Do any of you no gi teachers use belt stripes? I know some gi instructors use this system kind of a way to let someone know they are still progressing in the system.

I bought my own, every few months I add another stripe. So far no one has noticed.

Shhhhhh
i c wt u d1d ter
once a week i make my guys wear a full sleeve rash guard with their color "belt"
on the right arm, where their watch would be, i progress them with stripes there. -(via sharpie, full rings around the wrist)
works out great, some guys love "belt" night, some (newbies) dont. but its a good way to keep tabs on who is who, and how they train.
i always find out that everyone tries harder on those nights when going against someone who out-ranks them. even if they roll with the same guy every other night, they still seem to put a lil more into it when they see the shirt/stripes...
must be a subconsious/mental thing
Al Bundy says it best, why the stripes aren't needed...

I Lol'd.
I don't think stripes are terrible, I personally wouldnt need them. Some traditionalist see it as the americanizing of jiu jitsu, in effect making it like TKD(not tryn to hate on legit TKD) Some people need to see their progression written out on a belt for them, if it keeps them coming in your instructors door, more power to it. Everyone can say they're in it for the art and the love and what ever other honorable thing they want to claim. But with out revenue coming in the door, your instructor has to close it.
I find it interesting though, the statement made about guys getting a bit more agressive/trying harder when ranks are shown. Some could account that to people not having there ego's in check.. but I think thats great. People should want to tap that brown belt out in class, even if they are a blue belt. Thats the kind of progression I would want to see in myself. Does it make that person an automatic brown belt? Hell no, but it sure show's they arnt a fish flopping around on the floor anymore.
Good points. I know a white belt that's been rolling for years(12).. He's legit.. He just never stuck around long enough to get promoted by any one instructor. But he is black belt, high brown level. I think it would have been nice for him to get some belts along the way though.
