it against wrestlers and learned ir from youtube. Drill drill drill and you can control them

Dude, I got smoked at HQ/Burbank. My cardio sucked, I got submitted a few times, pulled only a few sweeps, etc. At the end I am twice as motivated. Next time I'm in HQ/Burbank I won't run out of steam or I ain't going. All the stuff that worked against my game I took back home and ran it by my instructor. Prepare to learn from your mistakes/opponent's advantages.
That said we are all white belts for a reason. What do you expect!? Of course they will blow though your guard. I've been working my half guard/lockdown day-in day-out for a while now with all sorts of belted practitioners and my half guard still sucks. You are rolling occasionally with less experience guys. Do not think your rubber guard is all that good. It will get better with time on the mat. It would help, if you ask the Gracie guys to slow roll with you. You can see how they are breaking your guard and make adjustments. It will also give you time to improve you dexterity and execution. When you roll do not expect to win. The goal is to learn and improve.
As for those who say "10p sucks", tell them to ask Royler! :cool:

i personally love getting smashed in class it makes me just want to figure out my mistakes and try to not let it happen again lol

fact is, if you are not getting smashed at least 75% of the time you are training, you are likely training at the wrong place/at a very low level. Stick with it. It is so rewarding. :-)

Got smashed, but only because the purple belt was the only one there. It was an incredible learning experience, and I have one more day visiting here in Colorado. I can't wait to go back! Gracie Combatives is really different from 10th planet. I love 10th Planets unorthodox style, and all the options you have, but you have to give the practicality of GC props too.

I love getting smashed! I always feel like I've gained and learned the most after I've had my ass handed to me.

u can pick on a white belt all day long that knows very little and u can toy with but only the white belt is learning i love getting my ass handed to me by upper rank guys its then that i get to learn

I think that has something to do with it. Train with guys better than you and they will make you better. They will show you the holes you need to fill. They will force you to do your techniques properly. They will improve your defense. And you might pick up a move or two while rolling. Tips for rubber guard? More practice. Learn from an actual instructor.
