The only one i dont agree with is Diaz.
It seemed his reasoning had a lot to do with their personality....? Antonio McKee though is spot on.
The fact the writer of that list thinks Jorge Gugel was ever, in any way, a top BJJ guy should pretty much make the whole article null and void. Typical Internet know it all, who doesn't seem to really understand what in hell he talking about (Kimbo for instance...no one who mattered rated him at all, ever).
I'm probably going to get a lot of shit! But number 1 should have been the man who started it all...the legend Royce Gracie!!! He won because nobody knew BJJ.
He still is a legend!
Fedor, Franklin, and Diaz... SHOULD NOT BE ON THAT LIST!
So because he used a system of martial arts to beat much bigger, more athletic men in no holds barred combat...proving this system beyond shadow of doubt regarding its effectiveness (and I would add he is the reason this board exists, and why you have any juijitsu interest at all) you say he is....overrated? I think you may not know what that word means....
Yes, the art of BJJ won over all other arts and better athletes. But once everyone started to learn BJJ (which is awesome) the evolution of MMA started and the Gracies were left behind.
Was and would Royce be a great fighter against fighters who knew BJJ (Brown or Blackbelt level) in MMA? I would say no!
The title of the thread or article is over rated fighters NOT arts.
This does not take away from any of his accomplishments. Royce is still the number one pioneer of BJJ and is a Living Legend.
Bob's your uncle!
Besides Big Nog and at the time Crocop who did Fedor beat that was anywhere near his level? He crushed a whole lot of cans and fooled everybody into thinking he was invincible. On top of that M1 kinda hurt his legacy not getting him into the UFC
What the hell have this guy been smoking? they are all at the top of the system, they are gunslingers that made it to the very top. By that definition alone, none of them are sub-par fighters or overrated. the internet; Everyone's got a soap box.. hahaha! :D
And Nick Diaz?? Are you kidding me?? The only drawbacks he's got are mad weed cravings and a will of his own..! Maaan.. How about Takada? Or Daijiro Matsui? Poor Daijiro never won a fight, (well one as I can remember), but he was still put in there, again and again. Now that's overrated. Maaan..jees.. I just don't agree with that list.
Fedor was knocking out the best heavyweights in pride when pride HAD the best heavyweights in the world... The UFC's roster at the time had arvloski and sylvia knocking each other out every other weekend while Japan had the cream of the crop. He loses 3 in a row at the end of his 30 fight unbeaten streak and MMA "fans" come out and say he was always overrated? With that logic look how Michael Jordan did on the Magic and Wayne Gretzky on the rangers... Looks like they were overrated all along. The top 2 gave to be Kimbo Slice then Brock Lesnar... Nick Diaz number 2? How is Nick Diaz overrated at all if anything he underrated.. Same goes to Rich Franklin ... Seems like a hugely biased article to fighters the writer dislikes
Maybe he shold post his actual real name next to the article :/
So just looking at Pride..youre telling me Mark Hunt, Mark Coleman (twice), Wagner da Conceicao Martins, Tsuyoshi Kosaka, Naoya Ogawa, Kevin Randleman, Yuji Nagata and Kazuyuki Fujita were the best heavyweights around? After Pride was done and up to his 3 losses he beats up Matt Lindland, Hong Man Choi, Tim Sylvia, Andrei Arlovksi and Brett Rogers...Come on!
Ill admit Rogers had a nice amount of hype around him but we can see how that worked out
Saying Franklin's overrated because of his coach? That makes absolutely no sense.
Hard to say Shields is overrated when he keeps winning. Boring? Sure. Not overrated. You don't beat Hendo from being overrated.
Fedor is not overrated. People know he's not the best anymore. But at the time, he was the best. Sure the people they handed him weren't always the best, but considering who the top fighters were at that time, Fedor demolished them. Convincingly. He took out past and future HW UFC champs in Nog and Tim Sylvia. That's what the HW division looked like at the time. He was the best at one time. But the sport advanced and he couldn't keep up. It's unfair to say he's overrated. Maybe in the last 2-3 years. But he did establish his legend for a reason.
Nick Diaz isn't overrated either.
Other than that, I agree.
Mark hunt is knocking on the door for a UFC title shot how many years later? And the hong man choi fight was just a freak show but none the less a difficult challenge even though he wasn't the most talented. I'll admit his opponents werent the best after pride but what if Anderson silva decided to not sign with the UFC after pride/cagerage and was knocking people out in other organizations people would be calling him the best based on looking at his skill and how he performs and no doubt Dana and others would be saying silva was overrated and sucked cause he wasn't fighin the best ... yet it's the same fighter isn't it? Ironically if Silva or GSP lose 3 in a row late in their career before retirement people wi be shifting on them and their accomplishments no doubt.. Look at Tito Ortiz ... Longest reigning LHW champion back in his prime in his day and "fans" made a laughing joke about him later in his career for not winning fights. People forget quick in this sport
Shitting on them* sorry for grammatical errors typing on iPhones suck haha
Where is Phil Baroni?
Gegard Mousasi?
Really?
I wouldn't say his ground game sucks, certainly not with 10 subs under his belt in mma.
