Eddie's post-GSP/Diaz advice via Twitter/PLSU Snow Patrol!

After watching Diaz get nowhere on the ground against GSP I like Eddie's advice (via Twitter):

Vs a beast like GSP I would recommend to mix up 3 rubber guard strategies.

1. Crackhead control for 30 seconds to settle him down. Then double bag to invisible collar.settle him down for 20-30 seconds then double bag to Kung fu and attack with a Gogo.

2. Next time in guard, from butterfly guard, grab a deep overhook then right to flying Kung fu to an immediate Gogo attempt.

3. Next time in guard. Go right to meat hook and set up a triangle. If you can't set it up, flying chill dog on the opposite side to a Gogo attempt. Go back and forth thru those 3 strategies until a Gogo sticks. Also, u can always just throw elbows from mission control

In my opinion, i believe those 4 rubber guard strategies should be mastered by all Mma fighters.

I would love to see some more JiuJitsu going on in the big MMA matches, that's for sure. I'm getting really tired of seeing people unable to do much from their guard and just getting elbowed. We need a change!

Also - I looked up "flying kung fu" in MTS14 - sweet. That mysterious song that starts playing towards the end of the episode is 'Set the fire to the 3rd Bar' by Snow Patrol - love it.

I am NOT a Diaz fan, but when he use his legs as if he was going for a GOGO, I was actually rooting for him. He is so flexible and 10thplanetJJ would fit his game so perfectly. But that's over and done now, he's never getting a shot again at GSP.

The flying kung fu was there but he was setting it up just to push GSP off. I think he could have landed a gogo easy

From what i have seen it looks to me like gsp doesnt like to get hit, who does, but he has a tendancy to chill in guard after taking someone down who has tagged him standing, this happened with condit and diaz. So if someone could just get to mission control and be brutal with elbows it would make him press to advance position allowing the person on bottom space to work. Condit had some success doing just that with a high guard and just grabbing his foot so i would tend to think a polished rubberguard would at least take gsp out of his comfort zone.

Man at this point Rubber guard is really the only guard that can work against wrestlers that know Bjj or at least know how to defend against it. & Nick would have a sick rubber guard if he believed in it. As much as I hate to say it, the guard that made me fall in love with jiujitsu in the 90's in dead in todays MMA. But it's still amazing for regular people on the street just not for todays MMA.

Look guys.. as much as Nick believe that wrestlers is ruining MMA and he wants to change this and that. IF he wants to continue to fight (or guys like him) they have to get used to the idea that MMA will be loaded with wrestlers more than ever. Can you imagine how many wrestlers will be in MMA now that the Olympic has taken that away from them? These non-wrestler MMA better change with the times. And even at the lowest level, I know that to stand a chance with good kid wrestlers, I am preparing my daughter against them by having her polish up her rubber guard as we have seen how good it is against wrestlers. That is the only thing in my opinion that is keeping her in the game.

I don't think Nick is saying wrestlers are ruining MMA. His complaint is more with the ruleset catering to wrestlers. For example the elbows. Nicks argument is the elbows means the guy on top can fight from a much closer distance and stall out with little rabbit elbows (not doing much damage but creating enough 'action' to not get stood up). Whereas if you remove elbows, guys have got to punch which means create more distance, in turn there will be more scrambles etc making the fight more interesting. Also the first round should be 10 minutes.
I agree with both. I like elbows as it keeps the sport 'purer' however, they cut careers (and fights) short. I wouldn't be sad if they removed them tbh. 10 minute 1st round would definitely be better for the jiu jitsu guys. :-)

idk if there is ever a point in time where taking an elbow doesn't do much damage.

as for the sport, it will evolve. guys are going to get tired of being clinched from the top and are going to start clinching from the bottom. i mean just look at how much its already evolved. we were seeing guys just looking for wrist control from guard. now we are seeing more head control. overhooks and underhooks are being used more.

i truly do believe the rubber guard and the philosophies at play in it are the future for mma.

just my opinion though :)

I dont know why everyone seems to have GSP down as some kind of idiot. Just because there were fights where he chose not to pass guard does not mean he is ignorant of the more innovative techniques out there.

I wanted to see Diaz pull off some sweet jits as much as anyon but truth is GSP's jits was faultless. Never seen Diaz controlled like that, unable to move his hips, unable to initiate a scramble.

Lastly Georges use of Diaz' kimura and kneebar setup attempts against him were also brilliant, the leg riding in turtle is what we should all be talking about, rather than the nano second where Nicks shin was in front of his face..

If you look at how GSP isnt postured up and he leaves his hand on the mat, yes I think the gogo could land pretty easily with proper technique. I know it was a couple years ago, but Penn threw up a sloppy gogo attempt and almost got it. So im confident in that saying it would land easily and effectively.

