I need you guys connection

Hey guys :)
As some of you may know I got a gnarly staph infection on my leg :/
I've been taking basic precautions:
- showering before training
- showering after training (10-15min after - time to get home)
- train with clean/ washed gear
- clip nails/ toenails
- hand washing

I've also briefed my guys on the regular about personal hygiene but it seems like it isn't enough...

I'm looking at getting in touch with companies that manufacture soap/ wipes/ whatever for body care so I can have them on site to really push better hygiene practices...

Unfortunately I have contacted such companies in the past and never got any replies from them, I'm guessing due to being based in NZ... I won't name and shame but yeah it was a bit of a let down that's why I hope posting it on a public forum I'll get replies :)

My gym is running on a tight budget but I'd be more than happy to discuss options. Getting staph is a huge eye opener and scared/ scares the living fuck out of me.

If someone owns or knows someone that owns one of those companies and can help me to directly contact them that would be super awesome.

Kevin is correct. You need bacteria on your skin to fight staph.

Also don't use anti bacterial soap. It kills ur immune system

I've heard this before also.

From what I have read, Staph is pretty much everywhere, even on a "healthy" person. So keeping your immune system in top shape is a plus!!

You are correct staph does live happily on your skin and is dormant most of the time. The doctor told me about it and said that during certain seasons it gets active and would look for any way you give it to get into your system.

The not showering before seems slightly gross since I work all day lol but it kinda make sense lol

Remember guys that my main priority is to get in touch with those body care companies :P

In the Shower

1. Do not lather directly under the flow of water. Allow soap to remain on skin momentarily.
2. Use a loofah (mesh sponge) but not too vigorously. Vigorous scrubbing will cause small abrasions to the surface of the skin allowing penetration by the sources of infection.
3. Wash the back of the neck and hairline thoroughly. The Collar Tie is responsible for the over abundance of skin infections found here. Our hands touch everything in the wrestling room including the mats, our bodies, our opponent’s body and anything else you might pick up. Everything collected by our hands is transferred to the back of our opponent’s neck. Wash this area twice.
4. Wear shower shoes. Athlete’s foot is caused by the same Tinea (fungus) that causes ringworm.
5. Do not share towels and wash towels after each use.
6. Dry off thoroughly.
7. Wear loose fitting clothes to allow your skin to breathe.

In the Gym

We also need to protect ourselves on the mats. We all know that the mats are a battlefield. They are a place we go to compete or to train and prepare for competition. Part of this preparation and training should include proper hygiene. Here are a few tips that can help in the room.

1. Carry your shoes to practice. When leaving the room for water or bathroom breaks wipe your shoes before entering back into the room. Shoes can be wiped on a towel dampened with solution from your bucket of mat cleaner. Wet the towel in the bucket before cleaning the mats.
2. Fighters who train barefoot should never walk on the floor without proper foot coverings.
3. The foot coverings should always be removed before entering the mats or ring.
4. Change your shirt often during practice. Once a shirt becomes soaked in sweat it becomes permeable. Your sweat becomes a vehicle for infections to pass through your clothing and onto your skin.
5. Wear a thick cotton t-shirt or clothing made of synthetic fibers that "wick" the sweat away from the body, helping to keep the skin dry.
6. When sitting on the wall do not play with the mats. Wrestlers often lean with their backs against the wall with their hands at their sides touching the edges of the mats along the wall. Take a look at what is in between the wall and the edge of the mat. When was the last time this area was cleaned and when was the last time your wall mats were cleaned?
7. Do not train with partners who have skin infections and do not train if you, yourself are infected.
8. Cover and treat any trauma to the skin including, cuts, scrapes, and new tattoos. New tattoos are the product of the skin being pierced literally thousands of times. Always apply an antibiotic ointment or healing salve before covering for added protection. Of course this is going to fall off during training and will have to be recovered.
9. When leaving the room always, always, always, consider yourself contaminated because you are. Shower immediately and properly. If a shower is not available use a body wipe to hold you over until you can shower.

Don't Forget The Equipment. Be sure to use Defense Sanitizer on the following items.

Having a clean room is also a necessity but a clean room is more then just mopping the mats. There are many more surfaces that we come in contact with other than floor mats. Consider cleaning the following:

