BJJ as self defense for women

After watching my 10,000th street fight video on World Star Hip Hop this morning, I had a realization. Women never get knocked out or even significantly hurt by the punches and kicks of another woman. Think about that. BJJ as self defense for women makes a lot of sense. Much more sense than it makes for a man. A woman can pursue pretty much any takedown on another woman with no fear of being knocked out. If anyone has seen a single street fight where a woman knocks out another from punches or kicks, please post the link. Like I said, I've never seen it happen. That also explains why female fights tend to be so long. They can't do any real damage to each other so the fights just drag on and on.

I know there are issues with BJJ when it comes to multiple attackers, but if you don't have to worry about being knocked out while you are in pursuit of a takedown, that makes BJJ training even more valuable in a street fight if you ask me.

And on another note, isn't it funny that virtually every female fight involves one girl controlling another by pulling her hair but you never see this addressed in any self defense for women instructional. No one offers any strategy for breaking that grip. No one offers strategies for using that grip on your hair to help you take down your opponent. Instead its multiple strategies for dealing with a 2 handed choke when your opponent has you up against a wall -something I've never seen happen in a female street fight video.

BJJ is the ultimate form of self defense for women imo, afa martial arts go.

I totally know what you mean. Ever single fight ends up with the one girl on top in mount and the other underneath. If only they had some technique they'd be alright. I did however see a girl hit a Janky-Ass Butterfly sweep once. It was a thing of beauty.

dude i've been talking about the same shit for a while. I don't think woman can be knocked out cold like dudes. out of all the chicks fights street & MMA i've seen. a girl has never been knocked out cold. even that video of a chick on a bus getting uppercutted by the dude bus driver and she didn't get knocked out either. there must be a mechanism in a womans chin that makes it impossible for them to get knocked out. " crazy "

Not at all. I see very few street fight videos of women "fighting" men. It's usually girl vs girl, and since the "attacking" girl isn't using those self defense scenario attacks that are taught in women's self defense seminars, you have to wonder how effective those seminars are for real life situations that a girl can find herself in.

I have to agree, being on bottom doesn't seem nearly as dangerous in female mma fights. It seems like it might just be the difference in explosiveness, women seem to need to throw in bunches to do damage, less of a one shot knock out risk if somebody gets caught.

It's obvious that females are not impervious to being knocked out. Any impact that can shake the brain is going to knock a human out. I think the OP is just saying that it seems it take a LOT more to knock out a woman than a man. Which may or may not be true.

I'm really happy this thread has been posted actually. For me, jiu-jitsu and a little judo are the best forms of self defense a woman can learn, especially attacking from guard.

I'm actually in the early stages of putting together a completely free jiu jitsu based self defense course for women focusing on situations where a woman would find themselves alone and need to fight back rather than run away. I was inspired by, I think the guys name is Arun, a guy on this forum from India who put a self defense course together after the rape incident in Delhi.

I've included things like basic collar chokes in the case of a guy wearing a leather jacket and basic sweeps from guard. Obviously the guard is a very important position for a female to be able to attack from. I have tried to stay away from joint and shoulder locks and mostly focus on sweeps and chokes, "there are no tough guys with chokes".

If anyone has any ideas for techniques I'd love to hear them. Thanks guys.

Actually, I'm not saying that. I'm saying a woman can't generate enough force to knock out another woman. That's a "game changer" for me if I'm teaching women how to fight woman. For a man the takedown phase of BJJ in a street fight is very dangerous. While my strategy would indeed be to go to the ground if I were fighting another man, I'm very aware that I could easily be knocked out in pursuit of the takedown. However, if I were teaching my daughter how to fight another girl, I wouldn't hesitate to tell her to go to the ground because she is in no danger of being knocked out by a punch or kick from another female. That was the realization I had that prompted me to write the post. It's something I have never seen pointed out anywhere. From what I've seen from watching dozens (hundreds?) of female street fight videos, its safe to say that any woman can survive multiple kicks and punches delivered by pretty much any other woman. That isn't the case when a guy is fighting another guy.

