I have trained at a few gyms and never seen this, but maybe its just not something that happens everywhere, where is your gym?
yeah..just saying in general i see it as some dont want to get hurt, train hard, get beat or lose to a white belt!lol I was just wondering if it was at other gyms?
oh haha yeah, ive seen people who avoid certain people, I always find it funny
yeah...i only avoid people that are tring to go 120% and trying to win at all cost!!!
When I first started training 5 years ago it was because my buddy randomly told me about a free lesson with Pedro Sauer at Jeff Gordon's Self Defense Academy and so I went with him and one other guy, and for the first couple months we were pretty shy and thus tried to stick to rolling with only each other (when we could), and one of us would always get stuck with the random partner, but once we got comfortable with the sport and the rolling with random people thing, we started expanding, and finally ended up rejecting rolling with each other and trying to only roll with the other people in the class because we realized we could roll with each other any time. So yea, i think the "cliques" in the gym are just groups of friends who aren't truly comfortable with the sport yet.
Ive seen it for sure. Its only better when they say they are sitting out this one because they are tired when really its because they dont know you.
Or thier tired or not rolling today and then you look over and they are rolling...lol
i never got why people didnt roll with stragers.. i mean, sure, when you are new it makes sense, but i like rolling with someone i dont know, its always a question of what you might encounter, what they know, their defense, how they react to certain things
Really? Coach does a pretty good job of making sure we rotate. I've never noticed any cliques. I can perhaps understand a little guy avoiding a big guy or something but even then, most of the big guys have been around long enough to not be bastards about it and roll with smaller guys no prob.
Yeah thats why I said they'll roll with everyone.. but on busier nights if you pay enough attention to who's rotating where then you'll see it. When their are less people its impossible... Wasn't trying to imply that its a constant thing; Just that I've noticed what the op is referencing and its amusing.
you know how in the old kung fu movies people bust into other peoples gyms and challenge them, i wonder if there is jujitsu practitioners that do that.
I don't have a choice at my gym. My sifu won't let me roll with anyone my own weight at my gym. I'm always stuck with 170-205. I'm 149
I don't know what you guys are talking about I avoid people that are over my weight limit and over my spazz limit. Ill roll with most people that ask to roll but I don't try to roll with anyone thatll hurt me
it is thier ..ego,dont want to lose to lower belt,he goes to rough,i am tired and sitting this one out, getting some water, just a few..lol
Its not always their ego if someone is avoiding rolling with you, I suggest internalizing the issue. WHY do they avoid rolling with you? Most of the time it not because your awesome, if your thinking to yourself well its not because I'm a spaz, chances are....your the spaz.
I wouldn't think most people that really want to improve their game would care if they lose to a lower "rank".. everyone makes mistakes and their could also be a hole you need to fix etc.. I think it mostly has to do with the fact that people will generally want to roll with their friends or the whole spaz thing.
Or ill avoid people that smell. Or people that have long finger nails. Or people with a funky rash that's supposedly not ring worm.
Its never been about possibly losing to a lower rank cause that's what humbles you the most. I get tapped by a white belt, I know my technique is getting sloppy
I get tapped by white belts even when my technique is good. I don't care about "winning", and I never go 100% (it's usually between maybe 65 and 90). I'm just there to learn and improve and have a good time while getting a good workout, and consequently some white belts think they've really done something when they tap a blue belt, so they go really hard against me and I just kinda let 'em. I'm much more focused on improving my technique as opposed to ego-boosting. As a result of all that, I'm never avoided by anyone.