1. Wall mats.
2. Takedown dummies. (Remove the clothing and launder it and wipe down vinyl surfaces.)
3. Throw dummies.
4. Crash pads or throw mats.
5. Fighters, wipe down your bags, bag gloves and your hands after wearing bag gloves.
6. Fungi like to live in damp and dark places. Make your room light and dry. A dehumidifier can pull moisture out of your room.
7. Battling skin infections is more then just topical. Diet can play a huge role in how healthy our skin is and healthy skin is harder to infect. Here are a few diet and skin care tips:
8. Keep your blood sugars under control. Aim for blood sugars of 80 mg/dl to 120 mg/dl before meals, and 100 mg/dl to 140 mg/dl at bedtime.
9. Keep your Hemoglobin A1c at 7% or less (a 3 month average blood sugar test). This prevents dry skin.
10. Drink eight glasses of water a day. Of course when cutting weight we all would love to have eight glasses of water however we just cannot do this. Applying lotion to the skin will help keep it moist.
11. Eat whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and small amounts of lean protein rather then sugary or fat laden foods. Keep a balanced diet even when cutting back.
12. Rest to increase your body’s resistance. You will catch infections easier if you are worn down.
13. Once infected, proper care is required to rid you of the infection and promote healing.
14. Do not touch the infection. Wash your hands immediately if you do touch an infection.
15. Consult your trainer or physician with all possible infections. The sooner you treat an infection the less established it would be. The infection will be easier to clear up, creating less damage to the skin.
16. Use medicine completely and as recommended. The infection may still be present even though it may not be visible.
17. Use the proper medication for each infection. Using the wrong medicine my make the infection worse. An example of this is using cortisone creams on fugal infections, which help fungus grow.
18. Many of us train for hours a day for competition, some are coaches and some just want to stay in shape. Whatever reason we have to be on the mat or in the ring, we all share the common threat of skin infections. Preventing, treating and curing skin infections can be made easier with a little education on the topic.

I have used a lot of soaps and Defense always smells great and feels good after a shower. When I have been hit with worm in the past Defense was my go to. Nathans foot cleaning station is something I use at the gym all the time. They also had a couple at HQ.

The infection is under control been a grueling 5 days! Avoided being hospitalized so far!
I have to go back today to get it reassessed.

I had an IV line for 3 days in my arm and was getting blasted with massive injections of antibiotics! (10 mins to push the content of the syringe)
My problem for not healing was that I had plugs of puss that were keeping me sick. First time they drained my leg I felt a million times better and got even better the following day when they took out the remaining chunks out of my leg :)

My wounds have been treated with Manuka Honey, so now bees are my friends lol

To all of you guys mentioning having good diet I'd say it might help lol but that's about it lol

I've been on some multi vitamins and 10 billion good bacterias probiotics for ages! And my diet is super clean. Got a medical check up just a month ago and the doctor was amazed by my blood results lol saying that all my levels were crazy healthy... And look what happened lol

The only thing that I would change is definitely the not showering before training and making sure my gym offers on site body wipes and I'm gonna be more onto it with the new guys lecturing them about personal hygiene.

What I got out of it is that no matter how good your personal hygiene/ diet is you ain't safe!

It's all about educating people. Cheri and Guy have been really cool sending me info and samples on hygiene and prevention :) time for me to drill that into my guys.

Since my incident the gym has been blasted from floor to ceiling and the source of my infection has been confirmed and been taken care of :)

Now I'm working on changing my guys hygiene practices for the better and I won't think twice about kicking people out if they don't want to comply with our future gym rules concerning hygiene :)

Let me recommend apple cider vinagar and tea tree oil as direct topicals when the first signs of skin infection come, tea tree oil kills most of this stuff, and the living cultures in apple cider vinegar eats and does wonders to almost any of the nasties involved in combat sports(including soaking your gym clothes/rashsguards to get that funk smell that wont seem to go away out for good)

I am a big fan of all the big three brands of combat soaps, Super Body Care, Defense Soap, and Fight Soap. They all vary in their product lines and variance of ingredients and concentrations thereof (For example, some use alcohol, some don't, those that do do so because alcohol kills alot of bad stuff, those that don't because alcohol kills alot of the good stuff on your skin that helps to fight infection as well).

I would honestly recommend to anyone to over time, try all three instead of just sticking with whatever one they try first or is advocated to them by their peers. Fight soap has the widest variety of actual styles of soap, as well as constant limited editions and custom editions, which for those that like a specific smell or function from their soap, they probably have something to match. I use defense soap shower gel for my showering, but I have not tried super body cares showering bars or gels yet to give an honest comparison. Also worth noting, every time I've ordered a defense soap product, its arrived either the day after placing the order or one day following that, so if your in a rush, they don't slack. I also strongly endorse Defense's foot cleaning station -- Every martial arts gym needs one of these PERIOD. The liquid solution for the stations seems to go a little quicker than is ideal for its cost, but these are an ASSET to gym hygiene.

I use both defense and Super Body Cares wipes, but honestly like the Super Body Care ones much better. The defense ones do not carry the same pleasant and refreshing aromas as the super body care, and those extra ingredients leave your skin feeling much more refreshed. The defense wipes are about twice as big as the super body care ones per wipe, and while I find one defense wipe enough for my whole body, it seems 2-3 super body care wipes are necessary, although they come in greater quantity per package. Super body care also makes a spray, which I am very fond of.

