Is the 10th Planet being held back?

I was having a conversation today about traditional BJJ instructors and their reactions when you attempt 10th PlanetJJ techniques. I have observed that sometimes the 10th planet moves can be discouraged in favour of old school BJJ bread and butter techniques. I've heard that other folks have been told not to pursue the methods and should stick to a higher percentage (traditional) method instead.

Has anyone else encountered this kind of BJJ snobbery and if so do you think it had slowed down the ascention of the 10th Planet at all?

Yes we hear and see it alot. However it doesn't hold us back at all, others resistance only motives us.

What I am meaning is potential students dismissing some great techniques (or the entire system) out of the belief that their current coach is guiding them with their best interests at heart. If I never rolled with a proper 10th Planet grappler then I woud have slipped through the net too. Im wondering how many people out there have had similar experiences to mine and just reverted back to traditional BJJ?

I believe that if you are at a school that discourages "non traditional" BJJ techniques then you should try and find a new school. I am lucky in that my main school does not teach 10th Planet techniques, however, the instructor encourages us to try stuff. We have talked many times about 10th Planet techniques and his opinion is "if it works for you then by all means try it". When we roll he doesn't restrict techniques (other than the standard no kneebar/heel hools/leg locks at white belt level).

you have to train no-gi to be good in the gi. Bedsides for self defense who walks around with no shirt on?

That is awesome Marty. It's cool your coach is open minded like that. I'm concerned that a lot of coaches are worried of losing their students to a different system or possibly aren't familiar with the moves and are maybe scared their students question them about the techniques and they font know how to answer.

eventually the student will find like minded individuals. open techniques, no secrets. that's how a system progresses.

Haters gonna hate use it as motivation and prove your point in comp. it's threatening to work hard and long at a system that's becoming obsolete. The best fighters are the ones who evolve regardless of the style. Like minded souls will be drawn to the cause. Build it and they will come.

My argument is, these instructors believe there Jiu Jitsu is the end all be all system of Jiu Jitsu, while even the most traditional schools encourage students to supplement their training with Judo. I say if Judo is the Conservative approach to enhancing ones overall Brazilian Jiu Jitsu game than 10th Planet is the Liberal, new approach. Dynamic, innovative and very effective. If Judo is the right than 10th Planet can viewed as the left approach to overall enhancing a persons game. While I hate referring to it in a political fashion, my personal overall attitude is if you do all three and even further supplement your game with sambo, luta livre, catch wrestling, freestyle wrestling and what have you are just rounding out your grappling game. Some instructors just need to learn, Eddie Bravo isn't going anywhere. He is very successful, and dammit he should be! Because he took something that he saw had holes and made improvements. So what if he gave them names, it is a fact people retain knowledge quicker if something has a name to refer it by If this is your trade don't you want to have every tool possible? Traditional techniques are great, rubber guard is great. If you use the system at your school and they scold you, than make them understand that those technique enhance your game and to get rid of them on the simple (and bias) reason that it isn't the norm is absurd. They are telling you, make holes in your game so you adhere to tradition. Fuck that. Be you, and if your school can't be open minded enough about it, part ways as friends.

This is a great post! My main worry is that its novices that are being led away from the innovative methods and trust that their coaches are giving them the best advice. They may not realise that if they ignore their coach and delve deeper then they could become a far more effective grappler.

Being in Chicago,which is one of the closed minded markets in jiu jitsu, we see this everyday. Here is the way I see it. If you are about learning as much as possible in jiu jitsu or grappling then you will learn tech from all styles. 10p, judo, catch, bjj, jjj, freestyle,folkstyle, greco, whatever. That's the beauty of this art is you can throw in shit from everywhere. Guess what it all works, maybe not 100% but nothing works 100% of the time. Closed mindedness and ego are all road blocks to becom the bst grappler you can be. I have some guys that struggle to finish triangles because they are tiny, I have other dudes that struggle with Dela Riva due to body dynamics. Everyone find there strengths and weaknesses. People fear what the dont not know or understand. I was a gym that talk shit on rubberguard becuase they said it was only for stalling. I guess being able to punch. elbow or transition into subs without being hit is stalling. I left and dove deeper into the system and saw how wrong everyone was. My grappling has skyrocketed from that point. Find your own path!

I agree Josh! I'm so glad to have found some other 10th Planet grapplers to train under. Life is good!! :D

Thankfully I'm at a pro 10th Planet friendly gym now. I have trained in loads of gyms before, some open minded, some not. I think the best thing we can do is train hard and when ready start to compete representing the 10th Planet. Showing the effectiveness of the Art is a way of convincing people that it is a superior form of grappling. :D

That's horrible Johnnie, It should be up to the people to choose if they want to experiment with the 10th Planet or any other style for that matter. I can't stand politics in gyms!

What attracted me to 10P is the philosophy behind it. It's very much in the spirit of Bruce Lee. "take what works, reject what doesn't."

I've gone to a few other places that teach bjj and kickboxing and they're very much stuck in my-way-or-the-highway mode. Which is very frustrating for me. It's an attitude I hate. I [B]abhor[B].

When I studied Kenpo my instructor was really big on head kicks. At the same time, he didn't believe in having a ground game. I've been picked on and bullied all my life (which never really lasted long because I would fight back), so every time we did no-rules sparring, as soon as someone went to do a head kick, I'd take them down and introduce them to my game. Because of that, he changed his tune. He now has a black belt in jiu jitsu under Pedro Sauer.

I've dropped 10P into a couple of conversations with a few other guys who have shown interest in training with me, and they give me a really funny look. As of yet, they hem and haw about training.