The "draw" with Jardine was a joke, he won that fight handily.
Even with the illegal blow, he was 10-8 in every round.
Saying he would crumble to anyone who was top ten is more of an assumption than anything.
At least with some of the other people on the list he can point to fights where they were brought in and favored as the winner but lost.
Diaz lost a really weird fight though, he wasn't destroyed as most people like to think, and as far as Mayhem goes, he was NEVER hyped as a fighter.
I don't think anyone ever though Mayhem had a real shot at anything other than top 20 status.
Which, he holds well.
He could take out 90% of fighters in his division and make it look easy, but look at his past bouts, he gets into the big leagues and wilts.
It's heart breaking as a Mayhem fan, but it was expected.
Fedor I totally agree with though, and it's further solidified by all the people who will jump down your throat screaming about how much of an uneducated moron you are for suggesting Fedor might not be the greatest fighter in the history of ever no matter how long mma goes on for.
Even if he was Jesus Christ incarnate, he still couldn't live up to the hype his fans put out for him.
Agree with the entire thing except for Fedor and Diaz
Take off Franklin, Fedor, Diaz, I am not even going to try to explain why they should not be on that list. If you don't get it, then you do not understand why Babe Ruth was great although he could have been destroyed by some of today's pitchers. Add Baroni, Trigg and I am going to take alot of shit for this but.... Rickson. Don't tell him I said that though. Shields needs to be higher on the list right in front of Kimbo.
Honestly, right now, i would put Rampage Jackson up there as overrated. The guy refuses to evolve as a mixed martial artist, and he only has 1 way of winning a fight. And when he loses because of HIS lack of evolution, he blames EVERYONE else but himself.
At this point, i personally think the whole 205 division 'has his number'. :-)
I think Rich Franklin is pretty overrated.. Who has he really beat?
I think there's a difference between currently overrated and always overrated. Like Fedor. For a while he was being overrated because he was wasting years beating UFC washouts and cans and retirees. But when he was the king of Pride, he was not overrated. At that time Pride had the best HW's and Fedor was king.
When you say most overrated of ALL time, Franklin can't be there. Franklin beat all the top guys back when he was the champ. Same with Fedor. Right now he's only taking big name fights like once every millennia so he shouldn't rank high. But to think he was always overrated is a stretch.
Who has Franklin beaten lately? Besides an old Wandy and an old Liddell? Doesn't sound impressive now, but he has beaten tough guys. Evan Tanner. Yushin Okami. Matt Hammil. IMO he beat Henderson. He got robbed in that fight. Franklin was a former champ for a reason. He was not over rated.
I think he overrates himself though. He honestly wants another shot at the title. But he won't face tough up and comers. Dude, if you wanna prove that you're still in the mix, you gotta prove that you can beat these guys. Not just older guys on the edge of retirement.
Totally agree, that's like a no brainer.
Sadly this list sucks.
Everyone thought Rampage was amazing when he revenged his losses to an aging Wanderlai, and then came in and caught Chuck Liddel being his reckless hands down self.
People often mistake the sport evolving for their favorite fighter merely being past his prime.
The Jones fight was just so weird to watch....Rampage knew he was losing the striking battle, but he refused to try anything else because he was scared to go to the ground with Jones.
His arms were shot and he clearly wasn't going to pull out a knockout.
He just kind of accepted that he was going to lose a decision...till he got subbed of course.
I absolutely HATE seeing fights like that, especially when the person is coasting on a decision in their favor.
I didn't even bother reading the list because it's pointless. At least all of these men had the balls to put it all on the line in front of millions. None of these guys are overrated. They are all killers who could murder 99% of the world's population in a one on one fight. Maybe if Anderson Silva made the list then I would pay attention.
This
I think we can all agree for lack of talent vs amount of hype Kimbo tops the list everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. He was exciting to watch but his ground game was just 0. If he got into MMA earlier in his career in his mid 20's he could have been a force
FFS they had a special entrance of him on the ultimate fighter then lost his first fight
I really can't take this list seriously if fedor is on it. When fedor was at his peak, GSP was asked who the greatest fighter in the world was. He said fedor. Many other fighters in the UFC have said the same thing.
I'm not gonna dispute who was the greatest in the world, when the best fighters around say it's fedor. They simply are the highest authorities on the subject.
And nick diaz is not overrated. If anything he is underrated, and always will be.
BJ, GSP, Ariel Helwani, A. Silva, A lot of reporters and great fights were asked whos the best... in an ellie setback interview with A.Silva if he moved up to HW who would win he humbly said Fedor. Pretty much everyone but Dana cause fedor wouldnt sign and was considered the best. When he lost to Werdum Dana openely laughed saying he sucked all along, but contines to say "everyone loses now and then in this sport." he lost 3 in a row at the end of his career and now most newish MMA fans are agreeing and smashing his legacy. I like the Babe Ruth comment. The sport evolved too much and he couldn't keep up not to mention his body was catching up him from a lot of his wars.
No Cro Cop on this list im lost.....also would hurt to say Sean Sherk too
I honestly don't think I've watched more than one UFC fight since around UFC 5 or 6 or something like that.