Why is women self defense instruction always about how to defend against a male? Why have I never seen instruction on how a female should fight another female? Every girl/girl fight involves hair pulling. Can anyone point out a single instructional for woman that teaches her how to deal with that? Nope. Instead its always how to deal with a two handed choke when the attacker has her against the wall... Something you never see in a You Tube fight video.

Most of the girls I know have never had a situation where they've felt physically threatened/intimidated by another girl, but have had multiple "uneasy" moments with men. You can use your own argument against itself and say that because girls are in no danger of being knocked out or critically injured by another female, there is no interest in same sex self-defense. Whereas defense against a male is something that they would value more because it's a legit fear they have to deal with and they would actually NEED the proper techniques to successfully defend against most males as opposed to being able to get by by "winging it" and going with whatever fighting instincts they have against other women.

Not to say that a girl with jiu-jitsu knowledge wouldn't be at a great advantage should she somehow end up in a same sex brawl, I just don't think the demand is there for the reasons I mentioned above.

Who said anything about two hands against a wall? that is the complete opposite of what I'm looking at doing. I want to do more real life situations. As for teaching girls how to defend themselves against women pulling there hair, I am putting together the course as an anti-rape self defence.

If you're so upset that there are no instructionals on how women should fight women, maybe do one yourself?

I am a girl and have some insight on girl fights. In terms of street fights, they are different from guy fights in that I don't want the fight to stop- I want to inflict as much pain and damage as possible. Nothing damages a woman like making her ugly- thus ripping out hair, face biting, scratching, etc.
We are more inclined to slap than punch- thus the lack of knock-outs. It is far more degrading to bitch slap someone as opposed to punching them, however, I assure you, I, and most of the women I know, could knock a bitch out easy with a well thrown elbow...maybe....
Thinking about it... I haven't ever been knocked out.... I was choked out once... but I wasn't fighting ;>
I personally prefer slaps on the ass in the kitchen... if he slapped me on the head, I may not be able to kick his ass right there, but I am quite likely to put ground up glass in his dinner or set his ass on fire next time he passes out drunk- that is how girls fight darling.
Yet I digress. My point I do have an excellent defense for hair pulling:
1: Grab the hand that is in my hair and push it into my skull.
2: Quickly drop low while pushing forward.
3: Charge her and slam the bitch into the nearest hard- preferably pointy- surface. This has never failed me.

I am practicing restraint in not retorting in a more public thread. I don't want to come in and be "that girl." You know- the hardened feminist that can't take a joke. To be fair- that's really not me anyway. I don't have an agenda and the round girls are hot and a freaking fantastic idea... that being said...
Take the word "women" in this thread and swap it out with any other minority group and the "men" that posted this would be out of the group. Fact.
Women are the minority in this organization. The overall tone is that we are encouraged to join, but once inside... is that the case or not? If it's going to be a He-Man girl hater's club, cool- but don't jerk us around, and don't tell little girls busting their ass every week that there is room here for them.
My final thought- I find it hilarious that these guys are talking about women's self-defense because these are the guys that we need to be watching out for. So chivalrous that they are so clearly concerned about our wellbeing.

Got knocked out by a 155lbs Kyokushin karate black belt, (girl), once.. decided I would bait her into throwing the roundhouse kick to the head she was so good at, by dropping my guard on that side.. Then I would sweep her as she kicked. That was the plan anyway, later I woke up. :)
I guess the girls on "ghetto fights" or whatever are A: Not too bright B: Have received no training in the arts of pugilism.

Its a missconception that girls dont punch. My girlfriend at the time(wifey now) punched the fuck out of this dude at the club while I was fighting with someone else. Any girl that will throw down with a guy cause he said some bullshit to her will protect there babies to the death. I pretty sure she can drop another girl. Maybe it helps she almost 5'9" and grew up on the southside of Chicago :) But as the other poster stated women would rather wait till you fall asleep and cut your dick off then throw it out a moving vehicle.
