Hey is a video of Cora rolling with her friend after class today. As you can see, those that give us your advice on how to improve her game, we have been listening and been drilling them. It was a really fun roll and especially for me to see that what we are telling her, she is using.

Here is the best advice I can give you, stop putting that song in videos.
Chris: I'm so sorry buddy. My 1 year old son LOVES that song. Everytime he hears it, he starts to dance. And with him dancing, he is happy and leave me alone. So I'm killing 2 bird with one stone per say...LOL Sometimes to keep him happy, I put that song on continuous play...and he will be doing the church bounce all day long...LOL
If y'all want her to get better, help him out. And all training partners her size. She needs a challenge. Iron sharpens iron and all that jazz. He was more like room temperature taffy.
And don't push on the mat to get posture in guard. Push on him.
Bobby: that is exactly my point. I am trying to help out all the boys her size. If I can help them get better, that will eventually help Cora. Right now, without teaching them techniques, what I'm doing is talking to their parents and try to rally the kids to go to competition more. I notice that when the boys have tournament coming up, they train harder. So if they go to tournament more often, then they train harder most of the time and thus they will get better. I know it works because Cora is the proof. I however, don't want to step on the coaches toe by teaching the boys what I teach Cora, you know what I mean? But when they spar with Cora after class, I do tell them what they are doing wrong and help them correct it. THis boy right here is a good sport, but he hardly ever come to class, maybe once or twice a week. He's been doing Jiu Jitsu for 5 years already. When Cora first started, he was one of the class bully that would order her around...:) He would love to partner up with her because he knows he can tap her. Needless to say he was one of the 1st name Cora scratched out off her hit list. But yeah I do understand where you are coming from. There's about 3-4 more Orange belts kids Cora's size, but they are in the same boat as this boy, just not improving that much at all. What's confuse me is that these boys have older brother that take Jiu Jitsu also. I would hint to their brothers to drill with them at home or teach them how to get out of things, but no results.
I completely understand not stepping on toes. My gym owner resents the shit out of me. He's not anti 10, but he's stuck in his outdated ways. He doesn't even roll and is holding the gyms progress back. I have to coach techs in secret when he's on his period. But yeah, his roof, his rules. Frustrating when I only want the best for everyone at the gym. Political pissing contests and power struggles suck.
This is a common problem and it sounds like you need to leave that gym immediately. You're only wasting your time there. Time that could be spent more efficiently at another more open minded gym. I could trade you horror stories but not on here.Quote:

I don't need to leave the gym. The only problem derives from me using and giving proper credit to 10p. We have completely different. Philosophies on how to train. Many come to me for advice so there in lies the problem. Gonna strive for coexistence because the polarities are what makes our gym special.

This is a touchy situation. I see this a lot though. Most kids don't take it serious enough to progress very quickly, but thre are a few in every class that do. The best case scenario would be if her instructor would start to recognize and put her with bigger/older people but that doesn't always happen. I have a couple kids in my school who only come to the adult classes for this reason. They pass up the other kids pretty quickly, then are held back because of training partners. I usually will let them know when it's time to bump up.Quote:

Sean: touchy situation?? LOL here's the latest update from this evening at the gym. We were told this evening by Cora's immidiate coach (blue belt) that the head coach doesn't like us recording any of the sparring at the gym. WE ARE SHOCKED!!!! to hear this because we been doing it for 2 years now ever since she started. He said that other parents are starting to do this as well and its not good. And continue to say that there are some parents that don't like their kids being recorded. But none of the parents for the past 2 years have any issues with us recording Cora sparring with their kids before. ANd the ones she spar with, their parents are our friends as we hang out and enjoy watching our kids spar. However, the head coach has not one time ever brought this to our attention. He is relaying messages through the blue belt coach only. Another thing is that the head coach is now my friend on FaceBook and can see all my activities in regards to 10thplanet as I have so many 10thplanet friends. ANd also he told me that with me posting all of Cora's tournament matches online is not good either. He said that all her opponent can see what she got and prepare for it. I told him it doesn't matter with us what they know. We are not about winning tournaments and medals, but only looking for the toughest fights so Cora can learn from them. I'm thinking he might be some what jealous of 10thplanet or something because we been doing the same thing since day 1. The only thing different is our involvement with 10thplanet and all the 10thplanet friends we have now. Also with Master Eddie helping Cora video get almost 40,000 hits maybe play a factor in that also as people thinking that Cora is a 10thplanet student. I don't know, he never said anything to us. He's never that much around to be honest. The other parents are starting to talk also. They ask me why are our kids, who are in the "black belt club", but they are being taught by a blue belt? I just reply "I don't know". I see other top level kids getting train by their black belt like the Mendes bros. I guess this is the main reason why I am here most of the time. You see, if our black belt isn't really doing much for Cora, for her to compete at high level, I have to search out for help from other black belt, and thankfully I have found Master Eddie and the 10thplanet family.

Yes, touchy because you trying to teach the other kids or influence them could be taken badly by the coach there. As far as the other stuff going on. Are you representing their school at the tournaments? If you aren't giving them any credit at all, that's probably why they are upset. Loyalty is big my friend. Representing 10p is beautiful, but not representing the school that is giving her a home to grow in the art isn't cool.Quote:

As far as the recordings go, a lot of places won't let you record. It's kind of weird that they would let it go and then try to stop it, but that could be because of other things going on.

