I always read about "drilling", we drill this, drill that, drilling for warm ups or after class or people don't like drilling, drill on your own time, etc...
What do you consider drilling? How much drilling doing you do? Resistance level? Slow or fast?
Let's talk drilling!
I read the Mendes brothers drill like crazy, very technical about it also, they do speed drills also

I may be wrong, but I believe the majority of BJJ schools don't really "drill"
You see the standard conditioning warm up, teach a couple techniques and then roll format a lot in the BJJ world

From what I gather there are situational drills and movement drills. In situational drills, you run through only the material worked on in class, which focuses on a specific series/situation, at 40%-60% resistance. Movement drills are where you repeat a specific BJJ related movement to build muscle memory and conditioning.
I'm used to doing situational drills. I can't speak from a variety of experience, but I will say that situational drills after about 40-50 minutes of reps is a great way to build muslce memory and familiarity with the moves. I remember when I finally started using ONLY the stuff I've learned in class, it was nuts how it just came natural like I'd been doing it forever.
According to Jordan Schultz, you must drill a technique 10,000 times before you have a basic mastery over it.

I like drilling a movement so many times then when i live roll i only work that move personally i don't like drilling without being live cause if you have a partner letting you get the move by not fully resiting or trying to fully counter you wont know for matches...but thats just my opinion. I have been drilling the lockdown for like a year through the paths and its made a huge difference in my half guard game I'm currently awaitin the new dvd to come out so i can build my side control game. :)

Drilling moves at about 50-60% resistance is HUGE. But also live drills are just as important. Dead zones, single day, swamp walking etc...
Drilling just means practice, so practice, practice, practice :)

I like to spend 45mins drilling and 15 minutes rolling if we have an hour for open gym. By drilling I mean positional stuff. I look at my game objectively and decide what my weakest position is. I look for what functionaly works for me as a Jui Jitsu Student then drill it as much as I can, the way my class is structured is alot different then when im teaching my friends. my instructor shows 2 techs and then we work on them back and fourth for like 15 reps on both sides (strong side and weak side)with your partner after that we just roll. I personally start with a position drill a sweep and then a sub or two from that position, move back into the sweep and work from the new position doing the same thing till i make it back to my starting position.
I feel that the day you learn a technique and rep it 15 times is not the day you drill a technique. Example. June 2012 you were taught how execute an Upa and roll mount escape and put in 15 reps that day with a partner. July 2012 you use the Upa and roll sucessfully several times with various opponents during roll time. August 2012 your instructor does not teach any new techniques that day and asks that you perform Upa and rolls with several opponents for 30 minutes straight at 40% then 15 minutes at 80% and he gives you no further motivations. Do you roll your eyes and say to yourself " I know this already and I am good at it", then proceed to perform in 3-4 times in 45 minutes (all at 100%)with maybe 2 partners and mostly just have to drink, go to the bathroom, talk. Are you a good student and try to perform the task as instructed but find it difficult to have a commited partner. I find most students(at our school and the many others I have visited) tend to be the former rather than the later. Unless the istructor has the energy and drive to stay on peoples asses and say "come on , lets keep going" over and over.
To really get a task, you need to perform it over and over with good realistic resistance, but low enough that you are able to perform it technically perfect each and every time, so you mind/body can remember the moves. If you do not drill as instructed, chances are you will be able to continue to use it during gym roll time, but will not be able to pull it off when the real pressure is on. ie. real fight after getting slammed to the ground, competition match, MMA fight after taking 3 fists to the face. Sorry, just my personal pet peve rant.

You can have drills/flow drills where you just go over the same move/moves over and over again with little or no resistance. I find this is good to learn the move in the first place.
Than there are drills where you practice the same concept over and over again, like I'm passing your guard you have to pimp arm and recover or scoop my leg and recover, I don't usually do these at full resistance. I do these to break bad habits out of people.
I also have drills where you get stuck in one position and one person starts with a dominant control and has to try as hard as they can to stay there and one person has to escape. Kind of like the dead zone mts episode. I do this almost like positional sparing
Muscle memory is this thin stuff that coats your nerves that allows them to fire stronger signals quicker. It forms every single time you move your body and at a set rate. So if you drill a move slow and fluidly enough you will be able to do it fast and fluidly but if you drill it fast and sloppy because you want to get your reps in you will actually be hurting more than helping because you are developing the wrong muscle memory.
