Can someone please explain how Vera is so close to a title shot? He hasn't beat a real top 10 opponent since 2006. Is there something I missed. Please discuss.
On the flip side could this just be an easy match to give Rua a shot? Does anyone think Vera stands a chance?

Honestly I don't think either deserves the shot. But if you look at the division who really deserves the shot? Jones has pretty well cleaned the division of any viable contender. But out of anybody I guess, depending on how he looks in this fight, Rua is probably the top contender. Hopefully he changes his game plan against jones this time though.Quote:

Jones has essentially broken the LHW division. All the viable guys have lost to Jones badly and/or lost to each other along the way to get to Jones. Its so competitive underneath Jones that its hard to choose a real winner. Once Jones leaves for HW things will become more orderly.
It's funny that a 4 guys fighting for the title fight have been beat by jones. I wouldn't mind seeing Vera have a chance but I don't think that'll happen. He pretty much got cut after the thiago humiliation and i never knew he faught after that and I'm a Vera fan. He def doesnt deserve a shot but the whole mixup with shogun denying fights i guess they just tossed him in there.
It has turned into another Anderson Silva situation. Jones has defeated everyone of note in the LHW division just like Silva. Now there is literally no one new for him to fight. It will take some time for a new crop of contenders to develop into viable threats to Jones' title. Until then, his fallen opponents get to line up for yet another beat down.
Vera is highlight reel fodder for Shogun. They're basically feeding him to Shogun so that Shogun looks amazing and they can use the highlight to promote the rematch with Jones. But the fans cried BS, so now Machida/Bader is in the mix...which is actually still the same situation. That's why Dana said whoever's more exciting gets the rematch. Both fights are highlight reel builders. Vera knows this. Bader is in denial.
If either Vera or Bader wins, it is what it is. They beat top guys. If they want to get slaughtered by Jones, so be it.

Agreed. TBH i want to see Jon Jones vs Chieck Kongo at HW. Jones walks around at 225-230 and Kongo weighed in for his last fight at 230 so i think that would be a good matchup and a great test for Jones. :-)
The 4 that are fighting this weekend do not stand a chance against Jones. 2nd fights will likely be less competitive than the first. Jones has more 'fight intelligence' than those guys IMO. All great fighters, but not on Jones level. :-)

I would be ok with Gustaffson as well. Normally Id like to see guys who have competed against some more established names. (Thiago was good for Gustaffson, but other than that.. I dont really consider Matt Hamill or Vladimir a great litmus test after seeing how Jones handled them.) I agree that Gerard could probably use some more names as well before a title shot is really deserved.. But its hard to beat big names when you arent in the UFC. Lets face it.. IF you want to go against the best.. 90% of them are going to be there. Maybe a possible match between Gustaffson and Gerard for a title shot? I would definitely be ok with that. But on the other hand.. I may rather see them just let them both fight Jones in attempts to buy some time before another freak can make his way into the UFC and give bones a challenge.
Good points. I still give the edge to Gus just because he's looked like his talent is improving while it looks like Gegard's is fading. I still think Gegard is above average, but it seems like he's not pushing himself to improve. It's a damn shame. I'd like to see him in the UFC. He should at least turn in some flashy work in strikeforce to get Zuffa looking his direction. Getting a decision against a mid tier fighter isn't going to do much for his climb up the ladder.
But yeah. I'd rather Jones fight someone new than rematch so soon. Even though I don't think Gegard deserves it, I'd rather see him fight than one of these rematches.
I would never count Vera out this is MMA crazier shit has happened. If his shit is together he has a shot to win this fight and the opportunity to get beat up by Jones. Either way I'm watching someone get fucked up.
Time for Anderson to move up? 2 belts have never been held at the same time.

That would definitely cement him as the greatest fighter of all time period if he could pull that off even though Dana and Joe both have already said he is. He may be at the tail end of his career though and he may not want to risk blemishing his perfect record. How many fights does Anderson have left in him? Jones has like 20 or 30 while Anderson have like 4 or 5 imo.
isnt it funny that everyone including dana is saying who ever wins most impressivly will get a shot at jones when he still has to fight hendo. so technically whoever wins gets a shot at whoever wins jones vs hendo. i find it funny everyone is writing hendo off
