I am looking for a good mouthguard that is not too expensive, but that allows you to breath as well. Any suggestions?
i just got a cheap one from walmart for like a dollar or something. once i molded it, it fit perfect of course and for a dollar, you can't really beat it.
I really loved my shock doctor breathable mouth guard but it's multi layer structure seems to cause splitting. I bought a newer cheaper one but I've been too lazy to mold it.
Walmart Mouthguard for $1 does just fine. I bought a couple and leave em in a plastic bag in my gym bag so I always have one handy.
as long as your not doing any type of striking like muay thai ect then a cheap walmart one should work, but if you do striking you should get a good one, broken teeth hurt and cost lots of $$$ ;)
I make mouthguards, but I am in Red Deer Alberta, Canada. I would give 10th planet guys a good deal on a proform Custom mouthguards. You really should'nt use anything but a custom guard as the boil and bite ones are quite a mouthfull and you are'nt able to perform to your fullest when you got a mouth full of spit.
I take upper and lower impressions and a bite registration, Then I mount the models on a machine that simulates the jaw. I vacuum form the upper model with the proform guard, then I use a torch to heat the guard and close the lower teeth into it making an index for your bite. This will allow you to have a balance bite, adequate breathing and shock absorbtion.
When you get punched in the jaw, it is the lateral deviation that compresses a nerve that tells your body that you don't know what your doing so it shuts your body down. Having a bite index will help prevent or at least lessen the deviation hopefully saving the fighter from being knocked out.
Also having a good bite registration can unlock your abilities, flexibiity and balance. If you have the bucks you can get an under armour mouth guard for about $500 or a PPM mouthguard like wanderlei silva for about $2000. The guards I make are not as expensive, but are based on the same Ideas.
From me about $100 but can't speak for other dental offices as they charge what they want. If you shop around you might find a dental office that makes them for around $50. They usually take upper impressions and you have to work your bite in over time.
are you you a dentist??

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think for now I am going to go with the Shock Doctor Ultra STC. I will let you know how it works for me this next week in class.
BAMF mouth guards! Come with 15k worth of dental insurance as well and fully customizable, pretty much if you can drawl it or explain it they can make it.
correct me if im wrong but i believe that if you go to academysports or sportsauthority, really anyone who sells the TAPOUT mouth guards, They are about $20.00, and the cool part i believe is that they promise the best protection. and will ensure/ cover your dental bills for up to i think $30,000 if you have any oral injury while using their guard.
are you you a dentist??
Which nerve is this?
I am a Denturist and it is the temporal mandibular nerve.
Do you know any good online links on the temporal mandibular nerve? My searches only found a few anecdotes from boxers and martial artists explaining how knockouts from the mandibular nerve occur and Wikipedia just says where and what it is. Really interesting stuff though.
Are mouth guards really needed? I've been doing judo for a little over three years now and I have never felt the need for it. I always thought it was just a striking thing.

I want to buy a good mouthguard, and I already had a mold made by my dentist. I don't really care how it looks, because I'll probably just get a simple solid color. However, I have asthma, so it's hard enough for me to control my breathing without a mouthguard. I want to find the one with the best airflow so that you can breath well while fighting. Any advise? Jawzz/FightDentist vs. Bite Defense? I saw that Bite Defense says they sponsor a bunch of top TPJJ guys including Eddie, so they have to be pretty solid, right?
That guy already had dentures and never took them out before the fight. Even Dan Henderson takes his dentures out. Its common sense. Besides, thats a hell of a custom made mouthguard when youre teeth get knocked out by a knee and they stay in the guard. Even after they took out the guard they couldnt get the teeth out because they were so firmly in place. What do you think wouldve happened if he was wearing a shock doctor? He wouldve swallowed them
Dan Henderson wears dentures?? Funny shit..
I was in class and we were talking about this, except the guy was a long time wrestler. I said it was funny that people never use them in wrestling but we both thought it was a good idea. He said he was getting a mouth guard that night, but before he left, he bumped heads with another dude doing takedowns and he broke his front tooth.
A buddy of mine was choked out with an RNC in class. When he woke up his front teeth were chipped. I got a mouth guard after that.
Just took a knee to the chin while rolling and bit both sides of my tongue. It's really becoming time I buy one, I am now talking like a retard.