Exactly. They don't want to resent it. But deep down, they do. The secret is to not be the squeaky wheel. Which is hard when you're wreckin comps and training. Lay low on fb and just hang out here while your at his gym. He deserves that respect.
When I see this behavior I don't try to place blame. I just vow to never be that way when I get my gym.
That is a very unpleasant situation I'm sure. Respect the rules your instructor has and rep your academy clearly. Keep the 10th Planet patches smaller than your current school's patches. We wil always be here for you but if you wanna keep going to that school you are gonna have to play by their rules. I hope they don't make you stop posting Cora's tournament videos on this forum, that would suck. Btw the video on this thread doesn't work anymore, I didn't get a chance to see :)
Sean: represent the team? I don't think you can find any other parents that represent her team more than us. I help rally other parents to take their kids to tournament. I always share story of how going to tournaments help improve Cora's game. When there is an in house seminar, I help rally the other kids to go, and we also go because we know that those in house seminars proceeds goes toward helping sponsor the team to go and fight. When there is a party, my wife would spend all day cooking something to share with the team. Her egg rolls and fries rice are killer. Since Cora compete more than most, Cora and I always go around and gather the kids to group up together and be a team, all of this is done even before any of their coaches ever show up. And when the coaches doesn't show up to the tournament, I help coach the kids who needed help and for that their parent are thankful. If you haven't notice also, Cora hasn't worn her 10thplanet rashguard lately because we want to show more "team spirit" and be an example to the new kids that are just now starting to compete. For two years, we always ask them if they have rash guard in kids size, but they never do. So we bought a 10thplanet rashguard from John Botello in Phenoix and Cora's been wearing that. And now guess what....they have kids rashguard. And right away we got one and Cora been wearing it. All of her Gi are decked out in team logos. Also not to mention at every tournament, my wife and I also wear the team t shirt. As many tournaments as Cora goes to and always get on the podium, I think everyone in Houston know who she representing. So representing the team?....yeah we got that...:)
You know Bruce, for a while I was posting on the grappling subforum over at Sherdog. I was on a crusade to convice them that 10P is the future and legit. I have since given up on that forum, because I came to the realization that it is full of close-minded assholes who hate for the sake of hating.
This was just a few months ago.
Anyways so while I was there I posted Cora's video, to showcase the effectiveness and simplicity of the 10P system. The haters hated and bashed and nothing good came out of it.
One comment that one guy made did stick with me though. He basically said that it was a shame that Master Eddie was getting all the credit for Cora's tourney wins, and there was no mention of (and no thanks to) her head coach, who assumedly taught her her entire JJ foundation.
But what can you do? Rubberguard works.
Master Eddie and bobby: respect...yes I do understand where both of you are coming from. And I don't want to be that squeaky wheel. We like it there, the atmosphere is great. I and other parents always have a blast watching our kids battle on the mat. We become friends, just this past weekend one of the boy had a bday party and invited all of the black belt club and we all were hanging out at this rock climbing place. So we are not just restricted to the BJJ. We are people and people make friends just like you and I. It just so happen that our kids love of JJ brings us all together. We consider ourselves team player and will always abide by the rules that are set up.
However, what i do online is different. I don't think any school can tell me that I can't post my daughter's tournament videos up online. That is probably my limit right there. Before I found 10thplanet, I was searching all over the internet for any footage of kids doing rubber guard and there were none to be found. I am sharing ALL of Cora's matches because maybe there are someone like me looking for help, looking for direction. ANd if I can help just one person out, then I did my job in sharing.
As far as the video of this thread, I took it off because I dont' want any other drama due to it. It was taken at the gym as I always have with the same boy as before. Just him and Cora rolling because he hasn't been to the gym in a while and needed some sparring time with Cora. Also I post it to show you what Cora and I been working on lately. But due to all this, I just decided to take all the video that are taken at the gym off our channel. Apologies...
Kurzy: thank you for sharing that brother. I'm new to editing videos as you can see and are very limited at what I can do. But if you pause the videos of her tournament at the end, I do give credit where credit is due everytime. Cora is a product of her blue belt coach (Cameron Graves) which I shared some of his tournaments on here, and ME by way of Master Eddie Bravo. Coach Cameron Graves and I have an understanding that he will teach her his BJJ stuff at the gym and I stay out of it. And at home, I will teach Cora 10thplanet JJ. With this combination, I can foresee that she will be doing great things by the end of this year. At times Cora already start to fight like Coach Cameron but with the added 10thplanet JJ. I can't help it if Cora go to move is the Rubber guard and that ALL the people associate Rubber guard with Master Eddie. Credit to Master Eddie for bringing out the Rubber guard the way he did and putting it on display for the world.
The politics of it all just make me sick. You see there is another little asian girl about 13 years old that goes to one of the other affiliate school of ours and her flexibility is off the chart. She is already good, but when I watched her fight, in my mind, I'm thinking I can turn this girl into a killer with what talent she has. Cora and I sit there and shout out quietly in our head "Rubber Guard". But due to me not wanting to step on anyone's toe, we just shut up and enjoy the fight. We want to share this thing so much. All her coaches see what Cora can do with the rubber guard, but never once they ever say anything to us. If I was a coach seeing a kid doing great things with a techniques, hey I'm not too proud to go and ask for some pointers. Well that's just me.
Hey Bruce, :) I have to say, tbh for a while now I have been thinking if I was a parent of one of the various boys at Cora's academy I too wouldn't be too happy with you often posting footage of Cora smoking dudes. It would probably be a little disruptive. Little boys have big ego's in general. So do some parents haha. Also there are many academies that do not allow recording during teaching.
Tournament videos shouldn't be an issue though IMO.
Speaking as somebody that reps both 10th planet and checkmat, there is a fine balance. I realise that not everybody will be as lucky as I am and have complete harmony there, but it is achievable. :)
Sam: yes i can understand where you are coming from with this. I'm not close minded and have since taken all footage taken at the gym off line. Its not my intention to belittle any boys. When I post a video online, especially taken at the gym, its for learning purposes. I'm a nobody in this field and thus needed yall educated eyes. I post them in hope that yall would watch it and give advice as to what Cora is doing right and wrong and how things can be improved. As you know, I don't just post vid of Cora's "smoking dudes", I do also post the ones she get smashed. There is no ego here for us, just the thirst to learn. Yes, finding balance is what we hope to achieve also, in JJ and in life.

