Important lesson on safe training under national health care

The owner of my gym/friend was training with a student from another gym on there own time and during a outside leg trip they were going to fall onto weights so they twisted weird fell to the side instead of back and tore something in his knee.

The doctor thinks from how bad it is that he tore his ACL, MCL and meniscus all at once. Martin has been in brace for 2 weeks now.

Now because it's canada he has to wait 2 months for an MRI.

After the MRI if he needs surgery it will most likely be another 2 months.

If he waits the 4 months it will start to heal incorrectly.

What sucks is that despite the fact he needs it for his job they will do nothing to help rush the process unless workers compensation is involved.

I had one student in the past that waited 2 months for an MRI and then the surgeon called them to schedule an appointment 9 months later. It took 9 months to analysis the MRI.

It's brutal, much easier just to be safe and not go for throws around objects you don't want to hit.

This is one of the reasons why some people are afraid of a universal public health care for everyone...I shudder to think what I would do if I tore a knee liagment and had to wait 9 months for surgery.

On the original note yeah I'm always cautious too when practicing near walls, solid objects, mirrors etc....it sucks because sometimes my partner will keep driving forward even though I've lost options but I wont risk hurting them and won't pull off a sweep or takedown that might potentially send them into a chair or mirror. He can pay and get it done. At least you can in some provinces. It's garbage to have to do it, but it is at least an option

Good news for your buddy, at least he has the option of getting treatment without going into severe debt...or he can pay out of pocket. At least he has that choice. Plus, if it doesn't heal right, they'll do the surgery. At least he has that option.

In the US, you're paying no matter what. Can't afford it! Welcome to debtsville. Can? Lucky you. I had a bad knee sprain that I doctored myself because I couldn't afford to go to a doctor. Didn't heal right. I really can't do much about it but live with it. That's life.


Btw, I'm opposed to 100% universal healthcare. I'm PRO affordable healthcare and a universal option for low income people. I mean it sucks that lazy bums get medicaid but laborers don't if they can't afford it. That should change. Limit medical treatment for welfare recipients. Incentivize them to want to be part of the workforce. Buuuut I'm ranting.

my x-wife tore her MCL, PCL, ACL and meniscus all in one fall from a simple jits takedown. the surgery took over a month to get done and even with health care she ended up owing tons of $ out of the 120k or so they charged for the whole thing. now luckily she was low income so the hospital wrote of a good chunk. but much of the PT wasn't covered and other things the doc wanted had to come out of pocket.

in most countries that have universal health care they do have the option to pay a private practice to get faster care as was mentioned above. i'd rather know that low income folks will get treated no matter what and that rich folk can pay extra if they like. i can't tell you how many times i have skipped treating injuries because even at my middle class level my health care plan sucks so bad i can't afford an MRI.

You have no idea how much worse it could be. My father is recovering from shoulder surgery right now. He has needed the surgery for over 5 years! He also has a hernia and had to choose which to get fixed and which to live with for however many more years. The operation cost 12,000 dollars just for the surgeon.

I have thousands of dollars in unpaid medical bills due to contracting server onset H1N1 several years ago (the doctor said I was hours from death when I literally staggered into the ER) and a common infection form shaving. A ER visit lasting less than 15 minutes cost me over $900 just to tell me I needed antibiotics which I then had to purchase as well. Needless to say my credit is ruined because of these two ER visits.

When I was 16 or 17 (30 now) I tore some tissues in my rotator cuff group. Its not the normal rotator cuff injury. Ive had to learn to live with the pain everyday. For about 12 years it was excruciating. I wont be able to get it fixed until I finish my degree and save lots of money. My later teens all the way through to who knows when I have been physically limited and often in a great deal of pain.

You cant understand the gratitude with which I would accept your countries level of medical care.

man this is pretty shocking to hear. i cant believe how hard it is on you guys sometimes. New Zealand has a public health system but it works really quite well. we have private aswell which is subsidised so its cheaper.

maybe its just because we have a smaller population though. i mean there are delays with surgeries etc but nothing like 9 months, only our dentistry sucks. costs an arm and a leg (not to mention a tooth) to get a check up.

but having ACC is probably the best thing i think ive ever heard of for a health system. almost everything gets piled in there.

Hey Master Edchdie Braavo has a right to his opinion!!! How else would we all be here now and not training just a Giiiiii and thinking yanking and pulling will help us when we fight the ground and pound power wrestlers of today :cool:

On that note, I will say I wish we did have a better way of doing health care here-there needs to be something affordable for all the middle class, and while I won't say dump the complete low class out we can't just keep giving them free rides there needs to be some incentive/hand up to help them with making enough money to pay for the coverage (reminds me of college, the proverbial "not poor enough to get enough coverage,but not rich enough to pay completely through stress free").

I got a 600 dollar bill just for a doctor to say " hey it's not staff " no treatment at all, so i'm paying those mutha fuckers 5.00 a month until it's paid off and I could easily drop the 600 but it's about principle lol ha ha take that you greedy fucks.

The problem with America's healthcare system is the American Medical Association. It is a literal monopoly that was founded by the Rockefellers and is now maintained by the government. All doctors, medical schools, and hospitals must be filtered, trained, and supervised by this organization.

"Private" healthcare in America is a myth. It is all controlled. There is no competition because the AMA sets the standards and the government provides insurance. Nearly half of all health care costs are paid by the government in America. Know what this means? It means that the AMA and its affiliated companies can charge whatever they want without market pressure. It is a money pit, and the poor are the collateral damage.

A good example of how the system actually works can be seen when you take a look at medical procedures that are not covered by any type of insurance (and therefore competition is allowed to exist for them) like cosmetic surgery and laser eye surgery. The prices for these procedures are constantly falling while the prices for other types of surgery skyrocket year after year. In 2009, I personally had eye surgery done, and it cost me $900 per eye, practically nothing for the benefit received. I paid for it in cash. (This concept applies to pretty much everything with which the government is not involved. Just take a look at the constantly declining prices in the technology sector.) So yeah, a lot of people can't get proper medical treatment in America without going into debt, and it's a damn shame. However, people in countries with completely socialized healthcare are much worse off. I would rather be in debt than be dead.