GSP is an elite grappler. He's got grappling for MMA down to a fine art. Much like Marcelo and Rafa have grappling down for nogi.

Noticing a slight hole in their game from afar is one thing, and in theory anything is possible. But actually making the man tap, giving up his world title to a sub not only so difficult but one that his opponent is famous for landing in one of the greatest fights ever.

GSP had BIG replies for two of Diaz favourite setups; the kimura and kneebar, he stayed well clear of any armbar or triangle attempts and guillotines were addressed before they were ever a real threat.

He is bound to have covered gogos in training and no way was GSP falling into a half assed anything, let alone gogplata.

so you did watch the fight and see that GSP did not just elbow diaz, he was teeing off on him. Also, good advice throwing elbows from mission control but eddie forgot that nick doesnt believe in elbows, they're just a stalling strategy in his opinion.

Diaz seemed to be thinking about that Gogo several times. He was trying to get his feet in front of GSP's face without moving his hip away to create angle. This allowed GSP to easily avoid the Gogo and to initiate a guard pass. Diaz chose to then roll to the turtle, exposing himself to a position from which he was controlled and dominated over and over throughout the course of the fight.

Now, far be it from me to tell Diaz how to play the guard, but if you're gonna play against a guy who postures perfectly inside the guard and has excellent submission/sweep awareness, you better hip out on your Gogo attempt or just forget about it.

Obviously Im just being an armchair mma fighter but I think if there was anyone in the 170 weight class that had good rubber guard, GSP's ground and pound would be completely nullified and I believe he is submittable from it.

Have you guys seen the Gracie Breakdown on GSP's guard passing? He's just very, very good at it. He's also got Braulio Estima in his corner to train with. He seem to have Nick's ground game pretty much figured out... I would love to see what he'd do against rubber guard.

It would be very interesting to see how GSP fares on the ground with Maia, particularly from inside Maia's guard.

Its all fairly hypothetical seeing as that fight is a little way off, and even if it did happen GSP would likely control the distance keeping the fight stood up.

But providing he doesnt attempt to have a 25 min grappling match with him (which we all know he won't) I now see GSP being somewhat of an aggressor doing a similar job he did to Diaz. I doubt he will be so liberal, well he simply cannot afford to be against Maia, but I do see him at the very least surviving. Unless Maia gets his back of course, then he could be fucked.

Eddie really nailed it. If somebody would just come at him with elbows from the guard and attack the omoplata with a clench. A sick rubberguard would be best, but even a Sean William's or London type set-up would be interesting. Just make him be defending something.

What Diaz was doing was more of a butterfly recovery than a gogo attempt. A couple of people might just gogo themselves while he tries it.

My theory on how to beat GSP is to plan on working from your back for the first three rounds and make him pay for it. Like someone said, GSP hates getting hit. All pretty boys do. No offense you you handsome devils on here, but it's true. But I don't mean Thai style elbows. And I don't mean the downward elbows to the crown of the head either. I mean downward elbows to the face. Guys need to try to cut GSP. GSP doesn't like to be the only one bleeding. If someone would just slice his face up from guard for the first 3 rounds, GSP wouldn't want to go to the ground anymore. A striker could try to outstrike him. A grappler could try to take it back down.

And even with that strategy, GSP would figure out a way to win 3/5 times. He's just that good.

i think a few of the attmepts were gogos, i remember seeing a youtube video of one of the diaz brothers showing how to do a gogo and it looked similar to that. i think in the third or fourth round he definitly brought his foot around.

im not a pro with rolling into leg locks but it really did seem like nick didnt try much. this is the guy with apparently the best cardio in ufc and he didnt keep an amazingly high pace standing up and spent most of his time in turtle when on the ground. seemed weird to me. lik he wasnt feeling good or something.

i reckon if he had done a flying gogo with a double bagger he wouldve gotten gsp. atleast into a bad situation.

ah well gsp just shuts down anyones game. lets see what hendrick can do.

btw i agree with diaz about the rules suiting wrestlers a lot. if a guys got you in his guard that usually mean you are being controlled even if he is technically in the worse position. who did more damage while on the ground in the condit, hendriks fight? it was condit from his guard. i think thats what should have been counted, it says points are given for grappling, effective/significant strikes and octagon control. atleast in the condit, hendriks fight, both got big shots on each other, i would have said condit was getting the better of it near the end. and grappling, well if it was a bjj match condit would kill hendrik i think. and octagon control well, it was a pretty fluid fight but as much as hendriks was in the middle and condit on the outside, anytime hendriks got condit down, he jsut elbowed a few times and seemed to stand up almost any time he wanted to.

i think an update in the rules could be good for the ufc as a company and mma as a sport