They would never do that. As long as she learns the techs she is being taught in class time, as soon as rolling starts at the end of class she can play whatever style she wants. People don't generally want to see money walking out the door. How dumb would it be to throw someone out of an academy for playing too much De la Riva or whatever?Quote:

Seems like they have been pretty reasonable so far with letting Cora rep both team names etc. She needs those training partners there though to maximise her potential. Also you might not be so lucky at another academy. :)

Kurzy: its all in our philosophy brother. My friends been telling me that I was doing great putting all of Cora's winning online until I put some when she get choked out...LOL They ask why I do that? Why I post the vid of her losing? I told them its because I'm being real. Alot of other parents only post videos of their kids victory. But we all know that in JJ, that is not the reality. The reality is that in this sport you will win some and lose some. If a kid has never lost before as in many kids on my FB list, then I say those kids never tested themselves enough. A kid should not be undefeated if they set out to test themselves everytime. Also I had to remind my friends that Cora only get beat by older boys who happen to be some of the best in the country. There's not shame in that.
So yesterday at the gym, one of the blue belt coach pulled my wife over and speak to her about what's going on. He said that someone at the affiliate gym complain about us recording his kid. For the Kids Pan Am, we were invited to that gym so the kids can get some sparring time in. Well I wasn't the only one that was recording the sparring that day. After some digging, we found out that the guy that complain was the dad of the 13 yr old boy that competed and beat Cora in a couple of the latest tournament...LOL I guess he doesn't want his stuff to be out there...LOL Little does he realize that his stuff will always be out there if he continue to compete against Cora because win or lose, I will post all of her matches up.
fyi, when we used to live in vegas, my son trained at a traditional bjj school.
he also trained at 10thplanet when visiting his grandparents in california once a month and a week or two in the summer.
it wasnt a problem until he started using 10thplanet techniques and the other students didnt know what he was doing to them.
then the instructor said we can not train at both schools, i explained that there is no 10th planet in vegas and that he only trains there when visiting his grandparents and he said he would cancel his contract right now, i said do it then and we never looked back.
also the instructor told all the kids they can not train with my son even out of class or they would have to leave as well.
its sounds like it is beginning to become a problem for you, if you dont want something like what happen to my son to happen to cora, then follow all their rules and keep a low profile.
Ron: thanks brother....but how can we keep a low profile when cora is one of the top student? She uses both bjj and 10thplanetjj. Not to mention she is the only one competing every month and always bring to the gym her medals..:) well whatever happen its meant to be. But one thing for sure no man will tell me what I can or cannot train my daughter.

Yeah I hear what you are saying buddy. I hope it doesn't get that far. I really do like all the staff and the kids and parents that goes to that gym. I hope he can see over the political stuff also. But if not, so be it. I can always apply to be a ronin with Master Eddie...LOL My garage is almost transform into a dojo already. I can just use the MTS to train my daughter and once or twice a month we can go up to Sherman or Beaumont, TX to train. Also with her competing at least once a month, her technique will still be on point. Also I met many parents at the tournaments that I can ask to bring their kids over to train with Cora. So yeah we have a back up plan in case things go south. I always believe in "one door closes, another one open"...

The reason I ask is that you're talking about teaching your daughter things, which are different than the instruction she is receiving from ranked individuals. Now for all I know you've been rolling forever and just have no formal rank, or have never updated your profile, but you seem to question your coaches alot (keep in mind I think I've read 2 of your threads, so I'm no expert on you, to say the least), and they, whether they're teaching 10th planet techs or not, are legitimately qualified to be teaching.
That said, BJJ, imho, is a highly personal art. 10th planet is not for everyone. I use it, I like it, I'm excited to learn about it, but everyone has their own style. You may scream to yourself "Rubber guard!" but you don't know, that kid may have learned it, and just doesn't prefer it. There's no best move, there's no ultimate unblockables in Jiu Jitsu. You use what you like, what you're comfortable with, and what you find success with.
One last thing, this forum is not secret. It's public. Have you considered the possibility that one or more of your daughters coaches is aware of your posts here? Just a thought.
Anyway, awesome to see the kids get passionate about jits!