Truth is Guy and I are friends! :P We both enjoy catching up here and there, and we also jest in competition! :) We are both harnessing the power of plant oils. So it's pretty hard to sling mud at something you both believe in. It's real simple to compare our product lines, one is apples, one is oranges. Some of you might prefer apples, some of you might prefer oranges, and most of you like both. :) For other soap companies, hmm, their company bio's consist of "guys who train jiu jitsu and started a soap company". I'm a certified Aromatherapist and spent hundreds of hours in a lab blending, learning essential oil safety, and creating specific treatments for conditions. Super Body Care and Defense Soap stand the test of time, testimonials, and test results. With a Starbucks experience, you expect the same mocha latte at any Starbucks location. You should also expect a consistent product you can depend on for the hazardous environments of combat sports. If you're gonna pay the money to ensure your skin's health, I think it's pretty important to go with a formula you know works and doesn't deviate. Not every essential oil is created equally. Some are not so strong in certain departments, and some are really aggressive (toxic) if misused so it's pretty important to have a background in it for consumer safety and effectiveness. Hi John. Thanks for the thread. Staph is a very serious issue as well as MRSA.
I'm guessing you aren't rolling on the mats in your current state? Just checking.

Basic precautions we do:
1) sweep mats then mop every inch when done, after each session.
2) clip your nails
3) wrap your wounds
-if you have wounds or scratches, the staph etc will enter your body through that area.
4) change shorts and shirt often and after every session
5) hopefully you are showering after every session
-the goal is to change your clothes inmediately, and shower no more than an hour after practice.
-you can't force people to, but you can avoid rolling with them and letting them and everyone know why

I have a list somewhere.. I'll post when I get free time.

No I haven't put a foot on the mat since and still got 2 more weeks off!

As mentioned before WE DO CLEAN our mats everyday and people's habits were pretty good.
They cut their nails
Change clothes if they come from somewhere else etc etc

I found out what happened and I'm so glad to be the only one who caught it!
Someone had a staph infection and didn't say a thing for months! He used to stop taking his antibiotics each time he felt better so he had it for a while!!!

We dodged a pretty solid bullet and could have been far more worse and got everybody sick!

Anyway, since then I've gave away samples to my guys so they can try it and there's now a canister of body wipes on our counter free for everyone to use :)
I'm hoping to have a bunch of guys ordering their own stuff as I'm not a baller and won't be able to pay for it all the time lol

Now the hygiene at the gym got bumped up to another level :)

I'm freely talking about it because it's like a taboo subject and got told to keep it on the DL several times but to me it's retarded!

The only reason why that guy kept on training is because nobody told him the seriousness of a staph infection! Not even his doctor!!!! Which is mind blowing

Ive had several guys that train at my gym that also train at other gyms and they all were amazed that I caught something due to the fact we always keep our mats on a daily basis!
You'd be surprised by the lack of hygiene some gyms have! My old club used to never mop the mats! Once a month was luxury!!!

I've always been on a crusade against germs and thought I was prepared for it but now that I've got the help of Cheri from Super Body Care and Guy from Defense Soap ( they both sent me tons of samples) I'm gonna be able to educate my guys and get them responsible/ accountable on a personal level.
I think that's where I went wrong but now those guys will know probably more about staph and skin infection than a doctor hahahaha

One of the doctors that I saw told me that staph infections are super common amongst rugby players in NZ. I saw him the week before and barely remembered me, so I told him "do you see many guys with staph?!?! "
An he said that he's treating 5 more patients with staph!

Once again nobody talks about that kind of shit and it's been driving me crazy!
That world of silence and shame like you're a filthy cunt in the first place to catch it!

Sorry to ruin it for you but I'm probably too clean for my own good!
I shower a minimum of 2 times a day usually 3 (1 quick shower before training which is apparently not smart at all LOL)
Wash my hands a million times a day etc etc etc.
So no people you can be as clean as you can be you might still catch something!

That being said was when I was just using regular soap but I'm super confident with the wipes/ soaps that are specially designed for us grapplers I won't catch anything again!

PS: probiotics won't prevent you from catching it! I've been on 10 billion good bacterias and didn't help me LOL

Man John.. That's good it wasn't worse than that. I think hiding the issue is the worst thing someone can do. It puts everyone at risk. And it's one of the most serious injuries in grappling.
I think if someone has something in question on their skin, they should be shown the door and recommended they see the docs, for everyone's sake.
When someone has a bandage on their skin, have em reveal what theyre hiding.
I recommend using safeguard(antibacterial) soap. It works wonders and is cheaper than the defense soap type soaps.
If you have the loot to get that defense soap/ks/ stuff, then do that. Otherwise, safeguard soap and body wipes for the way home is safe enough.
