Elevation Training Masks
Just wondering if anyone, or you know of anyone, who is or has used one. Sean Sherk's looks and sounds good but....do they work? This is how I look at any move or technique....does it work. If it does, great..use it. If it doesn't then get rid of it. Anyone's thoughts?
-
I'd be interested in trying one.
-
I think you need to use it on a regular basis for long term affects. Just like training at high altitude, if your only training there for a week and then go home you loose the benefits.
-
There are certainly cheaper ways of fucking oneself up in order to improve cardio.

Have no idea 10th Planet Santa Fe is @ 7k+ feet above sea level lol

Pretty darn good explanation of how and why elevation training works (but not neccesarily for mma) and why the training mask doesn't improve cardio/conditioning for mma training by Eric Wong... worth reading through if you are a coach, personal trainer or just interested in the science.

I have heard over and over: It does not simulate altitude, but it DOES strengthen your lungs and the surrounding performance. It will not effect your blood oxygen levels like it claims, but it WILL improve your cardio and breathing for combat sports. I have friends who have them, including friends who have since the version 1 came a year or so back, and they all say it has improved their breath control noticeably.
ALSO: I have consistently heard claims that this product improves handling asthma greatly, I have heard first hand and read second hand that the strengthening of muscles involves makes breathing during asthma attacks much easier and manageable. Something to consider as opposed to steroidal inhalants for strengthening(I dont know much about asthma but just sharing the possiblity)...

I'm thinking, it can't hurt to try one..

if you can't afford one use painters mask;) obviously not as good but works till you get one

Snorkel and scuba mask ala wandy
-
Cool way to have a stroke

Our team uses them frequently with our warm ups, intensifies shrimping and useful in a lot of areas. Def. not a wonder tool but it will improve the cardio.

the whole premiss is a little off to me. your muscles need oxygen to function. the more oxygen they get, the better they do. so lets take some away. this is supposed to make you better how? i get how it feels like it is working you harder. but to be completely honest from a scientific stand point it makes little to no sense. any physicians or physicals trainers out there that could shed some light on this?

I have to complete underwater swim tests for work...i used to use a device called a Powerbreathe for training...they are pretty good
-
I watched a guy at my gym use this once. He did rounds on the mits. After he took it off and his face was a purple/blue. Looked like a non healthy lack of oxygen. but im no doctor.

lol along with depriving yourself of oxygen while you train don't drink water either, i heard it makes you tougher

BJJ Blackbelt and Medical Hillary Williams student called them out on their claims of mimicking elevation training, stating restricting air inflow was not the same as altitude with a lesser percentage of oxygen in the air mixture. Training Mask facebook page was pretty ugly towards her in response. Then other M.D.s that Hillary knew chimed in and had her back.
Don't believe the advertising.

Err, Medical student that should read. Williams is training to become a doctor.
